Tori Amos – General Joy Lyrics 17 years ago
Basically it's saying that we can't always be happy & perfect with what you have, & that you have to make due. The line "and I know
you will always love Sorrow
is that why
you gave her dress
to Happiness?
\'cause it matches her eyes
when she cries"
is basically saying that he's (it's obviously talking in terms of a man wanting a woman) always going to want this image, and sometimes that image is unattainable to get. In turn, he manipulates things around him to get his wish. I think the entire piece talks about the restlessness and agressiveness of society, especially from a gender point of view.

The Weepies – Take It From Me Lyrics 17 years ago
I definitely agree with hab204, it reminds me very strongly of Shakespeare, only in more modern poetic terms. I LOVE THIS SONG! Every thing that she compares him to, "bright red boots, if they had wings", "a smile rising", etc. is so creative and beautiful, and very true when you're in love. It's so true, too, because things can be going so well that you're afraid they'll come crashing down. Enjoy the love while you can is basically what she's trying to say.

Tori Amos – Wednesday Lyrics 17 years ago
Tori is very complex and will stick in symbols that are super interpretable. It's hard sometimes to get everything she's trying to say, and I think this song is one of her most complex. The symbol of the "Eagle" represents America and American life, the "Thumbelina size 10" is probably referring to the range of the American people (size, mainly, but others too), and maybe the line "Persian we call Cajun on a Wednesday" refers to the American way of changing our thoughts & prejudices according to those around us.

The Shins – Those To Come Lyrics 17 years ago
Old life makes way for new life, and I think this song is about the ever-changing wheel that humankind can't stop. As far as responding to the "making tea in her underwear" comment, I think this is referring to the fact that we all do little things and while they may seem insignificant, it's the insignificant details that set us apart from the others in the human race. We're all individuals and although it may seem like all we do is be born, live, and die (and possibly be reborn, as the Shins suggest in this song), there is still beauty and it can still fill us no matter how long we live.

I love the usage of words. "A kiss on your molten eyes". It sends shivers up my spine every time I listen to it. I also love how they whistle in the end, almost ironic how light the music is compared to the subject it deals with. The line is simple and only variated a little bit throughout the song, which is like life, if you really think about it.

Vienna Teng – Anna Rose Lyrics 17 years ago
A beautiful lullaby... very well crafted, I love how the instrumentals sound like a dream, you can almost hear her stirring. I have a younger sister named Anna Rose and it sort of became her theme song after she heard it.

Vienna Teng – Daughter Lyrics 17 years ago
It's beautiful when the music sounds like the idea portrayed in the lyrics.
Scene: A mother and a daugher are sitting across a table from each other, probably early summer, and there's an issue like "the elephant in the middle of the room". It can't be ignored. However, the mother doesn't feel like she can confront her daughter about her problems, which sound like self-image problems because the mother comes on to say something about how her daughter is as beautiful as summer. She's saying to her daughter how they'll look back on their hardships and cry but also love because it brought them closer together, and it won't change their love it'll only bring them stronger.

The second verse goes on probably five or ten years down the road, and she's talking about her love life problems with her mother and comparing them to her own, and they're seeing similarities in themselves more than they thought they had.

Iron & Wine – Such Great Heights (Postal Service cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
I LOVE the Iron & Wine version. The slowness of the tempo and the haziness of the vocals & guitar further the poignancy and meaning of the lyrics.

To me, this song is about finding someone who you connect with mind, body, and soul. When you both are past the worries and fears and where it feels as though all of the stumbles and faults in your life have led you to this beautiful feeling--as though everything that occurred or didn't occur was just to lead you to this euphoric state. The connection, so deep and pure, seems almost too good to be true (And I have to speculate
That God Himself did make
Us into corresponding shapes
Like puzzle pieces from the clay)

I love how the emotions of love and connected-ness are portrayed with a song on the radio--a familiar and endearing metaphor that conveys the comfort of someone loved absolutely.

The chorus seems is portaying the feeling of being in a more beautiful world. People and the society around you don't realize the deepness of the relationship or the love and connections that you have, and tell you to wise up or "come down", but you don't care because you're in a higher place.

The second verse seems to be about having this connection and still living in the society where deep love is more rare, and trying to cope with the fact that not everyone understands. For instance, trying to leave the song on the machine hinders the feelings and makes them harder to understand, as though the world around you hasn't caught up with your feelings yet. "It sounded thin upon listening...shrillest highs and lowest lows"...the love cannot be summarized by these, because all of the in-between time makes love much more realistic, and this love is the most real of all.

Carbon Leaf – Love Loss Hope Repeat Lyrics 17 years ago
I see it as a boy is in love with a girl, but he's a little shy and he's trying to get over his introverted nature. He's in a reverie about the things they would to together if only he could get over the initial "leap of faith" in confessing his feelings. The line "silhouetted and ready to bloom" is a metaphor for his feelings--he wants to flower and grow, but he keeps holding back.

Sufjan Stevens – Wolverine Lyrics 17 years ago
(Personally, I don't see any X-MEN references in here but I'm not an expert.) In Michigan, the wolverine is a prominent figure and it is also an animal of power. Wolverines can be hostile, and in this song, it seems like Sufjan is comparing a "popular girl" to a wolverine. She's got this power over others that beauty bestowed upon her, and she didn't really choose to be beautiful. The lines saying "take it in stride" are referring to her usage of the power, subconcious and obvious, that she has over people. The "it's not your fault" could be referring to people's initial judgmental reactions upon seeing the "popular girl".

Sufjan Stevens – John Wayne Gacy, Jr. Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is hauntingly beautiful--I love the way Sufjan takes emotions that are quelled within us and lays them out on the table. Sympathizing with a murderer is something that I think many of us do subconciously, only Sufjan is brave enough to take these feelings and make them into a gorgeous and poignant song.

Has anyone had the thought that the line "look beneath the floorboards for the secrets I have hid" is a reference to Edgar Allan Poe's "Telltale Heart"? He hides the man he murdered underneath the floorboards, but his guilt eventually makes him irrational and crazy.
