Mumford & Sons – Little Lion Man Lyrics 12 years ago
I like all of the views in here!

I think the song is about a man who always made excuses for all of his actions and inaction. Rate yourself and rape yourself, could mean that he always thinks too much about everything and feels that he is not good enough, which in turn feels like rape, degrading himself with a rating is like rape... He needed to think "I can do it". And all the courage he has is wasted on fixing those problems, a wasted venture. He's not as brave as he once was, before he did this to himself... He made himself feel useless and incapable. He's never be the man in his heart because he cannot let go of these issues and work on what really matters in his life... Forget what's in his head.

Weep for yourself, because you created who you are, and continue to do so. Further and further into despair.

When it finally hits him, that he brought this all on himself, he crys out to her and admits what he's done. Knowing full well that it's over.

Mumford & Sons – Sigh No More Lyrics 12 years ago
I think that TheHeartThatSkipsABeat has a good grasp on this song.

I always thought it was about him loving someone who cannot seem to love him at the same depth. And he tries to reassure the other person that he is not perfect and has tended to keep one foot on solid ground because it is stable (being uncommitted) and the other foot was kept in the instability of the ocean, where it feels unnatural, because he loves her. He tries to explain both to himself and to her that love cannot steer you wrong. He wants to have both feet in the ocean.

I can also see this being about a man and god. Where he explains that god knew he wasn't perfect, yet he loved this man regardless. And he comes to realize that, feels secure and safe in that love, and then steps with both feet into the ocean, fully committed to gods love. ***I am no longer a religious person, but having had that past, I can see in this way.

Billy Joel – Vienna Lyrics 16 years ago
Yep, in due time what is needed will come to you.

Don't seek it because it is a pointless search... Enjoy the time at hand because when you wise up and become an adult, you will wish you could have your youth back and do it over again. If you are in a hurry to grow up, you will find yourself having a hard time enjoying life, in the moment, and will see it as a pointless endeavor. (And oh, how wrong you would be!)

Enjoy the time you have, play with your youth. There is a limited number of years to be young and happy without hassle (0-26 years) and a lifetime to wise up. (~50+)

Do you really want to blow the only time you have to be young and free, on trying to be an adult? In time, you will become an adult whether you like it or not... Depending on your parents, how they raised you (respect & maturity - ie wisdom), you can still be a living in the moment happy youth, and when you grow older a free/youthful adult. But some people have trouble being both, or even just an adult, if they were never young to begin with... You gotta be something in order to become something else, and letting lose will greatly help you in adulthood. Take chances in life.

I speak from experience when I say these things.

About working to live and not living for yourself.
Basically, not earning enough money in their jobs, having to get a second job (LEO/Barkeep), and still barely getting by.

If that's moving up, I'm moving out... Gonna find a better job, or at the very least, one I enjoy.

Nobody's slave... Working for someone else, not for yourself. All you do and it only helps your employer to move up - You stay put 'cause they need you there.

Yep, he keeps thinking about what/how to say something, to try and not necessarily impress her, but not make himself look like a dork.

If you want to learn how to swim, you gotta jump in the water... You can think about it all you want, but you're still going to miss something, and you'll have to learn to deal with it in the water.

Take a chance.

Billy Joel – And So It Goes Lyrics 16 years ago
It's about having loved someone in the past and getting hurt when they leave you... And then having trouble with letting your heart be free again.

He realizes that being withdrawn is only going to keep him from feeling love again... So he lets go of his heart and lets her in.

At Vance – Logical Song Lyrics 16 years ago
It's a song about Unequivocal Liberty.

Rather than being free to be ones own self, society feels the need to mold you into what is acceptable, presentable, etc. just as the song says.

If you go outside their boundaries, you are labeled as something undesirable, deranged, criminal.

The song then transpires that he was once free and happy, but when they sent him away to make him "normal," so that he would be presentable to society, to brainwash the same as if it were a cult, he forgot who he was, and how to get there again.

That's where the last line comes in, asking for someone to tell him who he is, as that's what so many years of his life were based on, being told who/what/why and not finding his own way... He wants to be human again.

Kenny Rogers – Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) Lyrics 16 years ago
"by residentgiant: Existential angst"

Bingo.

The reason it began, was because of a night of drinking and when he woke up the sun was shining down on him... In a still buzzed/drunken state of mind, he began thinking about his existence. (ie Humanity)

"I woke up this mornin' with the sundown shinin' in
I found my mind in a brown paper bag within"

He then proceeded to think deeply for some part of his journey. Soon enough, he'll move on with his life - And exist. :)

Kenny Rogers – Coward of the County Lyrics 16 years ago
It's about a boy who never knew when to stand up for himself, and when he saw his father for the last time, in prison, his last words of advice being that his son avoid the temptation to fight for your pride around every corner of life... That it takes a strong person to turn the other cheek and not only take the pain, but also to avoid the assumed "shame."

After living for so many years by his fathers last words, one day he found out when to fight... The only way he would ever know when the right time is, is after he resists the wrong ones.

He was never weak, physically nor mentally, and the day someone (Gatlin boys) crossed 'that line' was the day they realized that. Whether he would have won or lost that fight, the county would never see him as a coward again.

Basically, the song is about being a real man... One who has respect, stands up for the truth and what he loves, and to know that he doesn't have to go through life puffing up his chest - Because when the time comes, you'll do just fine.

(FWIW, I never had a father and in my younger years this song really helped me through it all... And still does.)

Whoa... I could have sworn there were already replies here.

Anyway, the song is about Narcissus...

The second and third line in the first verse: He says hello to the man because he's intrigued (thinks he's beautiful) and doesn't know his name, because he is himself! Like looking in a mirror for the first time...

Knowing that, the rest of the song should be understood quite easily.

Everclear – Father Of Mine Lyrics 17 years ago
The song is self explanatory... Especially considering his past.

My parents separated when I was too young to have anything more than scattered memories, but as young as I was, I knew enough to love my parents - Especially my hero, my Father.

I have fond memories of him doing things with me as a toddler, pushing me around the house on my plastic trike, carrying me when I couldn't walk, and teaching me what I needed to know. Then just as my memories were able to hold on, he started to drift away... I didn't understand why things happened like this.

Around this time he began working with the USDA, as an Emergency FireFighter, He would be gone for weeks, sometimes months, and then come home for a couple days but I would only see him for an hour or so during this time. I would come to find out why a few years later.

When I was about five years old he took me out to the county fair, I was scared shitless in the monkey cages. That's the only memory I have of that day.

Other times he would take me to visit his friends, only to tell me to stay in the van, "I'll only be a few minutes..."
I waited for hours before I would see him again, the whole time trying to hold my bladder... He told me to stay, and I was raised to obey.
When he returned he had an unusual smell about him that I remember to this day, and now I am quite familiar with it. He had forgotten I was with him this time, and there were to be others... Sometimes he knew and just didn't care, even when I called out to him.

I've come to learn that he has always been self important. Narcissus had the same problem, he failed to realize...
The most important thing in his life was supposed to be me. I was to become a man someday, one who might come to free this world, one who might enslave it. His time was done and mine to begin.

I never asked for much... All I wanted was my Father. Help me to learn, teach me what you know, discipline me, it'll help me grow into a good man. (My eyes are tearing up as I write this.)

Around ten years old, I would stay over at his house on the weekends and all he ever did was sleep in that room with the windows covered dark. So many times I injured myself due to his lack of supervision, and had only myself to help me back on my feet.

Back in '96 he had a revelation... But not the one I'd been hoping for.

Now he believed he was jesus, and god was going to end this world... Just what I needed to distance him further away from me. The only time I had a chance to be around him was when he preached, and never did I have the chance to speak myself, he had so much to say.

After some years of hearing what he had to say, I had become a believer. But as time drew on, people would say he was crazy... I never believed that, because I know my Father and he's just narcissistic. His life has to have meaning, and if it's not brought before him, he'll just have to make pretend. He still doesn't know why his life has meaning... The truth is right before his eyes - Always has been.

With him, I came to know what I never want to be, and without him I came to be who I am. I'm not perfect, and feel as though I never will be, but I will always strive for myself so that when I have children of my own, I can do what is needed for them, even if that means leaving them behind.

Sometimes I wish I had never known him at all. Maybe I would have been better off, maybe not. I know I am alright now, for the most part.

I question myself if I should tell him what his life has been like from my perspective. Would it be right? Is it for the best if I just let it go? I feel something inside me but I'm still unsure what it is.

There's no need for him to say anything now... The wounds have scarred over, I am a man now.

As of Sept. 29, 2006, I no longer believe in god. He has never helped me, I've always been alone in my troubles and I rose above.

Today my father is still the same, speaking of the end of the world as if it is coming tomorrow. All I do is stare in his eyes and wonder where my Father has gone.

All I've learned has been through my own hardships, my own failings, my own accomplishments, and by accident. Not mine.

Today, I question authority, I speak my mind, I do as I please with respect to others who give me the same, I have no fears, I have too much hope, too little faith, too much time, not enough time, friends I never see, a mother unsure of my future, too much like my father, not enough of the others (thank god, err...), more than enough love, just enough hate, too many tears, understanding, more than enough loss, not enough time to gain, too little experience, too much experience, one true friend (myself), and through it all I know that I wouldn't have it any other way.

I am who I am because of my past. I do what I do for the future, of my children and the rest of the life on this rock. What I've done now was for me and you.

Nine Inch Nails – We're in This Together Lyrics 17 years ago
It's about yourself and being happy with who you are. In the end, all you have, is you. No one can change you, or decide your fate without your letting them. Your entire life is based on you! All the way up until the moment you die, your life is yours to do as you wish with... No one can take your freedom unless you let them.

The song is ultimately about personal freedom, and standing up for what you believe in. There will always be someone who seeks to become a tyrant, and you will always be fighting to keep them at bay.

In the song he uses a relationship (I think) to get his point across. Kind of like a Romeo and Juliet story, but he leaves the end up to us.

Mason Jennings – Adrian Lyrics 17 years ago
Rager,
I agree that it is a very sad song... But at the same time, it is "empowering." It lifts me up and helps me to remember.

If he is being hanged by a mob, why is he up in the tree? It seems to me that he is sitting on a branch ready to hang himself.. But if that's the case, why are his hands tied?

Maybe these things are just symbols for something else... His looking down is that it is by his own choice to end his life, but with his hands being "tied" it is as a result of something else that brought him to this point.

What does the line mean about being on the bottom and the boat?

I think there is a bit more to this song than we are seeing.

There is a whole lot of information in those lyrics that should be included in our opinion.

FYI, I don't think it's a black man being hanged. That's a bit fast to jump to that conclusion, now isn't it.

Yeah I'm going to say sleep, as in dormant or not yet conceived. Of course they're not babies until male/female get together, but that's beside the point...

... He's singing about his future with his one true love. He hasn't found her yet, but he dreams of the day when he does and what his life will be like... Their children, and their life together, their future, their grandchildren and all other things they will create all as a result of his finding his one true love.

That's my opinion anyway. :)

Five for Fighting – Superman (It's Not Easy) Lyrics 17 years ago
Men were not meant to be a superhero...

He is who everyone looks up to... A rock, one who takes everything in stride.

But, he's only human. He hurts too, yet he can't let it show because of who he is supposed to be.

He wishes he could just be like everyone else... Simple. No super human strengths/powers.

He's more than just a rock. He is human.

It's a view that superman (or any other superhero) has. We all wish we could be like him/them, and at the same time, he would be willing to trade with us. Just because you are something special, doesn't mean you are impervious and all of a sudden your life is grand.

No matter who you are, hurt gets to us all.

"There's only one girl in the world for me" means that there is only one, and all the ones that don't work out, don't matter. There's plenty of fish in the sea and one of them is bound to be his.

Why settle for what's around him (in his town/etc.), when he could scour the whole earth in search of the woman he loves.

Don't settle. Choose wisely. Enjoy your time in search, and when found, enjoy your time together, because you found her. Don't let go. You'll know.

Mason Jennings – East of Eden Lyrics 17 years ago
He is still living and learning.
He knows not wholly what he loves and feels, just as his mother doesn't know him anymore.

He tells his brother that he's felling down and regrets his past actions.
But that he is still learning and hopes to figure things out and be able to then forgive them.

Sometimes his heart is easily broken. (It's fragile)
He often finds himself buried in the past. (Memories)
Thinking about himself, without realizing others have been hurt too. (He's not alone)
His brother told him that time can heal all wounds.
And that he is still alive (hasn't committed suicide yet), that he must yet truly love his brother. (Why would he still be here if he didn't?)

All of his hopes and dreams he once had, are now returning (Now that he has come through it (depression)
The things that brought him down are now turning around and are lifting him up.

He comes to the realization that his brother was hurt through it all, as well as himself, and that no one in this world feels no pain. (We all hurt sometimes, we are all human, and we all have emotions.)
He says he's sorry and that there's still a rough road ahead, but he is learning as he goes.
That he will learn to accept the things he cannot change. (That's life)

Now wherever he looks, he only sees the way out of his depression, and his "song" is no longer in the blues.
And although he hasn't figured anything out, it looks as though him and his brother have made it though it all.
He asks his brother where he's been (in his heart and mind), because he still wonders how badly he was hurt, when the whole thing came crashing down.

:)

It basically means "Relax."

He speaks of confusion in life and of natural "disasters" that we seek to remedy, and we end of cornered in confusion with nowhere to go. If only we would relax and not worry about nature, just accept that some things must be, no matter how "horrible" we feel they are (mass death), they are part of nature keeping things in check.

... If we mess with it, we may live longer and have a higher population. But have you not heard that we "can't save them all." We need to accept that we are nothing more than any other animal and our time of extinction will come... Just relax and enjoy the ride, cause if you're not enjoying it, what the hell are you going through all this BS for?

Relax.

It's really about people who enjoy their lives as they are, making the most of their time by enjoying what they have. They live a life of fair leasure and although they may not live long, they will live enough. They are content with "living and dying in three quarters time" (of the human lifespan), because of how much they enjoy their lives, and how much they're done and seen.
