Tori Amos – Northern Lad Lyrics 14 years ago
I think of "slow like molasses"...to me, it sounds like she's deliberately going slow, perhaps too slow, and she thought that it would be okay. But, as it turns out, it wasn't okay, and now he's gone. Really heartbreaking song.

Tori Amos – Fast Horse Lyrics 14 years ago
For some reason, the first line makes me think that the guy said "You love me? What are you, drunk?" right before. And then the song begins.

Massive Attack – Teardrop Lyrics 14 years ago
I always felt that "love is a verb, love is a doing word" comes from a person that doesn't believe in love. For them, love isn't this great thing. Love is a chemical reaction, an action. Because of this, they have become "fearless" of love. It means nothing. But the rest of the song says otherwise...as a result, they are "stumbling", unsure of their belief. You cannot put out a fire with a teardrop, just as you cannot deny love.

Tori Amos – Zero Point Lyrics 16 years ago
"Zero point, your time is coming." I remember that line in the Venus booklet.

Other than the fact that she releases some b-sides much later than usual, "we are now entering the photon band" and the part about the Maya are more appropriate now than it was when Venus was released. We're close to 2012, the end of the Mayan calendar and the supposed shift in consciousness.

Tori Amos – Upside Down Lyrics 16 years ago
It sounds to me like a woman that goes against the norm and the standard view of how a woman should act. And of course, people talk about it: "Chatter, chatter".

She does have doubts about it: "You see, I'm afraid I'll always be still coming out of my mother upside down".

Tori Amos – Dragon Lyrics 16 years ago
I see this as a woman who loves a man, but he's too hurt by a past relationship to even notice her. She gives him the cold, harsh truth in the first lines...

"Don't tell me a *woman* did this to you."

How true, Tori.

Tori Amos – Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas Lyrics 16 years ago
Whenever I hear her version of this song, it brings tears to my eyes. Not only is it beautiful, but she brings a certain sadness into it that no other version has.

From a Spanish poem that's just as beautiful...this song is one of my favorites from her.

Tori Amos – Baker Baker Lyrics 17 years ago
I love the beginning of the version that is on A Piano. It adds an extra bit of sorrow and emotion to an already gorgeous song.

Though everyone's pretty much covered what this song is about, I can really hear a version that switches roles in the song, one that I relate to more...

"I said that behind his eyes he's hiding
And I told him he pushed me away
That his heart is hard to find

Here, there must be something here..."

Tori Amos – Hey Jupiter (The Dakota version) Lyrics 17 years ago
I feel like this is part two of Hey Jupiter in the sense that she's found another after the mess with the man in the original version. But he's just another man, and feels she can't give her heart to him, even though he's given her everything. She knows where everything is in her life, except for the one she loves...this man isn't the one she wants, therefore "he isn't you".

Tori Amos – Precious Things Lyrics 17 years ago
I would have to say the live version on To Venus and Back is my favorite. The power and emotion of this song definitely comes through when she plays live. To me, it's definitely about school, not fitting in with the crowd, being used and such. And Tori even goes to say "let it bleed, girls, just bleed"...everyone who's ever been that girl in school should just let it all go and forget the past.

Tori Amos – Tear In Your Hand Lyrics 17 years ago
"Maybe I ain't used to maybes." I love that line. He probably told her "maybe someday it can happen, maybe someday it will work out, but not now", and the line seems like the answer. It goes into how painful it is to even touch him, then she realizes that "maybe it's time to wave goodbye".

Tori Amos – Hey Jupiter Lyrics 17 years ago
"And I thought I wouldn't have to be with you, a magazine."

That line gets me every time.

It's as though she thought he would prefer a real woman, flawed and human, rather than a touched-up, fake, photoshopped perfect girl that you find on the covers of magazines...but that was not the case.

Mono – Life In Mono Lyrics 17 years ago
Whenever I hear this song, I can imagine a relationship between two people of different ages. "Ingenue" is the very young girl, the song being in the point of view of the much older partner.

Tori Amos – Bachelorette Lyrics 17 years ago
Whenever I hear this song, I think of a woman whose friends are all married and living happily, yet she is the only bachelorette out of them. And while it makes her sad sometimes, she remembers good things about being a single woman, and remembers that her turn will come someday.

Coldplay – Spies Lyrics 17 years ago
I feel this song is referencing 1984. The fear of being watched, that the spies will come to get you in the night, they will certainly find you. The "spies in the water" might just be saying that the spies are everywhere you go, even in water.
