fun. – We Are Young Lyrics 12 years ago
To me it seems like that whole section is still him trying to get his story straight, i.e. making up excuses for coming over to talk to this person and/or being alone instead of with whoever he came with.

Excuse 1: "My friends are in the bathroom getting high."
Excuse 2: "Oh, my lover's over there waiting, yeah "sunglasses" beside her just stole my spot; I told her I came to ask you about a scar (Which was a lie because I already know where it came from)"

The popular interpretation seems to be that "sunglasses" is asking about a scar on his lover, but that doesn't actually make sense, as the lover clearly isn't the person being spoken to.

This song clearly positive about the idea of youth, but I don't really understand why people think it's a "youth anthem".

The chorus begins "Tonight, we are young." The implication of the word "tonight" is that, either literally (age-wise) or figuratively (baggage-wise) that is not normally the case.

Now, given that this song was written by an actual person who would have actually been approaching 30 years old after an actual night of drunken carousing, I would be inclined to guess that he was mainly feeling nostalgic about someone from his past who he perceives would have always had his back had one of life's complications not come between them.

But that's just my opinion.

Cryptic lyrics? No. The first line sums up the intent of the song.

"I want to tear a big hole in what is to be,
To end all this infatuation with unity,"

At the core this is still obviously a song about being betrayed by someone close to you, and having the strength to not let it get you down.

The repeated phrase "I see you lying" (note that next to me isn't always repeated) is a cool double entendre. He finally sees through the blinding lights of his idealism and sees the lying.

People who think it has something to do with Gerard/Mikey/patient merging with a bright light should be music video directors, not lyrics interpreters ;P

Actually, I just noticed a neat bit of imagery here if you interpret the song as I have above.

"Can you see
My eyes are shining bright
Cause I'm out here
On the other side
Of a jet black hotel mirror
And I'm so weak"

Again, he's blinded by love or in denial here, his eyes are shining bright from the light reflected in them. But only because he's on the other side of this jet black hotel mirror. The other side being not in the room, unable to see what's happening in there, (if you're following me, you know she's cheating.) The 'jet black hotel mirror' can be both literal and symbolic, since you find grungy black mirrors in cheap, poorly maintained rooms, and it could also relate to how cheap he feels he's been sold out, as well as adding to the light/dark contrast they have going in this song.

Hmmm, well xizziex seems to have the closest ideas to how I had been interpreting the song.

Here's how I had interpreted it:
The song seems to have two parts, divided by "These bright lights have always blinded me," which forms a bit of an anticlimax. That suggests to me that those lines are central to the theme of the song.

Opening:
He has realized the other person is not as involved in this relationship.

"So many bright lights they cast a shadow" brings in the idea that love can obscure the truth.

"But can I speak?"
He feels he needs to justify the effort he's put into this unbalanced relationship, or 'demanding love' that he's been so afraid of losing (presumably because life is tough, and he's admitting he's weak)

Going into the chorus you see signs of strength, then the next verse goes back into the weakness and emotion again.

So, at "These bright lights have always blinded me" strength has won the battle, he realizes that the situation was never all that good to begin with, that the bright lights, his love, hope and optimism ALWAYS blinded him.

Which leads quite logically into the next theme:
"I see you lying next to me
With words I thought I'd never speak"

This realization has come to him in the middle of the night, and it is keeping him awake (still next to her).

"With words I thought I'd never speak"
He wants it to end it NOW.

"Awake and unafraid"
Which is his current state.

"Asleep or dead"
Added for emphasis that he never thought this would happen.

Quite simple really...
