Yes the person in the song (we can safely assume Lou writes from personal experiene) is going to the corner of Lexington and 125th to score heroin. You can get the subway up there (4,5,6 I believe) which is part of its appeal as a drug dealing area. It's uptown (as the 2nd verse points out) in Harlem hence the African-American men questioning why a white man would be so far uptown and obviously not a resident. Eventually "the man" (i.e. the dealer) shows and he shoots up at which point in spite of his woman yelling at him he doesn't care. At least until he comes down again. |

Yep fantastic song. When you here the live versions (1969 or Quine) you really get an appreciation of how much it means to the guys to have Moe (Moe has an e in Maureen Tucker's case) sing these songs. They always seem to have a lot of fun with it.
In addition to this and After Hours Moe of course also sings in The Murder Mystery. |

There is a fantastic live version of this song (it skips the second verse) where you feel the energy of the song. Just great lines - the opening verse for me always set the mood. Taking a walk to Union Square and then you never know what you'll find there. Lou writes from personal experience of the lower Manhattan drug scene. |

Since that followed him introducing Doug Yule as "my brother Doug on bass" you can assume Lou was in a sarcastic mood (in a fun happy sense) that night. Much like him describing "I'm Waiting For The Man" as a song about love between a man and a subway.

I love this song mainly for the great music that goes with it, that heavy clangy guitar sound. If I had to go out on a limb I'd say it's about a guy who finally sees that a relationship is over. The "How does it feel to be loved?" part is a great balance between bitterness in meaning but sung in an upbeat way. But given some of the other lyrics I think you form your own opinion... |

Yeah and a decent crack at the lyrics which are hard to make out. Lou was probably making it up as he went along and wouldn't know what he was singing if he heard it today. A great song almost rockabilly and Lou is clearly having a great time playing some classic rock guitar in this and Its Just Too Much. Fantastic album as well. |

The song is about After Hours bars of which there are plenty in New York City. It's about the other world that exists there where you don't have to face the reality of what's outside so long as you keep the door closed (in realty and metaphorically). It's not about any particular romance or whatever it's just about the kind of people who hang around bars at 3-4 am when everyone decent is asleep. Everyone looks good in the dark. For a good perspective on this song listen to the Maxs Kansas City album where Reed sings it, especially the final verse. If you want to view it in a wider context its about anyone who doesn't want to race the reality of something (in Reed's case the band was breaking up when Maxs was recorded) and hides away from it. |
