I think that this song is about the general American population and focuses on (at least) two particular events. Also note these aren't particularly my views and I'm not supporting/rejecting any political views in here I'm speaking as objectively as possible.: 1) The controversy on whether or not Obama was really born in America 2) How quick people are to complain on various issues, but how seldom they will take a stand and work to stand up for what they believe in. I'm not sure what to make of the first verse so I'm going to skip that... The second verse I believe is a direct reference to Obama "He may not be born of this land, but he was born of this world" says how even if he wasn't born in the USA he is still a human and that's all that really matters. the USA is a country if immigrants so even if he isn't from here he's no different than anyone else in here. The chorus is basically a rebuttal saying that even if he did gain Presidency and he did break the citizenship rules, what makes you (general population) any better than him, when we have the freedom to make a difference and your average Joe "wouldn't try to lend a hand" to help others see his point, whereas Obama utilizes it however he can; and if you're so much more american than him why aren't you trying to make a difference? The bridge is just a metaphor saying that we all have the opportunity to see but we're too busy on stupid issues such as race and origin instead of focusing on what really does matter. |

I really feel I can connect with this song... my best friend of 10 years used to be a devoted believe in Christ along beside me, but about a year ago he started drifting away... instead of worshiping the God of this world he instead worships the world and has turned his back for partying. The noose and neck part reminds me of his addiction to smoking whatever he can get his hands on.. he has many respiratory problems and the cigarettes and all the smoke is killing him. He doesn't want help, and honestly I hate who he is now but I can't let go. After just hearing this song, it reminds me that I can't take this burden alone... it's all in Gods hands and all I can do is love him and show him Gods love and pray and hope that he comes back, not just for my sake but for his. All I know right now is I want my friend back...... |

I don't see why people seem to think every song ever written is about a breakup... I think that the song may be about confrontation in a relationship about a problem that he's finding with the person he's confronting, whether that be a girlfriend or just a friend it doesn't matter, and that when he tried to "paint the picture" (show what's wrong) they take it the wrong way and a lot of tension is caused. This songs about him pleading that he doesn't want to lose them, just to try and work out what's wrong. |

I'm sure no ones gonna read this, being on the 19th or 20th page... but here my 2 cents. 1) I'm tired of EVERY songmeaning being interpreted as a boy being head over heels for a girl, sure some are but so many aren't. 2) I doubt this is that generic first thought "about a boy who misses a girl but thinks shes too good for him" This song is about the death of someone who was close to the songwriter. friend, family, maybe significant other... who knows? "... the shadow in the background of the morgue the unsuspecting victim of darkness in the valley we can live like Jack and Sally if we want" This line is a strong definite reference to death. The morgue is self explanatory. An unsuspecting victim could hint to some freak accident or sickness... no one knows when there time is over, and the darkness is a symbol of death, the valley representing the valley of death symbolism also. Living like jack and sally, obviously references nightmare before christmas, which is in some sort of death underworld (I haven't seen the movie, but I know about it) and how once he passes too they can be together again. The second verse anecdotes the feelings after death... how the loss of another can eat you up inside. The indecision to call and hear their voice is likely a call so that he can listen to the voicemail as a remembrance... I know friends who have done this after one of my friends passed, and I'm sure it's not uncommon to do this just so you can hear a lost love ones voice Stop relating everything to someones damn ex. |

I cant read through all 7 pages of comments so sorry if I repeat But the beginning isnt "Thats more sweet, so delicate" Its "Sad, small, sweet, so delicate" which refers to 4 of the band members I think sad=adam small= (eddie or mark ) sweet= shaun delicate= Fred Notice how sweet and delicate aren't in "Sad, small, sure, hey porcelain" This signifies that "sweet" and "delicate" are no longer members sure= matt porcelain=Fred (his nickname in the band is "the old dude" and porcelain is usually old) "We used to be this dying breed" and maybe this also is hinting that "sad' and "small" were thinking about quiting because their love for the band was dying. |

My perspective is overlooking the 911, NY, and other political things. I think its about a guy who is about to give up his love, and if his love sees him in a better light, he will stay since hes ready to leave. He wants to tell her he loves her but he doesnt know how ("but I just didnt know how...") "Genuine and unprepared" kinda sounds like love since it is found in the most strangest places. |
