Bonnie 'Prince' Billy – Careless Love Lyrics | 16 years ago |
oh my, this song is so beautiful. the droning notes distantly in the background, coupled with the kind of hollow, lonely and unrestrained quality of his voice in addition to the cadences throughout the song remind me of a hymn. |
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy – New Partner Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I understand this song to be about a relationship what ended without a conclusion. Things between the first girl and the narrator slowly kind of fall apart, maybe there's no communication, maybe he cheated and she found out, but the line: "Well, I would not have moved if I knew you were here" illustrates that notion pretty clearly. He wouldn't have cheated or found a new partner if he knew what she wanted. now he realizes she still wanted to be with him and he can't get back to her and additionally, he's stuck with this other girl which is still good, but the first girl was always better. |

Calexico – Crooked Road and the Briar Lyrics | 16 years ago |
this song wins. pretty straight-forward, and the story is so...evoking? graphic, you know. |
Iron & Wine – Wade Across the Water Lyrics | 16 years ago |
if you're angry, "manuelturcios", maybe all you need is sam beam. |
Iron & Wine – This Solemn Day Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I like how the perspective in the song changes from beginning to end...at least, that's the way I see it. The first is from an old man's point of view, talking to his wife/family. The second is a little blurry, but maybe it's the grandpa's final thoughts, like an echo right after his death. the third is a third-party narration of his estate and the lonely house he left behind. The last is his surviving family, children or grandchildren perhaps, recovering in the wake of his death. this song wins. |
Iron & Wine – Blue Leaves Lyrics | 16 years ago |
it's on his "unreleased session" that hasn't (officially) been...released. unless it has, and i'm wrong. |
Iron & Wine – Jason Loves Kentucky Lyrics | 16 years ago |
wicked banjo work, here! |
Iron & Wine – In Your Own Time Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I really get a feeling of, not necessarily "reckless abandon" for one's life, but rather making the things you do appreciable to yourself. "Making the most of your time" i guess. Take living, take people, take responsibility and take yourself a little less seriously. do what you want, or you'll fail at living and die angry. the stanzas are pretty clear-cut in reference to things in the world that conservative, maybe elderly, shut-in, watchful-eye-type people would call "evil": 1. In your life you will have strong (sexual?) desires be belligerent disregard your (judeo-christian?) faith at times 5. in your life, you will... not conform to a schedule sometimes smoke cigarettes (and other things?) fuck like a dog. (sam didn't beat around the bush here!) |
Iron & Wine – He Lays in the Reins Lyrics | 16 years ago |
the "tangled too tight and too long to fight" line maybe alludes more to materialism than living in the moment. One more drink and kiss and this and that leads to one more and one more and one more which all leads to despair. I need one more to get one more until i'm too wrapped up in the pursuit to gain anything else but STUFF. pretty loose idea based one a handful of lines, but hell, maybe there's something to this. |
M. Ward – Headed For A Fall Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"You can't get much height when you're so above it all" That line is great. She (I'm assuming the singer is male, directed towards a woman) is in this relationship with this "too good to be true" kinda guy, maybe in it for the money or lifestyle or sex, but no real passion. And while the singer can't really offer those things that the other man can, he can offer a real romance. She'll realize her "rut" of a relationship and end up back to the singer, who will gladly bring her down to earth. Mostly an over-used songwriting idea, but M. Ward just has a great way about him, i don't care. |
M. Ward – Get to the Table on Time Lyrics | 17 years ago |
all I can do is laugh and waggle my finger with this song...brilliant! |
M. Ward – Dead Man Lyrics | 17 years ago |
one of my favorite m. ward songs.....by far. |
M. Ward – Today's Undertaking Lyrics | 17 years ago |
it seems to indicate a divine motivation to achieve something. Ward suggests that his other songs were his own creations, but this one, inspired by some celestial entity is flawless, and written especially to praise that name. the bells towards the end of the song are really great, hinting at some kinda church bells, maybe? seems to fit. |
M. Ward – Rollercoaster Lyrics | 17 years ago |
well, maybe not petitchou...sure, the man/woman relationship is is an obvious choice, but isn't it equally plausible that these lyrics come from the mouth of a down-and-out kinda guy, rolling around the dirty floor, clutching a bottle of alcohol/needle/prescription of pills/pouch of cocaine? Really, it could be interpreted in any number of ways, whatever suits your fancy. |
M. Ward – Requiem Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I've got to agree with yellowinmymind, and just to add, the man must have been very opinionated with a strong character. Passionate in everything he did, you know...somebody that truly affected a person. Although, the fifth paragraph, last line should read "it suffered all of his faith if he failed." |
