The Velvet Underground – I'm Waiting for the Man Lyrics 14 years ago
I thought the lyric in the second verse was:

Oh pardon me, sir
It's furthest from my mind
I'm just looking for a "tinted" friend of mine

It didn't make sense at first but then I realized (at least I thought) that since he wants to avoid trouble, he doesn't even say, "I'm just looking for a colored friend of mine". He uses a synonym for "colored" which would be "tainted". A subtle nod to race in the 60s? Maybe. I listen to this song so much but I could've just heard a mondegreen.

And the lyric "It's furthest from my mind" kills two birds with one stone. It shows how he's just really wants to buy smack. But Lou Reed's homosexual proclivities are pretty well known. I thought of it like he's saying, "I'm just here to get drugs. And I actually have sex with dudes so stealing your woman is the *last* thing on my mind right now".

The Dead Weather – I Cut Like a Buffalo Lyrics 14 years ago
I've been listening to this song non stop (this and "Party In The USA"). I agree with the theme of sexual prowess. The line:

You cut a record on my throat
But the record's not broken

This may seem weird but between choking/gagging sounds seem obviously like oral sex. While the Dead Weather are considered "blues/rock/indie/whatever" there were actually comments about how even in "Treat Me Like Your Mother" Jack is rapping his lyrics (not a bad thing). And in rap/hip hop the term "to cut" refers both to sexual intercourse AND scratching on a turntable. When I listen to the song the choking and gagging sounds are mixed to sound like turntable scratching. So I think it's very genius of Jack to turn the term into almost a two-sided coin.

And there's the mondegreen ambiguity with the words "choking" and "joking", as if the woman is not blowing (pardon my French) some "endowed" dude but she's just joking. Like when some women fake orgasms. And by some, I mean "all".

So I think that may clear up the confusion about the "throat" thing.

Overall this struck me as a song about the sexual prowess of a woman AND her musical ability. Like a woman demanding respect (like the lyric: "you better learn to shake hands and treat me like your mother" in "Treat Me Like Your Mother"). Plus if you've seen the music video there's a visual juxtaposition of Jack next to the red-headed belly dancer (probably not of middle eastern descent as she has red hair; also, Jack loves red-headed women).

And then the album is called "Horehound" which is probably a pun. Even though it's a plant or something you don't see any of the other members of the band except Alison Mosshart ("hounding a whore" but I'm not at all calling her a whore).

All that being said, I'm going to listen to this song now.

Amanda Palmer – Guitar Hero Lyrics 14 years ago
This song also makes me think of the great debate that goes on after these tragedies: who is responsible? Moral panic parent groups who say video games are too violent? Musicians like Marilyn Manson? That's why I think the title of this song works the lyric "you're my guitar hero" is like a video game homage and also someone's guitar hero is who they admire.

"He taught you how to pause and reset
and thats about as far as you get"--the only time a kid sees their parents. Like this whole thing is a blame game. And from the musician or the "guitar hero" who people say are responsible is really dissociated from the kid: "I could save you baby, but it isn't worth my time....there's a million more in line."

Lyrical content and delivery of this song are amazing. Go Amanda Palmer.

Fiona Apple – Tymps (The Sick in the Head Song) Lyrics 14 years ago
I think "deep in dutch" means she was smoking a lot of weed. When she was on the cover of EW before Extraordinary Machine was released she talked about how there was a period of time in which she would smoke pot everyday.

"boon times when puts"--well something "boon" is something boon is something to be grategul for or a benefit...either than or Fiona Apple once owned and domesticated a baboon.

And "dried bled to quit"---that's an old method of curing mentally ill people when they got tortured and shit before Dorothea Dix was like, "y0, dude, this shit is inhumane".

AND FINALLY!!!

"Feet of clay" means (from dictionary.com) a weakness or hidden flaw in the character of a greatly admired or respected person: He was disillusioned to find that even Lincoln had feet of clay.

BUT THEM DRYING TO DUST SHOWS HER GROWTH AS A PERSON AND AN ARTIST! YAAAAAAAAH!

This is kinda used ironically because the image of Fiona being this neurotic/emotional/confessional/honest woman would be her "feet of clay" yet it's given a lucrative career. She be like selling mad records, y0.

Obur nd oot.

AFI – Miss Murder (Director's Cut) Lyrics 15 years ago
Ehhh don't wanna open a can of worms but I asked a friend of mine who was an AFI fan, "Is this song about Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain" and he said, "I dunno". And he was wearing a shirt with the lyrics of this song all over it. But I did like the rabbits in the video.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Cheated Hearts Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's about Slyvia Plath. Being "bigger than the sound" would be the sounds over the phone she heard of her husband's mistress...or something.

Le Tigre – Don't Drink Poison Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is supposed to be about self-preservation and how it's almost like, a spy mission. Goes along with the whole motiff of New York and whatnot.

Watch for the quick slip, money shot, vid clip
Walk by slowly, pass me the nurse kit
Don't be fooled by the sister vocab
Keep it light, put it on her tab

Heads up for this tonight
It's someone you'll recognize
Looks like lips and feels like teeth
Always waving to the people from the magazine

There's one thing they love to see
It's tear jerks for charity
And blank smirks all the way to the airport
There's one drink, on ice, oh I think it's

This is just pure speculation but I think it's about Angeline Jolie. She's known for her lips and her toothy smile. She's all over PEOPLE MAGAZINE and is always jet setting to do charity work in other via AIRPLANE.

The "lips" reference is also heard on "VIZ", about almost "fake lesbians". Angelina is like pseudo-bisexual, almost like she's playing a card or something. But she is mostly marketed to men.

Great actress though.

Sublime – 40 Oz. To Freedom Lyrics 17 years ago
No matter what your tastes, there is always a Sublime song that just makes you realize how awesome Sublime are. So that's one thing we can agree on.

I think it should be noted that Sublime was bffls with No Doubt, another Cali ska band. And Gwen has "her hair permed and her red dress on" on the cover of Tragic Kingdom. And in the liner notes she's "selling oranges by the freeway".

But this is not about No Doubt.

THUS, Sublime is awesome.
