The Killers – Human Lyrics 15 years ago
Hmm I like your analysis Sondralynn. I agree the song like other Killers songs seems to explore the question of life's purpose and what else is out there, etc. At any rate, dancer is in contrast to human in this song.

The Killers – Human Lyrics 15 years ago
This is an intriguing track. Although not as strong lyrically as others, still the Killers provoke thought.

I think the imagery speaks of 'dancers' as almost like 'puppets'. Brandon is speaking of letting go, "platform of surrender" "cut the cord" "close your eyes, clear your heart" This "letting go" is to cease to be "Human" because he no longer has life, (eyes closed, cleared heart) and he feels like a "Dancer", a puppet on strings.

The puppet versus human contrast is throughout. To be human is to have life and choice. To be dancer is to be controlled by strings or "cords"

He uses a play on words, instead of "vital signs" his "signs are vital" and "my hands are cold", i.e. lifeless, he is lifeless, and reading his signs are vital in knowing what he really is. He goes on to "say goodbye" to everything (soul and romance, etc), embarking into that "open door"

Like a slouched puppet, he's on his knees. Puppets have no strength in their legs. Yet he wants to "be let go" and to "cut the cord" could refer to losing his strings and being freed from control, no longer being a puppet. Or it could refer to no longer being human. If you "cut the cord", you pull life support on someone. In mythology, The Fates, "cut your cord" and you die, no longer with the life that makes one Human.

The great thing about this song is I can't figure out if he decided he is "human" or "dancer" and maybe he hasn't decided either, "Am I human....or am I dancer."

Great song after a couple of listens, gotta love the Killers.

Jars of Clay – Jealous Kind Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is just totally beautiful and will totally cripple you when you can relate to the subtle Scripture-inspired lyrics.

"Turning over tables" of course refers to Christ and the cleansing of the temple. He desires the same with our temples, our own hearts. When we put things or even people above Him He jealously envies our time and affection. (James 4:5)

This song speaks of the so called "hard love" we go after when we seek the things of this world and end up at the "gallows" instead of the aisle, on our way to the great marriage of the Lamb and the Church.

We are so unfaithful, like the wife of the prophet Hosea, a picture of us to Christ. As Derek Webb would say, I am a whore I do confess, I put you on like a wedding dress. That He would still love us jealously in spite of all this is just mind blowing.

I also agree with the comments of pearl and pyro. This song is awesome lyrically and very thought provoking on a subject I don't know if I've ever heard on any other song.

To me, this song is all about Christ sanctifying us and how often it's a painful process but it changes us into beautiful creatures for His glory.

What astounds me is how Jars of Clay continues to write inspired relevant lyrics. It's sick how at one part of my life or another I end up relating very strongly to their lyrics.

When I first heard this song I didn't understand it and definitely didn't relate it. Now it works to a T, except for the "flowers and candy" line. I dedicate this song to you SJM. Amazing stuff.

I agree. This song is one of the most realistic songs about marriage I have ever heard. The lyrics are heartfelt and real not idealized and once again proves that Jars are one of the greatest bands of the century lyrically.

Jars of Clay – Only Alive Lyrics 17 years ago
I just talked to Dan the other night, not specifically about this song but about songwriting. He maintains a song can be interpreted however by anyone but there is a core meaning to him when he writes it. I don't know what it is, but to me this song speaks of the faithful love of Christ to me, especially right now. I am feeling betrayed right now by a girl I have always loved and respected and after all the tears are spent where do I arrive? Nothing has changed but in a way He does stroll into my room. I am reminded by the Holy Spirity of His faithful love and I have peace. Out of all the loves I have known He holds my affection and will. I'm still heartbroken but He loves me regardless of my faults. He builds up my faith and I will someday become part of His bride. Our relationship is somewhat similiar to a marriage. In baptism I am saying, "I do." It's a public affirmation of my belief/love of Christ, just as marriage is. Because He always loves perfectly, the pureness of His love is like a rushing waterfall to parched lips of thirsting for true love, like a "newborn cry when there are so few" He IS my life, for my life is hidden with Christ. I am a fairweather friend but He isn't, He's always there waiting should I need arms to crash into. Jars of Clay writes some amazingly inspired lyrics in so many of their songs like this and this is just one of many favorites.

Jars of Clay – Flood Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't just think blindly. I love God because he sent Christ to take the punishment I deserved. I love much because I've been forgiven much. wwsd? you name is creative yet disturbing. We know what Satan would do. He seeks to appear as an angel of light to deceive all he can. He's a sinking ship and he wants to take as many people down with him to the lake of fire.
