I think Nick still has the number one entry with an elderly woman eating a piece of birthday cake in the deli of a grocery store. I mean that is truly, truly one of the saddest things I've ever seen. And women crying in airports by themselves, and then this idea of a grown man sleeping in a twin bed. The idea of somebody getting rid of their queen sized bed because what's the point of it if it never gets used, like 'No one is ever going to share this with me, and I'm just so disillusioned of the idea of finding anybody that I'm just going to go and get a smaller bed to make some room in my apartment so I can put some other sh*t in there.' according to ben gibbard, this is what the song means to him: "I wanted to create this character that's going through the motions, not really sure of why they're necessarily doing it because it's just the thing that they have to do at this point and it's expected that they're going to be doing this. It's not necessarily a story [about] any particular person in my life; it's as much an amalgam of a lot of different elements of how we move forward with our lives and what's expected of us and how we transition into those places."

this song is def about NYC. i saw them 4 times on the Vertigo tour (3 in MSG, 1 in Philly). One of the times in MSG, Bono told the crowd at the beginning of the song something along the lines of ,"you should like this one new york, it's about you, after all."
