Regina Spektor – Daniel Cowman Lyrics 14 years ago
i always thought this was about a man who's been sentenced to die, (Daniel Cowman) and he's talking about how he can't believe the world will go on without him...and then the rest of the song recounts his actions before his death, and his thoughts on it (it's not a linear song, i think you have to take the tenses and just roll with it).

The 'i don't exist, i don't exist" thing is because he's been sentenced to death: in a way, nothing he does matters, so he doesn't 'exist'. the bit about heroin boy is a memory of someone who suffered the same fate, saying that because he's 'destined' to hang he can't die in any other way, so he's getting into this bathtub even though he's high/it's dangerous - because it's not his fate to die that way.

correct me if i'm wrong, but i thought the lyrics were:

"and now that we've got that straight, does it mean that i can fly?
does it mean that i can do whatever i want?
now that we've got that clear, and you know that i'm not here
does it mean that i can do whatever i please?"

- talking to perhaps his prison guards, or to people warning him against his behaviour (like people warned 'heroin boy' against taking a bath) in a sarcastic way, like "so will you just fuck off now, please?" - showing the hatred and injustice he feels at his life being cut short this way. Perhaps some of the song is him explaining that now he's free to behave however he likes; he doesn't 'exist' anymore, his fate has been decided. it also makes sense in a 'death sentence' context explicitly, because technically there is no way 'they' can touch him now; he's already been sentenced to the worst possible punishment.

there's so much anger and hostility in this song, you really get his frustration at the injustice of his fate; especially in the last line, the blunt statement, that just sounds so tired and desperate - telling people to leave him alone, to let him have his last ever bath in peace.

Rufus Wainwright – Do I Disappoint You? Lyrics 14 years ago
that is such a wonderful, interesting interpretation! so theatrical, so Rufus. Even if it's not what he intended, i think i'll interpret the song the same way you did.

José González – Deadweight on Velveteen Lyrics 14 years ago
i thought maybe it was an image of finding the you inside yourself, but realising that person is not who you thought it was - it's a 'deadweight on velveteen' in that it's a deadweight on us; that the real 'us' is not someone we like...

maybe it's about the relationship as well, in that the couple realise they are both hollow and shallow on the inside, and still they keep coexisting, despite the fact that their relationship is 'Vulgar', because they're so beaten down by the fact that they're not who they thought they were. What a brilliant song!

Bright Eyes – Hit the Switch Lyrics 15 years ago
This sounds like it's about that endless cycle; drinking loads, getting depressed, drinking because you're depressed, over and over...the bit about his friend is just idle problem-solving in his head; "maybe getting out of the city will help? but maybe she won't want me anymore..." etc.

i think the hypocrite bit is like...drinking, he knows, is self-destruction...and yet even still, it gets to the morning and he prays to live, despite it being his own doing that he feels this way.

the last verse is like....resigned to himself. He knows he should stop, but really the drinking gives him meaning, and he reasons that without it, there'll be nothing to concentrate on...so he's just going to keep at it.

you guys probably knew all that. ahha.

Feist – My Moon My Man Lyrics 15 years ago
huh...i kindof like the idea of it being about anal. sexy. the 'take it slow' bit (best bit of the song, in my book!) seems to resonate on those lines...though it's a bit cheap if the title is taken literally as 'my ass, my man'

Marjorie Fair – Waves Lyrics 15 years ago
no idea what this is about...anyone? i love this, though - it reminds me of summer relationships, and i love the line "you're often thought about in waves"

Loney, Dear – I Am John Lyrics 15 years ago
i thought it was gay, honestly. (gay like...homosexual. not the other thing); he and johnny (or even if johnny's just a close friend) get lost + carried away and have great times, and he keeps thinking he'll let everyone else down if he keeps doing it; like he promises his friends/ everyone else that he'll be there for things, and he can't keep up with it; "someone I want now, somewhere I want to go, and I told you, never gonna let you down...but i will always let you down." - he keeps promising people he'll be there for them, but then keeps going to where he wants to go,and ends up letting them down.

idk a couple of things tie in with it.."and we know we can't go like this from now." - he feels like he's letting things run away from him by ignoring the other people in his life, and knows that eventually it'll have to end...some of the other stuff, too; "and everything must start from here, in a sunshine with ease with somewhere to go, with no sticky feeling of going wrong, no heartbeat asking where you're gonna go." - that's either a new relationship or an escapist relationship; a private one, where no one is telling them what to do and they can just relax and go wherever they like with it.

whatever i am almost definitely wrong, but i'd love to know what this was really about! i love his voice at the start when he said 'Johnny and I, we got lost tonight, we got carried away' because it sounds really perfect. i'm addicted to this song!

Scissor Sisters – I Can't Decide Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about (and sorry if it's already been said!) someone who finds someone so attractive (in maybe a creepy way) that they can't decide whether to, essentially, rape them, or to give in to psychotic urges and kill them, and then throw them into the back of their car.

"I can't decide whether you should live or die" speaks for itself, as does "my heart is dead inside...and petrified" , when coupled with "i'm just a loner ,baby" - he's a lonely guy who's found someone he likes, and he wants release from either fucking them (because they're attractive) or killing them (because the fact that they're SO attractive and wouldn't get with him makes him crazy).

"It's a bitch convincing people to like you" also implies that it's the kind of guy who has no friends and isn't terribly socially apt.

i think the situation is at a party; something he hasn't done in awhile. He's one of those guys who has been let down by life and he's soured by the 'bets and betters' all around him; then he sees them across the room, goes over (probably looking creepy) and attempts to flirt with them, is VERY irritated by their (making fun?) rejection of him, and then decides "well if i can't have you, no-one can! aha!" I think the song sounds so upbeat so as to create irony with the lyrics, much like '97 Bonnie and Clyde' by Eminem.

there we go. that's my two cents.

(oh, and the lyrics are "If lies were cats you'd be A litter"...as in a litter of cats. not cat litter. lawl.)

The Dresden Dolls – Bad Habit Lyrics 16 years ago
That's fucking AWESOME. Hahah - naturally, i assumed it was about cutting. That's just...surprising, and fantastic. I think everyone's got bad habits that we know we should stop but never will. (and not just hardcore bad habits, like drugs and cutting)

My favourite line here is 'Even if I quit, there's not a chance in hell i'll stop.'

fantastic :D

Imogen Heap – Headlock Lyrics 17 years ago
huh. i always translated it as being in love with someone else, and trying to get into another relationship with someone who knows you can't let go of the past, of that other person you loved. So the 'stranger an unexpected smile' thing, etc, could just mean trying to prove you're no longer pining after someone else - as it's been said before, trying to look carefree and avaliable.

Rufus Wainwright – The Origin of Love Lyrics 17 years ago
god, i don't even know why this makes me cry!

i love it. I've always been a fan of Greek Mythology, but...agh.

Fall Out Boy – This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race Lyrics 17 years ago
-sighs- this will always happen, eh? i think some people need to realise that this is just a song.

(and why is GAY an insult, now? One doesn't understand why homosexuality is so terrible.)

i really like this song, personally. it's got a fab beat, the same amazing tone of FOB's more dancey songs - brilliant.

if FOB has sold out or lost anything from their music during their career, it doesn't matter. compared to other bands, they'll always be the best in my book.

plus - dude. JUST A SONG. not a definition of status.

Suzanne Vega – Small Blue Thing Lyrics 17 years ago
This song - and Suzanne's two albums "Solitude Standing" and "Suzanne Vega" have been with me since birth.

I know this isn't about the song...but i adore her music. It's been such a huge part of my life, though i've never seen her in concert...just these few songs, such as this.

I think this song isn't about any object at all - rather, an emotion, or she as a person - her personality. Maybe not suzanne in particular, but someone...

beautiful artist, beautiful song.

Lily Allen – Smile Lyrics 17 years ago
the meaning is obvious. everyone's been treated like so much shit that it's not possible to be 'reasonable and polite and kind' about a break-up. lord, there have been worse real-life break up revenges than this video. (eggs...car scratching...eyes clawed out...Hell hath no fury, and all!)

typical song from a lovely, funny girl with gorgeous lyrics and a beautiful voice.

Dude. Tell me i wasn't the only one laughing.

Regina Spektor – Oedipus Lyrics 17 years ago
In my opinion, this song could be seen as about a mother whom had been one of many 'queens' - and one who rejects her child, perhaps due to that. ('to see me made her awful sad', etc.), since mothers whom reject their children often refuse to see or touch them.

i do think this is...loosely connected to the greek myth of 'Oedipus' - but only in connection to both the story and the condition; i.e this boy's love for his mother.

the chorus (though confusing - and you may disagree with this) means the snap of the child - in that he has realised his place in life and immediately wishes change, screaming 'OEDIPUS REX!' (rex meaning - even sounding - large, mighty, tall), as a metaphor for him finally demanding what he wishes for, instead of lamenting for it.

i agree with bryce, actually. it does sound like it....actually, it might be similar to that the whole way, if it's so pro- reckless abandon and such. (much support from over here ;D)

Regina Spektor – Love Affair Lyrics 17 years ago
yum.

XDD i just love this song, all too much. her use of her voice here is fantastic, and so...well, it always reminds me of those old fifties' singers in little taverns, singing away to a piano - but regina would be one with a spin, since she sings about hookers and prison ;D

well it's obvious what this song's about, but as for what it means...i suppose it's about how sensational things get in a small area (like any apartment building)

haha, i love this song. it's so simple and childlike in the way that the subject (whoever it is) speaks. i like the bit about the dishes...

funny. whenever i get bored, this song comes into my head and i just have to sing it.

Regina Spektor – Reading Time with Pickle Lyrics 17 years ago
I love Regina spektor. i love her, i love her, i love her.

this song in particular...i think it's a little silly fantasy of someone who believes love powers everything, every question and every answer.

at first i thought maybe it wasn't between the jar and the solitary pickle, but between a human and the jar, some weird kind of friendship or love...

maybe not ;D
