Interpol – All the Rage Back Home Lyrics 9 years ago
Love this song. In the lyrics I added quotations below...

When she went, "Love, come over",
My head abounds,
Oh, the feelings.
And she wept, "Hold me again",
I made no sound.
Oh, the beating.
And she swore, "Love is never gone, so easily."
And we went over again,
My head abounds,
Oh, the feeling.

She said, "You don't need time,
Be tame, you won't meet your mate inside.
My faith won't lie."

He said, "You don't need mine,
Be tame, you wanna leave my lady lovers,
of my 18 summers, alone?"

She said, "You don't read minds.
Be patient, you won't leave me shaken,
Leave me shaken."

I keep falling,
Maybe half the time,
Maybe half the time.

I keep falling,
Maybe half the time,
Maybe half the time.

It's all the rage back home,
It's all the rage back home.

When she said, "Love, come over",
My head abounds,
Oh, the feeling...

She said, "You oughta refine, be paid,
You wanna see my face in lights?
My faith won't lie."

But my sweet, you don't read minds.
Come away and just say you love me,
just say you love me, alone.

She said, "You don't read minds.
Be patient, you won't see me shaken."
Well I've been mistaken.

I keep falling,
Maybe half the time,
Maybe half the time.

I keep falling,
Maybe half the time,
Maybe half the time.

It's all the rage back home,
It's all the rage back home.

All the rage back home,
All the rage back home.

I keep falling,
Maybe half the time,
Maybe half the time.

It's all the rage back home,
All the rage back home,
All the rage back home.

Falling,
Maybe half the time,
Maybe half the time.

It's all the rage back home.
All the rage back home,
All the rage back home,
All the rage back home.

I read this as a guy who is worried about his past many loves and how that's affecting his present love.

They are falling in love ("head abounds, oh the feelings"), but he is hesitant to love her so much ("I made no sound"). She persists ("love is never gone" i.e., I love you now and forward, implying she will stay), and she tells him not to worry about his previous lovers because she is here ("you won't meet your mate inside"... I take inside to mean, inside his mind?). She has faith in her love for him, and she will not be left "shaken". "Be patient", wait this out longer, and you'll see I won't leave you, I won't be bothered by your past, etc. Reassuring him that she's telling him the truth, because, he can't "read her mind".

But he still doesn't believe her and remains hesitant. So he falls in love, but "maybe half the time". This reminds me of the "High Fidelity" quote where Cusack's character says he realizes he always had one foot in and one foot out the door in the relationship.

She tells him that if he really wants this love, and for them to work ("you wanna see my face in lights?"), he's going to have to believe her. He asks her for more reassurance ("say you love me, alone"). Then he admits his disbelief still... he's been told all these things she's saying before, and love still failed ("Well, I've been mistaken").

Not really seeing how "all the rage back home" ties into this... maybe because it's more desirable for males to have more lovers ("18 summers") than finally committing? Hmm...

Pavement – Range Life Lyrics 12 years ago
Interesting point. Roving means able to be shifted from place to place, not settled in one location - the opposite of a "range life". Maybe he's trying to draw attention to that by putting "range" in front? Shifting from place to place to different "ranges" so as to find where to settle down?...

To be honest, I always thought that lyric was alluding to the Range Rover, the ridiculously expensive SUV. The second generation of the Range Rover came out in '94.

Food for thought.

Sufjan Stevens – Come On! Feel the Illinoise! (Part 1: The World's Columbian Exposition; Part 2: Carl Sandburg Visits Me in a Dream) Lyrics 12 years ago
"Even in his heart the Devil has to know the water level"

I think this line implies that there is inherent goodness in all of us. I picture "the water level" as being the level when you know you have done a terrible thing, gone over the edge - it may be farfetched, but I picture the "Devil" filling a room with water with someone inside it... yet he knows the level at where to stop the water so that the person inside the room doesn't drown. He may push the limits, but he knows when he could stop so it doesn't go too far and drown the person.

By being aware that such a level exists, the "Devil" can identify the difference of right and wrong. Whether he acts on it or not is a different matter. But the fact that he can see it speaks to, like I said, an inherent goodness... or potential for goodness... in all of us.

The Tallest Man on Earth – The Drying of the Lawns Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this is about a guy who is completely starstruck in love with a girl, but she doesn't feel quite the same way. Let's look at the verses...

"She said I cannot tell you why, she said I'm in a rush
There are softer dreams for you to think about now, love
Things that you have seen this night runs by this river's flow
I can use you if you're in the flame, I'm a-growin' old"

She cannot tell him why she doesn't feel the same way, she doesn't really want to dissect it because she is in a rush. She hopes to let him down easy, so he will move on and have softer (more attainable) dreams. "Things that you have seen this night runs by the river's flow" makes me think they shared an intimate moment, but like a river, she's explaining that it passes quickly and is gone - it just happened. She used him in the heat of the moment.

"Well I said I've sailed the frozen corners of the dark Atlantic Sea
And I drifted on the waves and the mirage beneath
And never have I felt such numb and pointless searchin' true
As when I set my eyes on torched up lands of the mark of you"

He responds back saying he's completely in love, he's finally found the one, etc.

"She said you follow me like sheep that think this king could do some harm
But I tell you boy, I'm frightened still with a sister's heart
I set my eyes upon the shore whenever you wake up
I'm leaving because you don't feel what you're dreamin' of"

She points out how attached he is to her already, how protective he is ("follow me like sheep"). Not sure what to think of the sister's heart bit. The line "I set my eyes upon the shore" makes me think when he "wakes up" or is around her, she's always looking away from him, toward the shoreline, for an escape. She doesn't want to be with him ("I'm leaving"), and she finally says the reason why: because she thinks his love is too much, too full of dreams in his head, and not how he really feels.

"But I will stand down in the hallway with no thought to leave the set
Of a movie I will sure as hell not end just yet
If evenings are for romance, then this morning is for us
It will never end and our last dream will leave this house"

Love him likening their "talk" to something like a movie set... it sets an even more dramatic tone. He stands up and says he will not leave, even after the romance is gone. His love for her will never end.

And now the chorus makes a bit more sense. She keeps saying this is not the "summer dream" love that she wanted, and she wants to leave him to dry "out there". But in the last verse, HE says it's not the "summer dream" love either... it actually IS real love... and that yes, she is frightened, because she wants to leave the both of them out to dry (not just him, thus the use of "leave us here").

The Tallest Man on Earth – Love Is All Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it's about a man who is disillusioned with love, with relationships and friendships, like in "You're Going Back" where in my opinion I think he's describing about a falling out with a friend. In this song, he's describing an almost guilt and disappointment in himself for turning to the hate.

"Oh I said I could rise from the harness of our goals"... he sings these lines with such disappointment, like he failed his own expectations. He tries to cry about it, but he lets them go (I take the "BUT I let them go" to mean he doesn't cry, he lets the emotion "go").

"Like a house made from spider webs and the clouds rolling in" may be imagery of a heart that's closed for business, that doesn't love, becomes dark.

"The future was our skin and now we don't dream anymore"... I think "our" and "we" refer to society. Skin is a very interesting metaphor for future... it's a way of displaying ourselves to the outside world (tan, tattoos, piercings, etc). But the fact that he uses "was" and that there are no more dreams suggests he views the future grimly with no new opportunities.

I completely agree with sytch. Not only is he describing guilt and hate, but he's also warning people to not come near him, to not even try. He now holds "evil" and he could manipulate your will and your strength... he portrays that he could have that power, and almost makes himself sound God-like with the line "Well I walk upon the river like it's easier than land".

I think the central lyric to this song is "I bet this mighty river's both my savior and my sin"... I think the mighty river is referring to the fact that he portrays himself as God-like by being able to walk on water. It's a savior because it keeps him from becoming hurt again, but it's his sin because it prevents him from opening up again.

Such a complex song. I love it.

The Tallest Man on Earth – You're Going Back Lyrics 13 years ago
I agree with Fennecfox a little bit but have a slightly different approach. I think it's about a falling out of two friends.

"I could roll you to hell
I could swim from your heavens
I could drive you so safe
I could walk you to here"
- I take these lines to illustrate how the singer cares so much for the person he's singing to. He'd go from one extreme to the other if the person wanted. He reassures the person that he'd be safe with the singer - he'd walk along and guide him. He'd be supportive and caring.

"Let us float in the tears
Let us cry from the laughters
When it's not for some sake
And the city's not near"
- Here is where the singer suggests that their relationship change... he suggests that they become more than surface friends, that they become people who share emotions not for the hell of it ("some sake") but to help each other, they become people who can spend the day out away from the city, away from the hustle and bustle, and be with each other and be happy.

"Well now, you're going back
You're going back, you're going back"
- But the singer realizes the other person doesn't want to do that. I take "going back" as not necessarily going back to being "surface friends", but going back as like retreating away, completely.

"But I hope you could hear
All the screams from the forest
All the ghosts in the trees
And the love of a dog"
- The singer wishes that he could have someone to talk to about his emotions. It's as if he has secrets ("ghosts") he wishes he could talk about, even scream out. I take the "love of a dog" line as the singer illustrating he wished that his friend could love him like a dog, loyal and dedicated and always there.

"You said, "Driver, please, don't go that fucking way"
You said, "Just let it go away"
You said, "Just let it go""
- His friend now saying, I don't want any part of this.

I also like to think about the idea of friendships looked on as "driver" and "person being driven"... whether it's always the same person in the friendship or if the roles switch throughout it... or whether it's a concept that applies to friendship at all.

Very good song, really applies to me a lot right now.

The National – Green Gloves Lyrics 13 years ago
I completely see that this song could be about losing touch with old friends and wanting to reconnect, but at first I had a different interpretation.

I thought this song dealt with simply peer pressure, so I view this song as not the narrator looking on the past, but that everything is happening in the present. He sees his friends changing their ways with a more drinking lifestyle, and it sounds like he's not at first too keen on it ("getting wasted"). Yet he still cares for them.

"Take another sip of them/it floats around and takes me over" is where the narrator is around his friends so much that he finally gives into peer pressure and starts to drink. But he doesn't "become" one of them... he wants to dissect them and understand why they drink in the first place. Thus he tries to "get inside their heads" to better understand, so he can "love their loves" (i.e., alcohol).

The "Cinderella through the room" verse seems like the narrator's reaction to him being drunk. "Best slow dancer in the universe"... he's weightless now, he's no longer dissecting his friends, he's enjoying it, being apart of them... he can put down his green gloves.

Then he snaps out of it, and continues his task of trying to understand why they are drinking ("Now I hardly know them/and I'll take my time").

Really interesting song. I love it.

Surfer Blood – Harmonix Lyrics 13 years ago
i thought it was "please don't wait for me to be like you/cause i'm not you", which i LOVE. but after hearing live versions of the song, i definitely think it is "up here". that lyric maybe refers to high standards of the other person.

also, the first 'chorus' goes:
'cause i won't wait around
for the grass to grow back now
i won't wait around
for your _____ to open, let me inside now

i'm not sure what the blank is... it sounds like it ends with a "s" when you listen to the live versions (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WempYPPsaWc). maybe "eyes"? that'd make sense...

"we knew to plainly walk away" should be "when you could plainly walk away", which definitely gives the song a different tone.

also, i agree with ruffianangelina about the ending lyrics. watch the live versions. that makes this song just that much better.

Grizzly Bear – Foreground Lyrics 13 years ago
two songs that very much stand out to me by grizzly bear is "easier", the first track off of their album "yellow house", and this one, the last track on "veckatimest". i wondered why these two would stand out to me so much, when i started to see similarities. it's almost as if "foreground" is a continuation of the emotions and feelings present in "easier", sung by the same person.

the person pleads, "let's recreate an easier time", but in this song it is like the person finally sees that the relationship should end ("can't connect it", "ten [fights] detected, nine in a wreck", "pattern evolving", etc).

in "easier" however, the person ends the song saying, "i still can't find you." perhaps this is what the foreground is referring to. the foreground is no longer the person he loves, as he still can't find them... the foreground is now the "pattern evolving" with the fights. the foreground is much clearer now, as opposed to background.

Generationals – When They Fight, They Fight Lyrics 13 years ago
there's one last line that's missing from these lyrics:

and then the words will come to you
driving through the rain
but there will be no one there to say them to
anyway

(repeat chorus)

i think this song is about two people who are very intense emotionally. when they fight, they FIGHT, you know? but then they can come from that and say, "i love you." it's almost as if they love each other so much that they fight with each other. it's not necessarily bad, it's just the way these two people work.

i love the line, "was it too much too soon, or too little too late?" i think it illustrates how these two people can certainly go from one extreme to another.

the last line kind of confirms that these people had their last fight and broke up, as the guy is driving away and realizes he has no one else to talk to, or fight with, or love.

about cocaine use. i don't know if this song is necessarily about him hooking up with a girl/"groupie". he may just be looking at this young innocent girl walking into the party, and realizing he used to be that innocent, and now he needs to get ahold of himself.

Simon and Garfunkel – The Only Living Boy In New York Lyrics 17 years ago
this song is to art when he went to mexico, but the situation fits other situations too.

to me, it's about parting ways (in a good light) with someone you care about - this is a goodbye song.

"get your plane right on time/i know your part'll go fine" - even though we're not together, i know you'll do fine in whatever you do, and i wish you the best of luck

"i get the news i need on the weather report" - we no longer speak, but i still hear about/ask about you through the 'grapevine'

"i've got nothing to do today but smile" - this line just captures happiness, the realization that though we are no longer together, celebrate the happy times we had (and to know that more happy times with others are in the future)

"i know you've been eager to fly now/hey, let your honesty shine, shine, shine" - they are growing apart and admitted it to each other (honestly)

true, "the only living boy in new york" line doesn't really fit.. but i take comfort in the others. :)

Weezer – My Name Is Jonas Lyrics 17 years ago
i think this song is about growing up. the wheel is jonas's future, and he's carrying it (imagining on his back). he reflects back when he and his brother were little and went to grandma's house with no worries. "things were better then" - when they were young. "we've all left the den" - they've both grown up. the choo-choo train is the train leaving to take them to work, the mundaneness of it all.

i don't know what to make of the box full of your toys bit..

but now jonas is realizing he doesn't like his future, his wheel. he calls it flat. his brother also doesn't like his future - i'm assuming that's what the words of concern are.

the last four lines are metaphors for their futures/lives - they are unhappy, the other workers are unhappy, so now they're going home. to grandma's house for tea? anything's possible.

The Strokes – Killing Lies Lyrics 17 years ago
i wouldn't say it's the weakest, but it's definitely not one of the best.. i'm not a fan of some of the songs near the end of "first impressions".

to me this song is about a relationship/friendship that is slowly crumbling ("you don't want trouble/well we might get some"). he wants this person to work with him ("don't worry/you can help me").

the lies are all the idiosyncracies that annoy each other (they don't express the truth, they lie, pretending they don't bother them). he realizes this is the cause of the trouble so he wants to kill them.

second verse seems like the person won't work with him, so he gives up ("before i let you go"). at the end, though, he still recognizes the person as a friend.

The Strokes – Razorblade Lyrics 17 years ago
at first i didn't like this song.. the chorus ("my feelings are more important than yours/drop dead") sounds very selfish. but then julian's voice comes in so sweetly at the end, "sweetheart, your feelings are more important, of course"

i take it as a guy likes a girl, but she's playing hard to get and won't admit that she likes him back. so he gets frustrated in the chorus (though selfish and immature, we can ALL relate), but at the end he sacrifices his feeling of wanting to know and respects her wishes ("your feelings are more important").

i really treasure this description of the two people:
he would never talk,
but he was not shy
she was a street-smart girl,
but she could not lie
they were perfect for each other

Les Savy Fav – Hold on to Your Genre Lyrics 17 years ago
i definitely agree with leonperkin's and artformsnow's takes, but i like to apply the lyrics in another way. :)

i may be misconstruing this to my current situation, but it seems to me like this is the epitomy of the anti-establishment/stereotype song.

"hold on to your genre, your genre's got a hold on you"

the line "there's a promise in the backroom/see it written in the bathroom" seems to be mocking the sexuality of teenagers today - or more just, its increasing pressure.

we do magic tricks (rabbits, cards) to perform for others, instead of just being ourselves.

the bit "together, forever/the pity, the pleasure" are the strongest lyrics to me in the song.

he's looking at all this and he wants to have none of it. he doesn't want to be "established", doesn't want to be apart of the sexuality, the magic tricks.. he just wants to be himself.

still kind of hazy on the vampire imagery.. uh.. hahaha!

Broken Social Scene – Canada vs America Lyrics 17 years ago
this is my best guess at what the lyrics sound like to me:

your smile's like a cigarette
hooked on a feeling
so throw yourself down

your smile is a broken cliff
and your heart's full of cement
so throw yourself down

i don't want this chance (?)
minus the breathing (?)
so throw yourself down

the big guns are coming out
the big guns are coming out
the big guns are coming out
the big guns, the big guns, the big guns

i don't want to live
children are freezing
so throw yourself down

???
leave me for believing
so throw yourself down

???
blood and the bleeding
so throw yourself down

the big guns are coming out
the big guns are coming out
the big guns are coming out
the big guns, the big guns, the big guns

your smile's like a cigarette
it relies on this feeling
so throw yourself down

but i can't throw this chance
mine is this healing
so throw yourself down

the big guns are coming out
the big guns are coming out
the big guns are coming out
the big guns, the big guns

Broken Social Scene – Shampoo Suicide Lyrics 17 years ago
this is my favorite broken social scene, and i'm not sure why! there's only that one lyric i'm positive about which refers to the title: "you had it all and you still use shampoo".

to me, it's not about the lyrics though (at least, the other ones.. i think that one alone is powerful enough for the song). it's definitely about a break-up - that's apparent. this song is a cumulation of everything.

i like the idea articulates said, "a thought he keeps to himself".. that's exactly where i'm coming from. this is his stream of consciousness after the break-up. everything's distorted and strange. at first, we're just getting used to the idea.. but the honeymoon is over about a minute and a half through when the bass comes in; we finally feel the hurt. the beat picks up, slows off at points.. it goes from there.

this is my take on the lyrics.

our lives were one
our lives were one
our lives were one
our lives were one

our lives, our lives, our lives, our lives

it's a broken heart
how they need something that's so harsh
if you could take this time we spent

i went, went on, to feel
i'm a broken heart in a room

and we took a second look
it shows nothing's gonna come
leave me to kill and i never will
know the truth, the truth

choose someone, if you die
you suffer the broken heart

i fall in love...

and your teeth got wrapped around
just can't speak, just sit in your house
never never never fucked with it, never fucked with it, never

you had it and you use shampoo
you had it all and you still use shampoo

it felt so good
until you'll never die
she will fuck with your first kid

i'm thinking of that first time
i'm sitting cold - that was love...

i trust in you
and your shampoo
you had it all
and you still use shampoo

now who're you talking to?
like you're sucking a dick

and it tastes so good
dreams and a wish for you
i've seen the jaws and they taste so good
saw the jaws and they taste so good
i've seen the jaws and they taste so good
tasting the jaws and they taste so good
you've seen the jaws and they taste so good
