By the way, I think the video makes it clear that this song is intended to make fun of 'woe is me', pretentious, humourless songs. Look at the way he mouths "droplets of 'yes' and 'no' in an ocean of maybe" in the video. It's clear he's taking the piss.
I mean, it's arguably one of the most funk-tastic songs they've recorded, so I think the lyrics are meant to be taken as ironic. The band The Smiths did the same sort of thing... |

Hmm, I've always felt - especially after seeing Morrissey's deliberately twisted facial expressions in the video - that the intended message of the obvious sarcasm running through the song is that the girl was put into a coma by the man, and the man is feigning his concern. I also get the feeling at the end that when he says he wants to see her at last, that he actually kills her so no one will find out what he's done.
Although I also liked the suggestion that he had nothing to do with with her going into a coma, but he doesn't love her anymore and is secretly glad that she is in one so he can get out of the relationship.
Either way, it's by far one of the funniest songs I've ever heard. The video even adds to the hilarity. I find it funny that just about everyone I've forced to listen to it, has taken it at face value as a genuine love song. Even remarking of it as "sweet"! |

It might be worth noting that toward the end of the song, an excerpt from the film Blue Velvet comes in featuring Frank asking about "the fucking beers, man", who was a violent masochistic pervert. This goes on for quite a little while.
So, perhaps this is a humorous song from the perspective of that film character. |
