Gang of Four – A Hole In The Wallet Lyrics | 11 years ago |
This song is about women's rights, it's stated in the second line: "Women to know that they are equal." My take is that this song is sarcastic and meant to point out the flaws within the institution of marriage. "Why work for love if it shows no profit You'll only earn emotional losses Wasting time a hole in the wallet There is only one condition Stay in bed or in the kitchen" The first part of these lines could be directed at either men or women; the second is very clearly speaking to the expectation that women should satisfy their husbands' needs, and that is all that is expected of them. Interesting how relevant this song is today, and how it is a relatively egalitarian commentary on gender... applauding Gang of Four for not perpetuating chauvinism and misogyny in these lyrics, like most other artists from their time (who are we kidding, even today). |
Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks – Dragonfly Pie Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The first lyrics are wrong. "Of all my stoned digressions Some have mutated in to the truth. Not a spoof." |
Kimya Dawson – Being Cool Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song is about Kimya's old band, The Moldy Peaches, and how she's matured since then. The first line is a reference to the song "NYC is like a Graveyard." |
Kimya Dawson – Velvet Rabbit Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This is a song about youth and the confusion of puberty & peer pressure to have sex. The velvet rabbit is a euphemism for a vagina. |
Sufjan Stevens – Jason Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Wow, I can't believe people would be so ignorant about Sufjan to think this was a homoerotic song AT ALL. This song isn't actually reference to the Biblical myth (or maybe it is partially), but actually the Greek myth of Jason and the Golden Fleece, which is perhaps the greatest Hero story of all Greek mythology. You can tell these because of the reference to the Argon, because the heroes who went on the quest for the Golden Fleece were called the Argonauts. Albeit I don't know much about the Biblical myth -- it could have referenced the Greek myth (a lot of Christianity and Greek stories cross over) but I know for sure because of the Argon reference that this is inspired by the Greek myth, probably just a song about how he was a great hero. http://www.mythweb.com/heroes/jason/ |
