| Actually, I think that the whole song is the viewpoint of the boy with the gun, the whole ideology of "him doing the greater good" presented through his viewpoint of how he's a soldier and he cannot be making mistakes, he's doing the "right thing". It is war, actually, but it's either the metaphor for his view on his situation, or maybe the influence of the whole "American idealism" (no offense, you know what I mean, the Bush style "we fight for what is good and just in the world) on the kid's mind so he gets an idea that taking the gun and shooting is the right thing to do. | |

Probably the best song off ASOP. Absolutely brilliant. But I'm really annoyed by people who compare anything emotional to backstreet boys and dish it as bad. This album is deep, and Anders' lyrics have improved a lot. The album is really a story, and it's emotionally charged and powerful. This song is just awesome. And it's not whining, it's called standing up for yourself. You know squat about what he's talking about, yet you dare insult his words. |

Why are you people fighting over the meaning? It's like most of the stuff off Phobia, it's open for interpretation, since it's obviously about an addiction. You haven't shown Ben intentions here, you've shown yours and your own addictions. Everyone recognized himself and what he wanted to. Back when I first heard this song, I just broke up from a very obsessive relationship, and I definitely saw it through her. Now I can see it in many ways. The same as Dance With The Devil. Actually listening to it more and more, the song has grown on me BAD. I adore it. And I kinda agree now with Cabres, tho I see it MUCH deeper than that. It's revenge, true, but I feel the lie "you affected no one's life, so i do you the favor" or "i'm not like you, blind and see through" tell a lot. The song shows kinda the superiority over the blind people around him, the world that doesn't see what he sees. The song sounds almost sarcastic to me. It's like a laugh at the certain kind of people, the ones who make a big majority of the society, people who act like they're "holier than thou" yet are "blind and see through". In this song, he "digs" through them...it's kinda like... Taking someone's "eyes" away. Someone's sight. So when I tell you this in the face and break your "sight" that you nurture as your own, yet so shallow and stolen, you really won't have anyhing left you pathetic hypocrite. Well this is kinda a deep and personal view, and I'm probably off track on a lot of spots, but that's how I interpret it, and it fits me perfectly. :) |

Hm, the song definitely seems to me like he's talking to a girl he was with after a long relationship that meant everything to him. He was with her because she reminded him of his old love, but he doesn't love her, and realizes she is not what he thought she was. He enjoyed talking to her about their miseries, but in the end, he realizes he doesn't want tof all in love again. Now the part that confuses me, is You're someone to the world And you're the world for someone You really think you have a future without me? There's a place not far away Where I want to take you The first snowfall is always the whitest And the part that's missing from the lyrics that goes "Well I don't care for you anymore, so why don't you f**k yourself"... Seems to me like she's been playing with him, so he's disappointed with her, realizing she is not even close to his old love. Tho the rest is a bit confusing. I agree with quite a few interpretations here, nice job. I've known this song for way too long, but just now I took the time to interpret it. One thing tho...the punchline of the song "die young and save yourself, could be taken in many ways. Not necessarily literal. I mean, if we're talking here about growing up, losing that "glowing" view of life and relationship and facing the life in it's blackness, then "die young and save yourself" would be - kill the hope and dreams in you and save yourself the future torture it will bring you. Die young - meaning kill the kid in you before you're really aged, cause later, it'll no longer be your hope and dreams, it will be your pain and suffering. |

It's a really beautiful song. I adore Minutes To Midnight, and I'm getting the CD when it comes out for sure. It's obvious it's about losing someone dear, a lover. Literally taken, it seems that someone has died and he is standing at the funeral (the grown below grew colder, as they put you down inside), though I guess it could be taken metaphorically as well. Brilliant nonetheless. I love how it builds up to the chorus. It really amazed me. The piano part and the chorus are my fav parts. :) Go, LP! :) |

| It has nothing to do with a "third party". Nothing necessarily at all. The serpent in paradise is supposed to be a symbol of mistrust or betrayal. It's supposed to mean that something is coming between them, killing their feelings, and their relationship is falling apart because of it. This song is a masterpiece. It's EXACTLY about what we're discussing here. It's the moment when he decides that he will go his way, that the sound of their music will change, but it will work as he wishes. Judge me now! I used to be afraid to let it show, but now I'm a king in my own mind, where everything's in place, so much brighter from today. Yeah. Anders pretty much gave you the answer to your "criticism". He doesn't give a damn. He's not in this to be a slave. He follows his way, not the way you or any other likes. If you're so stuckminded to always want just the same stuff from a band, then stick to the old albums and keep away from ANYTHING that sounds at least a BIT different. This song can be taken in many ways. I like to take it this way - you follow your way, and yes, you will be judged, and today will feel so dark and lonesome because of it. But eventually, you will realize you've followed YOUR way. and didn't give into what others say, and a new, brighter day will come. I really hate how people go around saying "this and that" is garbage. Like most of In Flames songs, this one also has lyrics you can take in many ways, and can think about. Yeah, it's not one of their best, but it's pretty good and a decent song off this ingenious album. The most imporant rule of poetry is that you see what you want to see, a reflection of what's inside you. I can write some bullshit and give it to you, yet you may interpret it as a masterpiece, seeing things from inside. If you see things as total garbage, either you just don't get the song. or what you carry inside really is garbage, and you should go and listen to music without lyrics, cause you obviously haven't done enough thinking in life. Yeah this song could be taken as a song of an alcoholic, but I like seeing it a little wider, more as being "bottled" inside, as a ship inside a bottle, locked up and unable to sail, locked inside emptiness and awkwardness of today, and afraid if tomorrow will come. Yet there is a way out, a way to channel the pain, there are the lyrics he writes, there is the person/people he writes to, hoping to reach her/them. He drinks himself "sober", drinks the illusion of alcohol/poetry/dreams, and manages to create his world, his "Quiet Place", where he is the "King in his own mind". Yeah try connecting the song to others. The whole album is called "Soundtrack To Your Escape", right? The songs are standalone, but they do have a connection, yes? Don't take things so shallow. |

| The way I see it, it's the point where you're standing on the verge of an abyss inside you, in a world where you don't belong. I too see it as talking to a girl, cause it fits me that way best, but it can be seen as another person, a friend maybe, or even talking to himself. He says he believes in "you" -that person or himself - in what's beneath, in the truth, but he's too weak to stay on top and face it, but he sinks under, feeding "cold dead eyes" of a lost love, and in the process, stealing his life and energy away. Dancing with the devil, is the process of facing your self, evading self-destruction, evading the part of you that feels guilty and wants to destroy everything, The lonely people should know what I'm talking about. Every lone individual tends to self-destruct in such moments, and the dance with the devil, is the dance with your fear, your phobia. In this case it could also be something wrong in the relationship between him and "her", and it could be a process of facing those mistakes the last time, before they separate. It's about saying goodbye to "her" or to himself (could be a part of himself, not necessarily suicide, could be "killing what aches"). But he says "don't you dare look at him in the eye", cause if you look the devil into the eye, you can easily be misslead by your own weaknesses, and it yet again will lead to self-destruction. He wants to settle things for one last time, to face the fear, and then leave that "world", where he no longer feels safe but "helpless and left for dead", and so he decides to lay his heart out, and then for the last time, say goodbye.
