Swan Lake – Warlock Psychologist Lyrics 15 years ago
There's a lot here I haven't been able to cover (you have to love mumbling and overdubbing)
But my impression of the story is one that goes through a lot of Frog Eyes songs: a sort of romanticism of those who fight against the powers that be. Dotti is fighting an unwinnable fight against all creation, all authority, and in the end is taken away by the police.

Richard seems an almost existential figure. He's gone through life absorbing all the blows and now he's lost and is struggling through life without meaning.

Is the chord procession the same as Claxxon's lament? It sounds very, very similar at least.

justicehawver, that's seriously uncalled for.

And I know I want my lover to mother me before she eats me because her tender palms are not enough to keep me from eating myself.

I'm never sure of Spencer's religious beliefs but this song could have religious overtones.

"Do you believe you belong to someone?"
Need I say more?

Sunset Rubdown – The Men are Called Horsemen There Lyrics 16 years ago
I'll try to add on to what's been said as much as I can. Caballero means horsemen the same way knight, chevalier, cavalier etc. mean horsemen and there are many different connotations that go with the words.

Horsemen should be gentle and chivalrous but if one is 'cavalier' he is cock, arrogant, holier-than-thou etc. Just the same you have 'the men are called horsemen there' and the narrator's own confusion and identity crisis. He's not a horseman but does that mean he is cowardly or ungentlemanly or prudish? He says he's not a horsemen but constantly refers to himself as a horse (on horseshoes, if I was a horse) and as a sexual object.

I think this song questions not just sexual identity but identity in general. He's put on show and is fucked and his lover is fucking him which keeps him from withering evil ("trouble" whatever it is) but at the same time she's not an angel. At the same time his is apologizing for all his actions, things he was not sure about and feels guilty about. Everything to its own reluctance and contemplation

Sunset Rubdown – Three Colours Lyrics 16 years ago
These are the lyrics of the Daytrotter Session, transcribed to the best of my ability:

Do you believe that you belong to something?
I can’t believe that I belong to nothing.

Do you believe that you belong to somewhere?
I can’t believe that I belong to nowhere,
And I can’t believe that I belong to nowhere.

You go la, la, la.
I go la, la, la.

Oh, oh, oh, oh!

Do you believe that you belong to someone?
I can’t believe that I belong to no one.

And I can’t believe that I belong to no one.

Do you see three colors?
Do you see black?
Do you see blonde?
Do you see blue?
Do you see black?
Do you see blonde?
Do you see blue?
Do you see black, black, black, black, black, black blonde and blue?
Oh, oh!

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh-ho-oh!
ooooohhhh!
Oooooooo!

You say, oh, oh, oh, these cloven hooves.
Do you see another color, is it red, red, red?
Do you see another color is it red, red, red, red, red, red, red, red, red, red?

You say, oh, oh, oh, oh, ohhhh, oh, oh, this aching head.
If there are wings at my head then there is wind in my head,
You can only throw so many stones in a year,
So I hold so dear, my dear, to all these things that you said to me,
Oh, You said, “The shape of my hands are like the size of a head,”
Without opening up your eyes.
So, I said, “Thanks, oh, for the things that you said to me.”

You take a little wind, the wind in my ears, oh,
You take the little things, the things in my toes,
You gather up my sins, and you, you let them go airborne
You take a little wind, the wind at my ears, oh
I said, “Well, you should hear the wind at my window.”
You say, “okay, okay, okay, okay, okay”
I said, “Well, you should hear the wind at my window.”
You say, “okay, okay, okay, okay, okay”
I said, “Well, you should hear the wind at my window.”
I said, “Well, you should hear the wind at my window.”
I said, “Well, you should hear the wind at my window,
oh. You should hear the wind at my window.”
Go, oh, oh, oh, oh etc. Whoa, oh, Whoa, oh etc.

Sunset Rubdown – Setting vs. Rising Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm sure about all but the last two lines (I don't have the cd cover with me right now)

How you gonna sing a song that runs?
How you gonna sing a song that runs?
From the mouth of where the the singing comes,
From the mouth of where the song is sung.
Do you call a setting sun a sun rising?
Do you call a setting sun a sun rising?
How you gonna get the soil and the glory,
How you gonna get the soil and the glory,
When you wouldn’t give your harvester a light?
But the soil only turns under the moon. Shitty story.

There may be churches burning down next year,
If I'm a city then my citizens will pass no pails along.
There may be temples of temptation to take refuge in, my dear,
If I'm a city then my citizens will cast a vote as to:

Where you pray vs. what you're praying for,
And how you love vs. what you bargain for (?)
And where people break and what you're begging for. (?)

I think this is the amazing conclusion to the 'acting' motif thats apparent throughout Random Spirit Lover

It's about aging, appearances, suicide, individualism, marriage, innocence, god, fate.

I'm not sure, but I think it could also be in a literal sense the same woman from 'The Taming Of The Hands That Came Back To Life' which I don't *think* is Maggie from other songs.

Sunset Rubdown – Magic vs. Midas Lyrics 16 years ago
Oh, and in case anyone wonders, Midas was absolutely devoted to the God Pan and said Pan's music was better than Apollo's, for which Apollo cursed him with donkey's ears...

The 'Random Spirit Lover' recording sounds pretty good, so does the Daytrotter One, but... well, I'll see in October (huzzah for tour!)

Ah, yes, the lyrical analysis; it's pretty obvious that this song is about religion, but what it says about it is up to each's interpretation. I think it's about how every religion tries to explain what seems unexplainable or see a simple thing as a vast act of mythic and mystical proportion. "It's just a cloud" to one person could be "An Omen of Death" to another... or Smoke could be mistaken as an article of Jesus "Christ" or a pagan God's beard; it's just all a fallacy and over-analyzing (talk about over-analyzing =D)

Sunset Rubdown – The Empty Threats of Little Lord Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, it sounds like
"You are a beast and I am serving up your sorrow."

and for some reason the 'Lord' part makes me think this is about God; like two people - the first declaring himself independent and shouting his own free will and how important that is to him (he'd hurt God to be free) and the second person is either God or a priest who speaks of everything wrong with the world, which they see in the first person.

Modest Mouse – Truckers Atlas Lyrics 17 years ago
I think its oversimplifying the song to say its just about drugs or travel or any one thing.

Maybe about losing yourself in the borderless world... how you can go anywhere you want, now, and just do whatever the fuck you want. For example- the Lonely Crowded West; Los Angeles has more than a milllion people but if you go a hundred miles in any direction you'll come across places where there is virtually no one.

I dunno, the song just makes me want to go off on my own and simply travel aimlessly.

Modest Mouse – 3rd Planet Lyrics 17 years ago
I can't believe how stupid some of these interpretations sound to me. I'm not putting any of you down; this is a really complicated song, lyrically and musically, I'm just throwing in my $0.02

To me the song uses mythological (Judeo-Christian and other) symbolism to show the absurdity of religion in general.

"Everything that keeps me together is falling apart
I've got this thing that I consider my only art of fucking people over." - If you assume the 'me' to be religion then it shows how science and changing values are debunking religion as an antiquated institution.

"The 3rd planet is sure that they're being watched
by an eye in the sky that can't be stopped.
When you get to the promise land
your gonna shake that eyes hand." Obvious references to the stupid beliefs that many humans have. The negative connotation of many of the words show the satire in the lyrics.

That's as far as I'm daring to go: if anyone wants to pick it up from where I left off, be my guest.

Modest Mouse – Alone Down There Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm not totally sure about this song but here's my $0.02. To me, this song is refuting heaven and hell (and all religion in general)

"I don't want you to be alone down there..."
If hell is empty then heaven sure isn't filled.

And the Devil's apprentice would seem to be people... if you think about the song "Lives" "My hell comes from inside, comes from inside myself" then everyone has their own hellish parts.

"Flies, they all gather around me and you too" indicates the mortality of everyone (think I Came As A Rat "It takes a long time but God dies too") and how even devils die and decay eventually.

Perhaps it's about someone trying to convince everyone that their way is right (perhaps in a religious sense.)

And that, perhaps, even if someone says they're trying to make you happy, they're only trying to further their own agenda.

Modest Mouse – Whenever I Breathe Out, You Breathe In (Positive/Negative) Lyrics 17 years ago
This song reminds me of how I right after I had asked out my current girlfriend -

I missed my depression (hey, haven't seen you around in a while.) and was still recovering from it.

I couldn't write poems (I didn't go to work for a month
I didn't leave my bed for eight days straight) and I wasn't exactly happy with my girlfriend and thought about breaking up with her.

I began to cry when we were alone, but I kept saying they were tears of joy (I didn't feel angry or depressed)

Eventually I got over it... but in some ways I miss the way I could wallow in utter anguish and kill myself every day.

Modest Mouse – Workin' on Leavin' the Livin' Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's more of "Don't fucking end your life just because you think the afterlife is better."

Since Isaac Brocke is an atheist... it's most likely really sarcastic. The repetition reminds me of someone reassuring themself that after you die, it's going to be ok.

First part is so depressing...
Then... Yay! Everything happy.
Then depressed again.

But still an awesome song.
I think it's mostly bashing American culture... Very Religious for a Western Country. Thinks medicine can solve everything... Introverted... etc.

On "Building Nothing Out of Something" it goes really well before "Workin' On Leavin' The Livin'"

"In Heaven, everything is fine."

Modest Mouse – Baby Blue Sedan Lyrics 17 years ago
"And it's hard to be a human being
And it's harder as anything else"

Strikes me as so painfully truthful...
I think about this all too often. Humans have to keep showing emotion to prove they're humans... they can't be numb or the rest of society turns on them. People have to endure other people and everything wordlessly.

We have guilt, oh such horrible guilt. We also have a heritage that makes it impossible to have a clean conscience.

' Don't have much to say that hasn't already been said.

The girl that sings on this song, and, I believe, on some of the songs on The Lonely Crowded West, has a really nice voice.

To me, this song seems to be about how everyone just lives out their days doing the same goddamn things - nothing ever changes. People usually don't notice the cycles and repetition in their lives.
