30 Seconds to Mars – Night of the Hunter Lyrics 14 years ago
Actually, given the bits that are in French, this just always reminded me of the Count of Monte Cristo. Viewed through that lens, it really ties all of the directions this goes through together, particularly the bit about

Pleasure to meet you but prepare to bleed
Rise, I'll rise, I'll rise
Skinned her alive, ripped her apart
Scattered her ashes, buried her heart
Rise up above it, high up above and see

If I remember correctly, in the original book, the Count kills Mercedes, and this little stanza, I guess, kind of points to this "stranger" going back and "meeting" all of the people who wrecked his life.

AFI – It Was Mine Lyrics 14 years ago
I like the mental asylum interpretation, but I've always felt that you could put sort of a Bonnie and Clyde theme to most of Crash Love. If you're going under the assumptions that this is another concept album from AFI, and that it's about 2 criminals in love, then this makes a very fitting close to the normal album (Though the deluxe is far superior), as it suggests an interrogation. I always imagine two characters talking over the phone right before one of them knows he or she is to be captured and interrogated about their partner. It may not be the meaning, it may not be an interpretation you agree with, but I personally like to think of this song that way.

I'm pretty sure that's Nikki backing Brian up in parts of the verses. But yeah, it's just a breakup song, really.

Rumor has it this one's about a threesome. Personally, I can't see a meaning in most of the songs the Sundays wrote

Blue October – The End Lyrics 15 years ago
Probably the blackest, darkest fantasy to come out of Justin Furstenfeld's head, and it's brilliant in its morbidity. I imagine it's the companion piece to "Come in Closer" and really, the downside to the upside of it (though I imagine thinking of that song as light is hard, but compared to this, anything is). It's a simple song to get though; think about it. Man knows wife is cheating on him, man gets sick at the idea and snaps, then commits murder-suicide. It's really an odd choice to put at the end of "Approaching Normal" but nobody can say they lost their edge with this one. It makes me shake listening to it, but it's definitely my favorite.

Reminds me of the death of the band. Katie always sounds so cheated in interviews; it's quite sad, really.

Silversun Pickups – Panic Switch Lyrics 15 years ago
Brian himself said it was about a mental/nervous break down (say maybe a panic attack?) and the lyrics all seem to point to different events and situations where they could be happening. The opening verses seem almost to be a stab at the music biz, but the choruses and prechoruses seem more like a couple trying to keep each other calm through the chaos that's around them. IDK, I love Brian's lyrics, but can't always decipher them.

Gogol Bordello – Tribal Connection Lyrics 15 years ago
It's hard to say if GB would ever endorse socialism of any sort. I mean, at least a few of the members have to have lived through the Soviet era. I think it's a little less simple and yet strangely more beautiful of an idea: the typical Bordello theme of cultural isolationism being stupid and human beings being much more connected than we care to realize. That, and it just strikes up another call to action for having fun!

Gogol Bordello – Dub the Frequencies of Love Lyrics 15 years ago
First, since the word "tovarisch" confused me, I'll put it out there that it's supposedly an old USSR term for "comrade." This seems believable, as I'm sure Eugene's at least heard it in his childhood if not much more recently than that. This is a vague song, really, but I always look at GB's lyrics as being deeper than they seem. Eugene tends to take on Whitmanian themes and I think this song kind of says that religion divides people too much when so many of the major ones preach love and tolerance. It's a great theme if that's what he's getting at here and c'mon, the song is just so damn catchy and intense in a way that isn't like most other GB songs. Great stuff!

The Cure – Why Can't I Be Me? Lyrics 15 years ago
A relationship with someone holding you back is a possible take, but I wonder if, after all these years, Robert still struggles with getting the labels and such to agree with him and to let him do his own thing.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Speed Kills Lyrics 15 years ago
I think everyone needs to hear the version that's on the B-sides and rarities compilation. They put it up on iTunes and I just sat and stared incredulously, thinking "why was THIS not on the original Machina?" I hated this song on Machina II, all garbled and psychedelic, but gah, go find the proper studio version. It's amazing

The Cure – The Perfect Boy Lyrics 15 years ago
After a few listens, it seems to me like the whole of 4:13 Dream could be read like a loose concept album. It starts really innocently, with a couple falling in love, but this and "The Hungry Ghost" are where the problems really start coming to a head. If you're reading it that way (which is not to say that there aren't deeper meanings in all of the other songs), this is where it becomes apparent that the male in the relationship is not as commited to the relationship as the girl is. She's naive and in love and he's only in it as part of fueling his own wild lifestyle. He's not the perfect boy at all ;D

The Cure – Down Under Lyrics 15 years ago
This whole set of singles (which I like to think of as "the Hypnic Jerks") seem to take an interesting spin on the themes of sex, drugs, and general hedonism that Robert would usually cast the speaker in his songs in (I say speaker, as some songs just don't feel like they're about him personally). As opposed to being a willing participant, it seems like Robert's singing about someone who sees things like this and disapproves. There seems to be almost an air of ignorant young lovers there, as per the narrative in "The Perfect Boy" and the last line here. But yeah, like a lot of Cure songs that are poppier and fun, you have to admit, this is about drugs and/or sex lol.

The Cure – A Boy I Never Knew Lyrics 15 years ago
*points up*
What this means to me.....I lost my little brother right before his 8th birthday and, it never ceases, at the line, "The man I'll never know" I sob uncontrollably. This has been the only song that's ever helped me deal with missing him, and I hear that it will NOT be on 4:13 Dream. If that's the case, I will be very upset. This is an amazing song and proof that the blood of Disintegration still courses through Robert's veins. If it doesn't get released, this song will still remain one of the best things the band has done post 2000, if not the best, in my opinion

Muse – The Small Print Lyrics 15 years ago
I always get images of Mephistopheles in "Doctor Faustus" with this, especially with lines like "Be my slave to the grave; I'm the priest God never paid" and really, the whole chorus. It may not be a "right" interpetation, but it feels so ominous to me and it seems to fit really well for me.

Dave Gahan – Kingdom Lyrics 15 years ago
He struggles with the faith he's told he should be experiencing and yet isn't. 12 Step programs usually end in experiencing or accepting a higher power. So, in the eyes of a recovering addict (or recovered, I'd say), if you believe it, but don't feel it, imagine how that could be. I don't think this is a current thought process though. I think it's just old jaded feelings of.... "well, why has only so much changed?" It's a weird place between faith and doubt, so I don't think this takes a side. I think it is, simply put, a question.

Shiny Toy Guns – Ricochet! Lyrics 15 years ago
Rebound relationships? Ricocheting from one guy to the next seems a plausible meaning to me. I mean, isn't one of the common themes of the Shiny's music that of heartless bitches using or toying with guys. Basically the "I'm too good for you" idea followed by the "you're a skank" line of thought. It's really pretty biting stuff, I think

It wasn't on Aeroplane because it's an Adore Demo; it didn't exist yet. Still, this is one of the most haunting things left off any of the albums. These demos and b-sides have been a life-saver over the dry spell called Zeitgeist. Here's hoping they find real musicianship and real emotion again soon.

The Cure – Alt.End Lyrics 16 years ago
I love the Cure as much as anyone could ever hope to do, but this totally rips off one of the Smashing Pumpkins' first songs "Armed to the Teeth" from back in 1990, when the Pumpkins themselves were rather Cure-esque. Check it out on Livepumpkins.net. I think the venue where it was played live was called The Avalon or something.

The Smashing Pumpkins – For God and Country Lyrics 16 years ago
Comeback, I don't think it is at all. I don't think it's anti-american either though. I think Billy's more saying he'd be behind this war if it was really for God or Country, but it's not about either. But that's just my take on it. Some of the lyrics on Zeitgeist are a bit too vague >_

*points up* For shame Davey! You can't tell me he's never heard of them, so yeah...pretend there was a point to that. As far as meaning....I think it's just an unreciprocal sort of love. The speaker having to ask the other person to "Strip for me as I've stripped for you" speaks volumes when coupled with the "we've got nothing" bit, but I may be ignoring the bigger picture. People say Davey's lyrics are so deep, but I can't help but figure it's just about sex or if you must have a deep meaning, unrequited love.

The Smashing Pumpkins – That's the Way (My Love Is) Lyrics 17 years ago
Courtney Love still? That's my two cents, considering they've been having more to do with one another. It may not be a romantic love, but I still think this is for/to her.

Fall Out Boy – Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm not going to say it is or isn't better than the original (I love both versions), but for everyone hating this version, I would recommend looking up the "stripped" video on either Youtube or www.kdge.com (under the videos on demand sections). It's just Patrick with an electric guitar and it blends the bass and guitar parts here really well without being as hyper. It's really much more heartfelt and there's a part towards the end where his voice starts to resemble crying more than singing. It sounds shitty, but gah....it's amazing. That version is the song that made me like both FOB and Joy Division.

Blue October – Drilled a Wire Through My Cheek Lyrics 17 years ago
Actually, having personally known alot of rape victims, I think that's what this is about, the after effects on one's personality. The first verse hints at that well enough, whereas the last line could almost be sarcastic. I know I've heard constantly of attackers with close relationships to victims trying to calm them during the act. The second stanza seems to hint at sexual addiction, which is a common behavior after the fact, as is the self mutilation that kind of seems to come through in the third verse. I haven't figured out if it's from the point of the victim or the observer though. It kind of seems like the fourth verse could be saying that the person that did this to the speaker had it happen to them too. Since Justin usually writes about psychological traumas and such, this makes sense to me, but IDK if it will to anyone else.

Look at the liner notes for the deluxe edition of the CD "Pornography". Smith openly admits they were all WAAAAY high on LSD at the time. They had a room full of junk from garbage bins at their studio according to that interview.

The Cure – One Hundred Years Lyrics 17 years ago
Has anyone else noticed that almost all of the demo versions in the deluxe edition are of a much better quality? I love the demo versions deep, growling bass XD. Still, both versions are great, but the guitar in the official one overpowers everything else. I think this song is basically just about life and death though. It seems like someone's life passing before them. Think about it, people rarely live past 100, so that may explain it. IDK though. Just felt like my interpretation would make this comment worthwhile lol.

The Cure – The Hanging Garden Lyrics 17 years ago
Dur...the hanging gardens of Babylon! Have you people never had history classes? I think Smith's meaning makes sense, but I feel it was a tad vague. Babylon is usually used as a metaphor for excess and hedonism, so my guess is that it's just about people that screw without a care in the world and it ends up killing them emotionally and maybe even physically. I forget if AIDS and the like had been discovered this far back. Still, it's just about lavish horniness if you ask me.

I miss the grunge movement :'(. All these new bands that try are awesome, but none of them get big enough. There have been a few more in this vein, but all of the other songs about Kurt or Layne dying have sucked.

10 Years – Empires Lyrics 17 years ago
Jesse said that it was basically about their time in L.A. while recording this CD. They were so disgusted by the material excess that was all around them. He mentions on their site that people were driving cars that were worth more than some of the houses back where they used to live. These guys have a lot to say, and watch and see, I bet it gets them somewhere. Can't wait until their next CD, hopefully there will be one and it will kick ass. Wait, I know it will.

10 Years – Seasons To Cycles Lyrics 17 years ago
No, this really has nothing to do with God, I really don't think it does. If it was even dealing with Him, it would be him speaking, and the "you" would be people, in my oppinion. Now these guys are kind of Creed-like in they're stance on God, so don't expect every song to have a Christian theme. I think imthemaninthebox had it right from the very beginning. This song is my new 3 Libras, which is good, since I'm mad and Maynard for the Puscifer thing.

The Smashing Pumpkins – I Fall Lyrics 17 years ago
Well, this is a stab in the dark, but I'm going to say this is Billy's sort of plea for forgiveness for all of the things he's said about his band mates and friends. Cold – Goodbye Cruel World Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's actually about someone who's been so surrounded by death and violence and finally just kills himself because he's so desensitized and depressed. Everyone think's he's going to be suicidal, and he just decides that if they expect it of him, it doesn't matter if he does it

Flyleaf – Sorrow Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with Angie R. Basically, it's about the speaker interpretting being used as love. She can give and give and give of herrself, but the truth is that it really isn't love. It can feel amazing, but it's not actually any kind of real love. In time, she realizes that she was just lying to herself, but she doesn't hold the other person as entirely guilty, she allowed it to happen in the first place, so she's just as quilty. Honestly, I kinda think Lacey's been abused in a lot of ways or has at least had a really crappy life. I used to really hate this song because it was so quiet compared to their other ones, but once I actually listened to the words I changed my mind. These guys are going to get pretty big soon, watch and see.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Don't Wanna Be Your Lover Lyrics 18 years ago
It's actually a very interesting song. It kind of describes a situation I know well. My current gf and I were the best of friends for about 2 months and we both wanted to date each other, but we were terrified we'd lose what friendship we had. That's pretty much what this song is all about. He doesn't want to fall in love because he's afraid to hurt the other person. He keeps denying it because he's so terrified of losing her, he'd rather not have her at all than be with her and treat her badly later.
