Bruce Springsteen – The River Lyrics 17 years ago
First heard this song when I was about 10 or 11. Had never bought a single before and I just went out and bought it after hearing it on the radio once... and bearing in mind it only made about no. 39 in the UK chart, it was lucky I heard it in the first place.
It has been my absolute favourite song ever since. As someone posted above, the Live 75-85 version is amazing as were the two occasions on which I have seen him perform it live. That harmonica intro is really
breathtaking.

Sting – We Work The Black Seam Lyrics 17 years ago
Just stumbled upon these posts and curiously, the Carbon-14 thing has always bugged me.

I always imagined that he was on the one hand expressing concern about nuclear waste, but at the same time making fun of people who use bogus facts to prove their case (a big bugbear of mine). As you say, the Carbon-14 allusion is totally meaningless, because it's naturally occurring and perfectly safe. If I remember rightly, it's normally 4 or 5 half lives before things are generally considered safe, so if Carbon-14 were dangerous, it would be say 25,000 years anyway.
Rather typical of me to let this fact get to me for the last 20 years, but thenthe song was released while I was studying for Physics A'Level...

Peter Gabriel – I Grieve Lyrics 17 years ago
I've heard people say that this song was written about 9/11. It certainly fits perfectly, except that he first performed it back in about 1998 so it couldn't have been. Perhaps he just added 9/11 to the sentiment behind it when he finally recorded it.

Peter Gabriel – Don't Give Up Lyrics 18 years ago
Without question, this song was written about unemployment. However, I heard it played at a friend's funeral a while back and it took on awhole new meaning.
Very poignant.
