Misfits – We Are 138 Lyrics | 15 years ago |
If one says "we are one thirty eight" fast it maight also sound like "we are one dirty ape" ("in the eyes of the tiger) It might be about rioting and resistance. This is one of my favorite songs by them, together with Attitude and Last Caress. |
Dream Theater – Trial of Tears Lyrics | 15 years ago |
To my mind it's these lines in which the "meaning" of the song concentrates the most vividly. "As I walk through all my myths Rising and sinking like the waves With my thoughts wrapped around me Through a trial of tears" It's about having become jaded and uninspired, facing an inner trial which judges that one has "wasted all those years", it's about doubting who you really are. That also goes together with: "Under the sun, there is nothing to hide Under the moon, a stranger waits inside" When the sun is high you have nothing to hide, all is clear and your path is ahead of you, but then comes a time when you notice the sun is gone and the moon is up there, and doubt arises, you ask "who am I?" and thus "a stranger waits inside". The rain that's mentioned throughout is a deliberately created setting for thoughts like these. Rain is like tears in a way. |
Fates Warning – Guardian Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I read somewhere on the net that this song is a dedication to all the handicapped people, and John Arch's brother in particular. He said in an interview: "I have a brother who is quadrapaligic and has no will left, but for some reason outlives his life expectancy by almost 20 years. That inspired the mood for that song." He also said: "This past year Jim asked me to sing Guardian with them and after the show a guy walked up to me and told me he had been in a bad accident and he was told he probably wouldn't walk again. He said while he was in the hospital listening to Guardian he realized the message and what it meant to him. I felt really good knowing it helped him through a tough time in his life." So, you can see how meaningful and inspiring this song is. It's one of my all time favorite metal ballads. It has all the power and feeling that young, enthusiastic and talented metal bands possess. |
Dream Theater – Disappear Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It's about a man who's wife is going to die of an incurable illness. He's wondering how such could happen, and how he's going to cope with it. This is THE greatest ballad that DT have ever written. None of the albums before or after have contained a ballad this sublime and moving. |
Dream Theater – Vacant Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song can't be a prequel to "Disappear" because 6DOIT came out before "Train of Thought" that "Vacant" appears on. And "Disappear" is about a man losing his wife. |
Iron Maiden – The Evil That Men Do Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The album "SSOTSS" that this song is taken from is a concept album about the coming of a child with supernatural powers, the deadly sins and apocalypse (i think). The way I see it, the childs life is not all predestined - powers of evil and goog fight to dominate him and he may become one of the two: the prophet-saviour or something like the antichrist. I think it comes closer to the second in the end. And the songs follow him through different stages of his life. So this song is best interpreted within the context. I think it's about one of the deadly sins - lust, and a time in his youth when he slept with a girl and then left her thus becoming "the slaughter of innocence" - both the girl's and his own. Later he regrets it deeply. The carefree days of youth come to an end as "the book of life opens" before him and he realizes more and more that "the evil that men do lives on and on" because the past cannot be undone. The Shakespearean quote is very appropriate here indeed. |
King Crimson – One Time Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I don't know if I'm correct but to me this song suggests that life is fragile (In one breath we're dying) and we never know what hardships we may come to endure in life and that there may be no reward for our efforts. Also that we're like beggars when it comes to our future plans and their certainty, and our chances of changing what life has in store for us. |
King Crimson – Starless Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Why, oh why it's always the saddest and darkest songs that stick to one's mind and soul more than others? Well, mine at least. This is easily one of the best songs not only by KC, but by any of the classic prog-rock bands. It's hopelessness turned into art. There have been times when I listened to "Red" and wanted to skip the song just to not ruin my mood absolutely. How many times have I made it, you think? None. Zero. "Starless" always drags me in and I often find myself listening to it several times in a row. |
King Crimson – Facts of Life Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"Some of us kill but some of us eat." ??? I always thought it went like this: "Some of us kill WHAT some of us eat". But my favorite line is "doesn't mean you should, just because you can". The truth doesn't require cool and elaborate phrases to be expressed, it's best when said like this - absolutely simple. :) |
Fates Warning – Life In Still Water Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think this one is about being afraid to choose and to act, thus sentencing oneself to a meaningless and shallow life, or as the title says it - "life in still water", where there's no change, no challenge and no real happiness. "is there room still for us to grow within the bounds we've come to know" these words sum it up, I guess. |
Led Zeppelin – Tea for One Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Speaking of the similarities between this one and "Since I've been.." they're quite obvious I think - both are slow blues songs in 6/8 with hard-rocking overtones (outbursts) based on a typical blues chord progression. SIBLY sounds more despair-ridden and even a bit angry, TFO is more reflective and peaceful. |
Dark Tranquillity – Auctioned Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think this song might be about a person that has come to a "down" point in life and finds no strength in himself to overcome his weakness and that makes him feel even more passive and useless. Without direction and aims. Like lying on the lowest ground in life, where one feels like there's possibly no place to fall deeper, and still finding no strength to get up. But the song is one of the saddest i've ever heard. Really. And the guitar solo is one of those that i always rewind several times. So easy to play and still so effective. |
