Real Estate – Snow Days Lyrics 14 years ago
Jesus christ this song is wistful, I was humming along to the end part without even knowing what it was about, just feeling wistful. I read the lyrics and what do I get!?! Wistful.

Islands – Vapours Lyrics 14 years ago
I like this cool metaphor where ventilating is like singing and he's "ventilating" out "vapours" which are the manifestation of his songs, and then he can see the vapours (his singing) enter other people in a really physical way. great imagery.

singing in itself is a cool way to describe interacting and affecting other people which for me is a nice way to interpret the "guess i'm alive today at least" line.

Sunset Rubdown – You Go On Ahead (Trumpet, Trumpet II) Lyrics 14 years ago
What the heck does this song mean!? Its so freaking abstruse.

All the references to actors (which I'm taking to mean individuals, maybe thats just the postmodernist in me), sirens/lizards/big black car (temptation? corruption?) virgins and time passing lead me to believe that this song is about trying to remain pure.

Perhaps all that following has to do with a religious figure or deity of some sort (rather than a girl which i think is anyone's first instinct when trying to decipher a song)?

I really don't have any idea more than that but I love the "add up" stuff, that can go in so many interesting directions.

K'naan – In the Beginning Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is so beautiful. It just starts off like a freight train and hits you with this incredible, tragic story with this inspiring message. The emotion in K'naan's voice as he does the tragic lines "the knock on the door, his lord is no more, the knock on the door, his soul is no more" is just wrenching. Its hard for me to follow the stanza that leads to the awesome line "put up your fists if all you want is freedom" but it seems like he's speaking from the point of view of the corrupting forces that spoil the minds of so many youths. Perhaps these forces distort the idea of freedom in order to lure people in? This is supported by the lines "freedom for the hearts we fill, mislead them/ they hunger for the love we give, but we cheat them"

It seems like the final part of that (put up your fists...) is a rejection of all the negative forces that try to trick someone along the way to seeing "what it feels to be free." Put up your fists if all you want is REAL freedom, not the snake oil being sold by these terrible influences.

Sorry that that is so vague (corrupting forces? what am i talking about? i don't know) but obviously I don't know the specific things that he's referring and I don't want to speculate on the undoubtedly terrible things he might be singing about.

In any case, this song is so beautiful and inspiring. I love it. Its better to light a candle than curse the dark. Even out of some of the truly most devastating and unimaginable experiences possible out comes this beauty and hope in the most utterly eloquent way.

Elvis Costello – I Want You Lyrics 15 years ago
Obsession. Awesome. But in all honesty I don't want to ever feel this way, its heartbreaking to listen to. You just want to shake him up and tell him there are more fish in the sea.

The Mae Shi – Young Marks Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is sweet. I love the general theme of individual spiritual beliefs vs. an apparent rejection of like organized dogmatic religion that is in this album. I don't totally get these lyrics and maybe they aren't super accurate but it seems like its about the internal struggle of whether all this religion stuff is BS or not. I freakin love this existential-ly thinking paired with the fun music of mae shi its great.

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – Young Shields Lyrics 16 years ago
this song really captures the uncertainty of a post-college or early adult existence where you are trying to establish yourself as that real adult while at the same time totally dependent on your family and not really getting how good you have it and how much of a joke you may be.

i guess that much is obvious but I just love how well that disconnect is captured

Ola Podrida – Jordanna Lyrics 16 years ago
I love this whole album, I wish more of the lyrics were around.

I think this song uses singing as a metaphor for participating in the world around you ("living"), and the ovations are the satisfactions you can derive from that. There's a lot more to this song that I don't really get at this point.

The aimless stupor and willful withdrawal conveyed in this song is incredible. This has to be my favorite mag fields song, and thats a difficult praise to give.

Califone – The Orchids Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm not so sure that this song is explicitly about sex, despite the fact that he says the word "sex" in the 2nd stanza.

"Soft skin starts to shrivel" seems to be referring to aging, but I'm really not sure about the rest of the meaning.

What do you guys think about the significance of eyes, claws, metal and all the flower-related metaphors?

The orchid and petals could indeed be about a sexual experience, but the song just really doesn't seem to be able the beauty of sex, if anything perhaps a more general view on the beauty of the world? I'm not sure

The Mae Shi – Run To Your Grave Lyrics 16 years ago
Holy crap this song is good. I LOVE how the amount of jumping around and dance you want to do while listening to this song is exactly what the song is saying we should be doing with our lives. They overlap perfectly. This song puts you in the perfect mood to go out and live your life to the fullest like the song suggests.

Tom Waits – Never Let Go Lyrics 16 years ago
Man this song is great, that new Tom Waits stuff is great. I can't exactly navigate through all of the metaphor and imagery in this song but it seems basically to be about commitment to unrequited love.

I'd love to hear more about some of the specific lyrics and see what people have to think about them, though.

Bon Iver – RE: Stacks Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the chorus refers to the scene described in the song "blindsided" earlier in the album that he keeps replaying over in his head painfully.

Bon Iver – Blindsided Lyrics 16 years ago
The scene he appears to be describing is him very reluctantly peering through a window into a room of his girlfriend cheating on him or something of the sort, and then how he is simultaneously disgusted with himself for looking, mad at her (through his recollection of the "would you really rush out" line), and feeling sorry for himself (blindsided) ALL while talking himself into the fact that he made the right decision.

Thats my take anyway, if I'm right then thats an awesome mixture of feelings he's described

Bon Iver – Lump Sum Lyrics 16 years ago
I definitely don't understand all the lines, but it seems to be about shedding off his ties to his present situation and putting then setting out into an unknown future for himself.

his ardor to leave overcomes his inner inertia, a lump sum of forces (or a net sum) that leads him to decide to leave after weighing all the options.

Sunset Rubdown – Us Ones in Between Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with everyone here trying not to pigeonhole the song. People on this site are too quick to attribute every song to be about a relationship or a breakup or something mundane like that.

Nonetheless, these are my thoughts as to what the song means to me. I think this song is about struggling with identity and who you are. The other person in this song ("you") is capable of love and destruction, just as the singer knows that he too is neither wholly good or wholly evil, although capable of both. The sun lines seem to back this view, as even the bright beautiful sun sinks its head into the earth at the end of the day, seemingly wondering about the goodness or correctness of its actions and its place in the universe.

But then again, who knows.

MGMT – Kids Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is awesome. I have no idea what the song means, unfortunately, but are the lyrics in the chorus definitely "control yourself," I always thought it sounded like "enjoy yourself." Same goes for "take only what you need from him" - is it not "take only what you need from me"? The lyrics are hard to understand at some points but such a great song regardless.
