bobfrombob is right, its from the perspective of a suicide bomber. He's dreaming of his vision of paradise, the place where he goes in his sleep but thinks that he can't get there in this world the way he's going now, he 'can't swim across that river so deep.' I mean i'm definitely wrong but the chorus makes much more sense as a threat from a terrorist than it does as a warning that the worlds about to end. |

When I see the video for this song I always think about Micheal Stipe sitting and writing this song while really pissed off. He means it to be completely sarcastic to hit back at people that labelled him as sombre and unhappy. Then he cheers up and comes back later adds a happy tune and gets a hit single. It also kinda reminds me of TV presenters especially on kids TV. They have to be unquestioningly happy and energetic all the time then during the break they smoke 20 fags and say the words to this song sarcastically under their breath. |

I think this song is about denial. He's denying that a broken relationship was more serious than it was. The way that he keeps repeating the word meaningless and the 'yes yes yes' part make it sound like he's trying to convince himself. and the lines, "and if some dim bulb should say we were in love in some way kick all his teeth in for me and if you feel like keeping on kicking feel free" are quite violent like he's trying to kick the meaning out of the relationship to save him from being too sad about the break up. |

The keep your paws of mine line is the best line in the song! The song is purposefully full of pop cliches so I don't know how you can pick that line out as bad when you have lines like "who said life was easy and who said a man was fair " and " When love falls from the sky nobody ever asks why " I mean he rymes sky and why for goodness sake! However because of this I think this is one of the best songs ever, Its like listening to a really classic pop song thats been around for 50 years. Except its much better than most old pop songs. |

This song is amazing. I have tried holding the last note and almost suffocated. I dont think Stephin Merritt could hold that note either which is why he got Dudley Klute to sing the song on the album. I especially like the lines, "I know Professor Blumen makes you feel like a woman but when the wind is in your hair you laugh like a little girl " He's a bit self-depriciative though. I mean I'm sure he wasn't that ugly.... |

ok its probably not about vampires but there should be more vampire related songs written I think. The melody and idea of this song is simple; someone not wanting to be tied down in a relationship, but its written so beautifully like most stephin merritt songs that I've never get sick of it. The arcade fire version is really easy to find. Just go to the KCRW website and find the arcade fire live performance where they played it along with some other magical music... |

It just annoys me that hardly anybody comments or has ever heard of Magnetic fields while every bright eyes song has about a hundred comments next to it. Stephin Merritt has been writing incredible pop songs like this for 15 years. How old is Conor Oburst anyway 12 or something. Uuurgh! Its cos he looks like an emo diva thats the thing. This song is about being away from home and on the road for some reason or another. The way the melody moves up and down reminds me of car sickness a little. |

I think most Arcade Fire songs on Funeral have something to do with death and grief. So I think this song is about a death in the family when the author was a kid; "Ice has covered up my parents hands." and "The powers out in the heart of man" give the idea of a heart attack and death of his parents. The adults try to hide the reality of death from the kids but that makes them angry. So he goes, "out to pick a fight with anyone." and says, "Cause nothin's hid, from us kids! You ain't foolin' nobody with the lights out!" It has more meanings as well though cos Arcade fire are a clever bunch. So the darkness is also a metaphor for the future because you never know whats going to happen and because the protaganist has no plans or dreams. He's afraid of carrying things on from his parents because he doesn't know what he's suppost to do without the light that they provided for him. The fantastic thing about this song is that it can be interprited in a completely different way like xx sunshine said and make complete sense. More sense than my version makes anyway :) |

This song carries on the idea of Neighborhoods from funeral except now the towns been boarded up and is being burned. I suppose that means its about things degenerating and that everything comes to an end. The lyrics "took a visit to your old house. the windows were all boarded up. try to hold the memory of the ocean in a paper cup. there is no future in this town. they barricade the buildings there. to the lion, you’ve been cast. only bones are gonna last." are about things ending and dying and trying to remember the good times but not being able to because the places you remeber are all delapidated. Its quite sad really - sounds great though, I hope they put this on the next album. |

Of course I was 5 at the time it was written so it would have been tricky for me. It could be about vampires I suppose - romantic, country singing, synth loving vampires though. | |

This song is unbelievable. It just sends me away back to when I was a kid - I don't know what but the sound just reminds me of something long ago. The lyrics are quite bitter about being dissappointed by someone who you thought had more to them than they do. |

I don't think the songs satirical about pop music because they played it on top of the pops and seemed pretty pleased about it. It's just about how there are so many songs that are all about the same thing - love - but it doesn't matter cos it's such a great thing to sing about. It's a celebration of that I think. |
