Some say this is absolutely an atheist song. It could be according to one's perspective. However the first written example of freewill is in the Bible, Genesis chapter 2 verse's 16&17 when God put Adam in the Garden and told him he can eat from any tree except the one in the middle. Adam & Eve still ended up eating from the tree in the middle of the Garden.
Thus, choices and decisions were made and acted out.
So in that sense it is a concept or ideal made by God, therefore it is religious.
Judaism (jewish) and Christianity did not come til later.

Since my childhood my small town on the mainland has gotten worse as it's gotten bigger. Old places we used to run around in the woods are housing and/or commercial and are gone. I miss those places and the innocence. Unfortunately that's the way it goes.
He doesn't really explain how "Cry for the land that was TAKEN AWAY". I'd like to see evidence of that.
Indigenous people claim land was taken away and I would give that to them, maybe on the condition that we can agree that 'pockets or parcels' of land. The Hawaiian's didn't own the whole of the islands, like mainland Indian's didn't own the whole of the US. How could somebody reasonably make that claim?

Out of personal experience here is the meaning of the song:
He was just out to get some and found a girl willing to give some
She was out to get love and found a guy she thought was willing to give it
They had a child and he being a responsible man thought he would have to marry her but didn't 'love' her. She had the baby and he left.
Being responsible but bitter he paid child support but didn't see the kid growing up (thinking she would use the child to make him hers)
Guilt caught up with him and he realizes the child is the real victim here and it's all her fault (but ultimately his too)
BTW The child turns out to be the biggest blessing in his life |
