"FYI!!! it's "cleverest blonde weekend" and its definately double dutch. they say so themselves in this interview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RU-viYyijzg"

Well, yeah, in that pig latin isn't a real language as such. But since it has a very definite decipherable meaning, it's not complete gibberish either is it? Any code/language is nonsense if you don't know what it means.

"LOVEY DOVEY SONG."

No. It really isn't.

"The message is conveyed in a gay story. It's about something that both parties know or feel but can't talk about or express, even though thats all they really want. And looking back in retrospect they wish they would have or that the other would have. "

Very well put.

I think this song is wonderful - I can't stop playing it (in fact, I may have to listen to it again RIGHT NOW!)

I suspected it might some sort of dialect/language I didn't know - what is pig latin? And what do the words actually translate as?

Other than those two lines, I pretty much agree with Fortunatus's interpretation. For myself, it reminds me of the experience my friends and I had a few years ago when we ran an indie society at uni, which held a club night - it was, invariably, the exact same set we did the last time round, but it was still fucking awsome! Ah, great times....

It's called 'Love and Poison':

It's very good!

I hadn't thought of this song as a cry for help before, but it certainly makes sense.

I always interpret the 'I got sould but I'm not a soldier' thing to mean either, a) I'm cool, but I don't have any political point to make or (which I think makes more sense), b) I may have style, but not very much resolve.

My boyfriend keeps teasing me about this song, joking that you might as well sing 'I got toes, but I'm not a toaster'. Witty, yes - but misses the point somewhat I think!

Incidentally, in case jumanji969 was referring to me specifically - my posts were meant as praise! I love the song and think we need more like it - my bias being entirely positive!

Oh - and 'Every park bench screams your name, I kept your tie' has got to be one of the most evocative lyrics I've ever heard. It says nothing, but somehow tells you everything you need to know.

This is an amazing song. I agree it doesn't HAVE to be seen as a gay song. But I find it difficult to view any other way. Perhaps I'm biased - what clinches it for me is the 'I would let you if you asked me' - surely a guy would only sing that line to another man, as it's almost universally the case that the woman is referred to in the passive by male singers? The song about East Berlin (from the same album) has a similar effect - it simply sounds far more like a gay experience than a straight one. But that's another discussion.

Anyways, it also reminded me of the film 'Get Real'.

It's really good - not entirely sure what it's about though. Would someone care to share your thoughts?

Just to say, the video to this song is one of my favourite music videos ever. The tude station setting captures the feeling of going out in London very well.

This is one of the few Suede songs I actively dislike - it's about Brett Anderson's then-girlfriend, for what it's worth.

Ash – Girl From Mars Lyrics 18 years ago
Brilliant song. Really, really great. The girl in question might as well be from mars because he doesn't know anything about her - all he has is the brief period described in the song, then she disappeared.

Ash – Renegade Cavalcade Lyrics 18 years ago
What everyone else said basically - about standing out in a croud. I love the allusion to Oscar Wilde as well

"We belong in the gutter dreaming
Sing along, at the stars we're screaming"

is a reference to the famous lines from Lady Windermere's Fan: "We are all in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars." This was also used as the tagline for the film of Wilde's life starring Stephen Fry; probably because it's such a great quote about standing out from the croud.

Suede – ...Morning Lyrics 18 years ago
I think that, to appreciate this song fully, it has to be heard as a sequel to "Untitled" which precedes it on the album. Basically, "Untitled" is a series of meaningless images, much like in a dream - this is the bit where you wake up and realise that you always have to face a new morning. Hope that makes sense. It works so much better as the single track, "Untitled ...Morning".

Suede – She's Not Dead Lyrics 18 years ago
Yeah, I read that too - that biography's great, isn't it?

I never thought of the song in the same way again after that. I love the image of death as "gone away to someone else's bed". Sends shivers up my spine!

Suede – Animal Nitrate Lyrics 18 years ago
I've always thought this was about a gay relationship between an older man and an under-age man gone bad. Amyl nitrate, "over 21" etc all point to this. I shouldn't have said it was about being raped by his dad though - that line could just as easily mean that his father suspects that he's gay and (being a Suede song) thinks it sordid.

Like all good songs though, this could mean anything to anyone and is, basically, about the more sordid aspects of working class life.
