Ambulance LTD – Straight A's Lyrics 13 years ago
andres430,

Excellent job transcribing the lyrics. They seem perfect to me.

The song seems to suggest that sometimes, the less you try, the better you'll do. Sometimes school can feel like that, and I'm also a bit skeptical about the difficulty of classes at DeVry. Suggesting that the girl is sexy (savvy) enough to attract a few "new-wave boys in courdoroys", he is at the same time praising her hidden genius.

Vampire Weekend – Run Lyrics 14 years ago
This song seems to me to be about the stunted realities that so many people are being forced into with the current economic conditions. Even if people are employed and may have "stable" jobs, most people "work to live" in jobs they don't like to the point that their growing careers end making them "live to work". The theme of "running" in the chorus and title seems to come from a dire need for freedom from the oppressive situations that we are placed in against our wills. As jfoxx mentioned above, the place he seems to be describing in the second verse seems to be Africa, "where a little bit of condensation means so much". While the idea of a more communal and simpler life away from "all those stars and bars" seems more beautiful to the vocalist, he also recognizes the lack of glamor inherent in this lifestyle, mentioning that "a little bit of change is all your little fingers touch". In other words, in the face of the cutthroat economic policies exercised by America and its largely white power structure, Ezra Koenig seems to be viewing life in Africa as a sort of escape. This less complicated life, based on more traditional and tribal values of family, sharing, and music appears to be "the only honest way to go". And while such a lifestyle (almost akin to communism or socialism in its abandonment of capitalist motivations) is often regarded as 'good in theory but not in practice', Koenig suggests that "we could try". With "you" (love), and "a battered radio" (music, no matter how rudimentary), life would again return to its most essential needs, without any of its unnecessary bullshit.

Why? – Good Friday Lyrics 15 years ago
Oh! I just got that! Cutting the punch line and it ain't no joke! He means a literal line for the punch bowl, but he's cutting the "punchline".

Piss.

Why? – Simeon's Dilemma Lyrics 15 years ago
I tried researching the name in the title. Yoni also references the name in Brook and Waxing: "...if some divine Simon spoke..."

The name Simeon on Wiki comes up with two biblical figures, one Old Testament and one New Testament. The one from the Old Testament, which I thought would be a more likely influence for Yoni, was fearless and ruthless. However, what I found interesting was that the Simeon in the New Testament shares his saint's day with Prophetess Anna; the name Anna shows up in at least two other songs on the album.

And, as with many other songs on the album, Yoni references going to hell. "Will I look better, or will I look the same rotting in hell?" is my favorite line in the song, possibly on the whole album. Maybe in his days of fretting over this girl, his sleepless nights, he has become stressed, haggard, ugly. It just hard to imagine rotting in hell as an improvement, but that's why the line is so beautiful.

The Rosebuds – Wildcat Lyrics 15 years ago
It's a complete story, certainly, but still very convoluted.

What little I can understand is that someone wants to run away. Perhaps the boy wants to "elope" with her, and she doesn't want to get her sister in trouble, because she'd be held responsible? So confusing.

A beautiful song. Very calming, kind of sad. Very visual too, especially the part about the two of them sitting under the carport light. Stunning.

Thom Yorke – Skip Divided Lyrics 15 years ago
The way I interpret this song:
He's at a party. The "situation" he keeps referring to is the social situation.
His love interest is at this party, and he doesn't know how to act. He wants to talk to her, to anyone, and yet he's unsure of how to carry himself. He needs a number and location, this is his way of knowing what to do. He heads into the French windows, he's standing next to the wall ("The wall keeps telling me you are a fool for sticking 'round").
Perhaps mixed signals? The whole time he wants his number and location, his way to behave, he wants his love interest to "guide me in, can you smother me?"

Bloc Party – Luno Lyrics 16 years ago
The first time I heard this song and looked at the title I thought it could be about a werewolf.

The bleeding nose along with the shaving your legs line, and the title "Luno" kind of references the moon.

Yeah. Fuckin' werewolves.

Weezer – American Gigolo (Demo) Lyrics 16 years ago
Perhaps a nod to the Richard Gere movie of the same name?
In the movie Julian Kaye (Gere) kind of wants everybody up out of his business (male prostitution) as well. Was Rivers celibate at this point, or was he still banging groupies, because if so this song could be in the same vein as "Tired Of Sex".

Kings of Leon – Genius Lyrics 17 years ago
This is my favorite Kings of Leon song. It's a pretty simple message I think, but for a while I didn't understand the line "you're gettin' your information from the grocery check-out line". Now I realize he's referring to people reading the tabloids on the racks when they're waiting in the check-out line. Obviously this isn't literal (or at least I don't think they were that popular during their 1st album).

I love this song so much. Whenever I'm mad I throw it on. It's good like that.

Also on a more interesting side-note:
I think the "I can't get alone in my bathroom, I need to give myself a hand" lyric is referencing him trying to masturbate but being unable to due to certain assholes bugging him while he's in there. This thought only occurred to me when I watched on YouTube "Genius" live in Britain, when he made a lude gesture while singing that lyric. EXCELLENT!

Blur – Chinese Bombs Lyrics 17 years ago
a) This song is great. I always imagined a Bruce Lee fighting sequence when I listened to this song.

b) I'm pretty sure that it's not "Where people are strong" at the end of the 1st verse. I think it's "Where justice is done."

c) You entirely missed the "Where justice is done." line in the second verse.

Blur – Swamp Song Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a song that you'd listen to after just getting a heroin fix. Definitely. Gimme everything probably means that that's what his drug has become to him. When he gets the taste he doesn't need anything else.

It's awesome, because if you turn this song up really loud you can hear someone (Damon?) breathing in and out before the music fades in. Also, his first line is "sound check" which is cool, I guess.

OutKast – The Way You Move Lyrics 17 years ago
"Ready for action, nip it in the bud
We never relaxin’, OutKast is everlastin’
Not clashin’, not at all but see my nigga went to do a little acting.
Now that’s for anyone askin’..."

I'm pretty sure this is a reference to all the people who thought outkast were going to split up because they made two seperate albums.

Kings of Leon – McFearless Lyrics 17 years ago
Some of the lyrics make me think that everyone around him is putting a ton of pressure on him and watching his every move and trying to keep him down, but no matter how much they screw him over he's going to do what he's destined to do just so he can prove them wrong. Just by showing up and doing this deed, this show, he'll get his revenge.

Kings of Leon – Camaro Lyrics 17 years ago
Not exactly a 'deep' song, but it's cool. Yes, sadly I think of a guy with a leather jacket and a mullet on a motorcycle. It's so so so wrong.

This song reminds me of a story my friend told me. He was stopped in his car at a red light, when a girl pulled up in the lane next to him. They were both wearing sunglasses. They smiled at eachother, and when the light turned green they started to race.

I want every day of my life to be like that.

Kings of Leon – True Love Way Lyrics 17 years ago
I think that this song could be about the same girl he wrote "Happy Alone" about. Maybe she 'killed him' once, and he 're-discovered' her in a sense, but he's worried that she might break his heart again. This is the only (?) time he's referenced the title of another song, so I think it might be a reference to that girl. It's all about his visions for their future together, though he knows it probably won't happen and he's worried about heartbreak.

As for the babies walking this town, I dunno. Could be a reference to future generations (not literally their children) in the same situations that they were in when they were younger?

Kings of Leon – My Party Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is already brilliant, but if it's about HER, then it's just too good to be true.

I get the general impression that...Rachel Bilson is a bitch (or just was to Caleb?). I dig it a lot, though, because sometimes there are those times where friends of friends are invited to your parties, and you despise them. This is my new favorite song, I believe. Ah yes.

Beck – Girl Lyrics 17 years ago
It's meant to be ambiguous. That's why the lyrics in the album just have the '...' in the place of that word (or words). The song makes sense with sun-eyed, summer, and cyanide.

The atari beat in the beginning is by far the greatest thing anyone has ever heard of. Yes.

Kings of Leon – Spiral Staircase Lyrics 17 years ago
nexusicon, may I just say...spectacular input. now it all makes sense. The one thing that still bugs me about this, however, is the fact that they all say something slurred and inaudible near the end of the song. I can't help but feel like it's something cryptic and/or insightful and we're all just missing out on it!

Kings of Leon – Wasted Time Lyrics 17 years ago
I disagree somewhat. What I get from this song is that it's about a girl who's kind of a heartbreaker and runs around shaking her "apples" for everyone and whispers false promises of sex to all the guys. He's telling her that her time on him is wasted because he knows all of her tricks and games. He's telling her not to even bother...

Sufjan Stevens – The Seer's Tower Lyrics 18 years ago
It's definitely about mother earth and father sky...the matriarchal religions of the old times used to worship the earth more, and we've gradually turned to where now the majority of religions worship a "father sky" type of figure.

Oh my mother, she betrayed us, but my father loved and bathed us.

The "us" Sufjan is referring to in these lines. Is he talking simply about him and his siblings, or about the human race as a whole?

Sufjan Stevens – The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us! Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't know if this stuff has been mentioned already, and if not I just kinda wanted to add some to material to some of the ideas and arguments I've read.
This song is partially about a conflicting battle between Shadow and Persona. In Jungian psychology it's said that everyone has a shadow and a persona. A yin and yang, if you will. The line "the day we were born"...yeah, it would have to have been some special friend if they were born on the same day, and as far as I know Sufjan doesn't have a twin brother. Also, his friend "ran away" which means that in his childhood (when people are naive) he couldn't decide who he was going to be but when he hit puberty or what have you his best friend ran away.

Also on the subject of a gay relationship...kids, lets all agree that whether this song's lyrics encompass a gay relationship that this is a damned good song.
But, there are the lines "touching his back with my hand I kiss him..." which anyone can hear and shout "gay", but to bring the ever popular Freud in on this, the line "deep in the tower, the prairies below".
....I'll let that sink in a little bit. But I believe that deep in the tower is a falic symbol and the prairies below is an anal symbol. Yeah. That's all the new stuff I have to say.

Also it was said that Abraham was abused...physically...by Mary Todd because she was kind of crazy to begin with.
