This song is amazing. So... profound.
It's so sad, but so beautiful. I think it's all about climbing the tree of your love and your life, and seeing the world, and then having to hold on because the wind is shaking you... but no matter what, the house you build can still disappear. Love lost. So sad. |

I think it's about the struggle over letting someone you love do what they really want, and wanting them to stay with you... do you let them go because you love them? or do you keep them because you love them?
I think she gets sarcastic when she gets to the cake part, which I think is a really funny pair of lines, but I think she really decides to let go when she gets to "If you want better things, then I want you to have them" despite being hurt that she isn't good enough. |

laluz33 - and I don't agree about Stephen's fears of dogs and thunder, because the song is definitely about wondering why dogs run when it thunders... why else would the chorus talk about what dogs hear? |

laluz33 - I think it's about a dog, because they "dug a hole in fall" but "she's gone just before the new year" (a few months apart) so they probably knew the dog would have to be put down in the near future.
However, I don't think it necessarily has to be a dog because of the chorus, since dogs run and hide when it thunders, I think it's just an interesting reflection on something that happens. Maybe her mind just wanders. |
