Ray LaMontagne – Jolene Lyrics 17 years ago
I just heard this song for the first time. It is a beautiful song, but i feel like i must clarify something here. Spokane is actually pronounced like Spo-can, instead of the way Ray sings it here when he rhymes it with "rain." That's just something that tends to get on my nerves after the hundredth time my hometown is mispronounced.

Rocky Votolato – Makers Lyrics 18 years ago
i feel like this is about suicide. it seems like the narrator's friend killed himself, and now the narrator is remembering how they used to talk about how death would be nice, to be free from all the misery of life, but it seems like the narrator realizes that life has good to it as well, and he's regretting that he didn't help his friend see that before it was too late. but he also seems to be at peace with his friend's death, like he knows that death really is what his friend wanted.

Rocky Votolato – Goldfield Lyrics 18 years ago
this is such a beautiful song...
i think the meaning is kind of obvious. i imagine goldfield as one of those tiny, old, depressing towns in which everyone is poor and struggling because there are no jobs to be had. it's an "old mining town" past its hayday. the only way to find a better life is to get out of the town.

and i guess the irony that's "laying thick on the ground" is that the town of Goldfield has no gold, metaphorical or literal.

The Decemberists – On the Bus Mall Lyrics 18 years ago
So this is about two boys who ran away from home and now they've become prostitutes for money, and all they have is each other in the world... they're either in love or it's just a brotherly, familial love they feel. either way, it doesn't matter, i guess. but this one line is still confusing me:
"i will not mourne for you."
what exactly is he saying? i will not mourne for you if i lose you? that doesn't seem right, because they love each other... they're fused like family. is he saying i won't mourne for you for becoming a prostitute, because i'm with you and we're having fun? hmmm, any insight would be appreciated...

The Decemberists – We Both Go Down Together Lyrics 18 years ago
Does anyone find it kind of funny that the title of this song could be misconstrued and one could assume it was about 69ing?

haha.

Matt Nathanson – Suspended Lyrics 18 years ago
"all i want to be is the minute that you hold me in, and you pretend that i'm all that you waited for."

it may not be a perfect relationship, they may not be perfect for each other, but they can pretend because the sex is damn good.

"spent all of my life emptied of anthems
and bracing for something that never did come"

he's saying he spent his life searching for true love, but he never found it, so right now he can just settle for damn good sex.

Dispatch – Lightning Lyrics 18 years ago
I think you guys have it pretty much right on, good thinking. trippinbtm, Washington Square is a park in New York City. It's actually the park that the NYU campus surrounds, and I know one of the guys in Dispatch went to NYU (from that voice clip about the hockey team in Gut The Van... anyway...) NYC has always been the most disgusting, materialistic city to me, and I think biscuits4's interpretation of the song goes right along with the image of NYC in my mind.
