Underworld – Moaner Lyrics | 14 years ago |
'moaner' always struck me as a particularly angst-ridden song - the crushing feelings of devastation, hurt and anger that consume you when you discover a lover's passed you up for somebody better. you can try and run away from it - escape into the bright lights of the city "down on the waterfront", drop pills, drink until you pass out: but in the end, they just won't get out of your head. "make it down to the delaware and up in your head - moaner, moaner, moaner, moaner!" you're uncertain, "crossway boy" and hating yourself and hating them for what's happened. seeing them without you, in the company of someone else just breaks you: "long walks with the boyfriend and the city loves her boyfriend" is so bitter and hateful. it's the worst kind of pain. the way the song builds up and completely collapses in on itself (almost reminiscent of an emotional breakdown?) as the lyrics progress is a fucking beautiful thing to experience with the speakers turned up as loud as you can stand. so intense. tracks like these make me wonder why people often assume dance music is just beeps and beats - fuck, no. karl hyde is almost undoubtedly one of the most skilful, original lyricists dance music has ever seen. |
Massive Attack – Atlas Air Lyrics | 14 years ago |
ha. i am exactly the same. the first time i heard this song, the only lyric in the song i could make out was "in the sunset make glowing twins". guess what my mind jumped to. |
Goldfrapp – Happiness Lyrics | 16 years ago |
my mind also jumped straight to cults, in particular scientology, and how they're, well, full of shit. i love this song, it's one of the best off seventh tree! ah, the irony of having such a hippy-skippy, happy song with ironic lyrics like these. . . heh. |
Massive Attack – Karmacoma Lyrics | 16 years ago |
i don't this song's supposed to have any underlying meaning, really - d has mentioned in interviews that he and tricky wrote this track while totally high, backstage at a music festival. but that's part of it's charm, it's so laid-back and almost whimsical ("walking through the suburbs, though not exactly lovers") and tricky and 3d have very sexy voices, yes? also, the 'napoli trip' remix of this, fucking great. totally worth it just to hear d murmuring a few lines in napoletana :) |
UNKLE – Unreal Lyrics | 16 years ago |
so, so very good. for me, this song conjures up all these terrifying, sad, post-apocalyptic images - i don't know why? there's just something so remotely, starkly beautiful about this song, and the "maybe i can help you?" at the start makes it seem strangely ironic. yep. one of the highlights from 'psyence fiction', why the hell did the critics pan this album? are they all deaf!? |
Scooter – Aiii Shot The Dj Lyrics | 16 years ago |
oh man. scooter are so incredibly awful (come on! the lyrics!!), yet there's something about them that's just so fun to listen to. . . |
Massive Attack – Inertia Creeps Lyrics | 16 years ago |
'back / she comes' (on the singles 90-98 collection) is basically this, with even more sexiness (it seems an impossible feat, but believe me!). del naja's lyrics are both original and insanely erotic, and his voice, just-- oh, that man is a god. |
Massive Attack – Antistar Lyrics | 16 years ago |
one of those toxic yet utterly addictive relationships one can't help but stay in. 'antistar', to me, is about a dysfunctional, all-consuming romance - the singer is addicted to the other ("can you make it numb? / and kill the pain like cortisole") in spite of the ultimately destructive nature of their relationship (hence "iconography / fucks with me / you look great in bloodstains"). mostly i just adore the strings and the beats in this song - sweeping, anguished, a perfect closing track for '100th window'. |
Public Image Limited – Seattle Lyrics | 16 years ago |
the lyrics seem to contradict this, but this song makes me feel so happy, especially in the early mornings - i think it's the lively background, the happy beat, and the weird association i have with the ocean. yup. "secret signs and knowing looks" is awesome. |
Portishead – It Could Be Sweet Lyrics | 16 years ago |
gentle and fragile, this song is. beth's voice is like a dream, a sweet dream. |
Massive Attack – Butterfly Caught Lyrics | 16 years ago |
i agree with ntt's sentiment, that this song is about seizing the moment. to me, anyway, 'butterfly caught' serves as a reminder that every moment is precious. "under your lips, under your lips - shh, under your feet" in particular, that kills me - we spend so much time chasing after meaning or whatever in our lives that we miss the small things, glimmering "under our feet". and the imagery in the lyrics, not to mention the beautiful background music - ohh. definitely a highlight from '100th window'. |
Goldfrapp – Little Death Lyrics | 16 years ago |
la petit mort. no further explanation needed? *smiles* "black satin tears rule the night", that's such a nice lyric. |
UNKLE – Invasion Lyrics | 16 years ago |
knowing del naja - it seems to be about war, about power and being able to use it to assault something much smaller, weaker than you. the current situation in iraq in particular - 'invasion' is really ambiguous and oblique, but the lines "sacrificial, made for t.v.", and "are you all that / you're cracked up to be?" seem indicative of a critical view on america and britain's involvement in the situation. and because d, along with damon albarn, is quite notoriously anti-war on iraq, well. i don't know, i feel like i'm talking out of my arse anyway :| |
Goldfrapp – Black Cherry Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It might just be me, but the line "all the world in one grain of sand, and I've blown it" seems like a reference to the poem "Auguries of Innocence" by William Blake (To see the world in a grain of sand). It's a great song. :D |
Massive Attack – Small Time Shot Away Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Yeah. . . so I just realised it might help if I actualy posted the right lyrics. *headdesk* Took her in Dropped a line Turned me on (I travel, I travel) We never leave each other 'cause we leave each other so cold It makes it melt away The easy part is taking yourself in It's wartime everytime Shot away Wipe the smile from your face It's getting in the way It's wartime everytime She cut me a line and she turned me on She made it cool You couldn't do it if you wanted to It's wartime everytime Small talk everytime It's my favourite chloroform It's pill talk everytime Get it out the way Friction wound Shot away Ricochet We're like identical twins Sucking on the same teat Spitting out the same things It's wartime everytime Small talk everytime Its my favourite choloroform It's pill talk everytime Get it out the way Friction wound Ricochet Line them up, and knock 'em down Shot away |
Goldfrapp – Hairy Trees Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Hahaha. Fuzzyweapon, a friend of mine thought the exact same thing when I told them they ~had~ to listen to this song. Goldfrapp owns. There is no doubt. |
Goldfrapp – White Soft Rope Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Why does this song not have more comments than this!? It's so. . . pretty. . . |

Massive Attack – Small Time Shot Away Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Sorry to say this, but many of these lyrics are wrong -they're all in the album booklet. Awesome song, but. |
