Cardi B – WAP Lyrics 2 years ago
Does anyone really need help with the meaning of this? WAP's been running this world for a long time. Women have always had a high level of empowerment and control over the "dumb sticks". That's just the way it is.

James Taylor – The Water Is Wide Lyrics 9 years ago
I believe this song is suggesting that "distance makes the heart grow fonder" is a myth. That over time love fades away. I believe the singer is in another land awaiting the promised arrival of his/her sweetheart.

The singer suggests they fear the distance between them will cause a loss of feeling on the part of their love and wishes for a boat to cross the water and be reunited.

Guy said he was in a pub and observed two addicts that were entwined, presumably through their addiction. The woman was wearing a powder blue coloured dress.

Seems spot on. Political references had been present in earlier compositions, however. This piece was much more overt.

Peter Gabriel – Here Comes The Flood Lyrics 13 years ago
From the book "Peter Gabriel - in his own words" published by Omnibus Press:

"I was referring to a mental flood, actually. You know, a release, a wash over the mind, not necessarily the land. A downhill course which leads to a disaster - an opening up, a telepathic society where people can read each others' minds. Of course, in such a situation there'd be no real change for people who have been honest and open with whatever's in their minds, but those who have been rather two-faced and who have kept their thoughts hidden would find it very difficult."

Very similar to what DexX found in the Armando Gallo publication. For those who love the lyrical genious of PG you should check out a band from Manchester, England called Elbow. You can thank me later :-)

If you listen to formally trained vocalists singing non-secular vocal works you will hear that this is the pronunciation used. It sounds like "lawd" rather than "Lord."

This is correct. Sting describes this as the meaning before performing the song in concert.

Elbow – One Day Like This Lyrics 14 years ago
Like most of Elbow's work a simple, beautifully arranged & produced tune driven by Guy Garvey's poetic lyrics. I could be off, but I think the lyrics in this tune are more direct than most of Guy's work.

1st verse - awakening in a sunlit room the morning after a heavy drunk.

2nd verse - we went at it like animals last night and said words you wouldn't read in the bible... oh, well.

3rd verse - it's morning and I'm ready to go again... what started as a "one nighter" is still developing
and the passion is intense.

4th verse - you're even more beautiful than I'd realized and I'm diggin' it!

5th verse - I'm thinking long term (flash forward)... about growing old together. I pass gas, you
figured it out and I wink to confirm it. More gas passes and you smile. Thin lips referring
to advanced aging.

The remainder of the song deals with the intense feelings of thinking of a future with someone he's just met and how awkward it would be this early in the relationship to discuss such things.

That's my read on it!

A tune nicely done over about six chords... but lovely nonetheless!

I've always felt that this album deserved to be credited as the first "concept album."

Does anyone know of an earlier released "concept album?" (November 1967)

Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here Lyrics 14 years ago
Think of it as "trade offs." To progress, the openness of a green field must give way to the steel rail.

There is an expression in English: "thinly veiled smile." It refers to a smile that is not genuine or sincere.

I hope this helps!

As some have suggested, as an art form, what a song means to its creator may not match the interpretation of the listener. It is what you want or need it to be, as each piece of art is interpreted through the lens or mind of the observer.

In short, I think it's about the trade-offs made as we grow older; to girlfriends or spouses, employers, our dreams, etc. How much of ourselves we're willing to give up during life's negotiations.

It's great to read interpretations of progressive lyrics (Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Genesis, Elbow, etc.). Some were/are so good at the turn of a phrase.

So many personal interpretations here! Thanks to all for sharing!

Peter Gabriel – Solsbury Hill Lyrics 14 years ago
Wow... It's hard to believe someone could be so wrong.

Gabriel, a founding member of Genesis, made the choice on his own, though Tony Banks (a friend and 1st partner to Gabriel from their school days) was aware of the weighty decision Gabriel was making and pushed for a "are you in or are you out" decision.

In his subtle British way, Collins was "chomping at the bit" to get Gabriel out of the way as his actions with the band (from the day he auditioned and thereafter) demonstrated a calculating precision and strategy that supports my comments.

Gabriel generally wrote most all of the lyrics as his greatest talent has always been a masterful use of language and wordsmithing to create incredible imagery.

I used to begrudge Collins for his arrogant, passive aggressive influence on the evolution of the band, but then came to realize that the split created two enjoyable bodies of work. Fortunate for all of us that the talents of Banks and Rutherford remained a vehicle for the conniving Collins.

Get a clue...

Pink Floyd – Comfortably Numb Lyrics 15 years ago
I'd like to offer that without consideration for direct interviews of the lyricist (that are available), it would be near impossible to discern or determine meaning.

As has been noted, music is an artistic pursuit, and as such, should be interpreted in anyway the individual chooses.

The song appears, like many, to be a collage of events in the artist's life represented in verbally driven imagery.

Elbow – Weather To Fly Lyrics 15 years ago
I first heard Elbow's music whilst making the long commute home from work late one evening in 2006. I believe it was playing on a college station here on the east coast of the U.S.A.

I've always been a huge Peter Gabriel fan, so Guy's voice had an immediate appeal and his lyric writing style has such a poetic sensibility that I was immediately hooked.

I played the music for my son, who was ten at the time, and he picked it up as a favorite too.

Most of my friends are musicians, who also took to it. It's so difficult to find music that is enjoyable to listen to, makes you think and seems enduring these days. I look forward to each new offering!

Elbow – Powder Blue Lyrics 18 years ago
Oh... In response to tinfolsally's remarks about the "harmonica noises." I believe the instrument is actually a "melodica." Reference:

This intrument was brought to the forefront of popular music in the eighties by a Philadelphia based band known as "The Hooters."

Elbow – Powder Blue Lyrics 18 years ago
The song is so clearly about two drug addicted lovers that a car crash never entered my mind. "Powder Blue" could be a reference to the appearance of an addicts' skin tone or a name given to the "blend" produced by their drug dealer (just as those who deal in mushroom strains like name their final product). "You never get so close to death,
Makes you so alive" is likely to do with the unknown quality and origin of "street" drugs. As the affect of the drug begins to manifest, where it will take you is unknown. If "cut" with poison, you die. If high quality, you fly. I prefer adrenaline myself ;-)

Elbow – Fugitive Motel Lyrics 18 years ago
Hmm... of course music is an art form so it always means something different to everyone. My mental picture was along the lines of what was read and contributed by cazzdevil. The "dustbowl" is a U.S. historic/geographical reference to the central plains circa 1930. "Not 'til can read by the moon" would seem to imply "laying low" for a period of time (until the lunar cycle reaches a full moon perhaps?). "Cigarette holes for every lost soul" referring to "killing time" during the wait. "To give up the ghost in this place", meeting with an ill-fated demise. "Give me strength, give me wings".. I hope I can hold out and that I go to heaven if I don't. I don't know if it was intentional, but the music has a carnival like "lilt" to it as well. Carnies always travel extensively, no doubt frequenting such motels. IMHO
