The Mars Volta – Desperate Graves Lyrics 15 years ago
I like your idea, but have to politely disagree. I don't think this song is meant to be a simple personification. Plus, its not just misery that is being shown. "When I breathe, the heaven's can't hold me and I can't believe anymore." That line alone critiques religion, offers doubt, and also offers power. Plus, the notion of being the matchstick that you'll never lose isn't meant to be misery to me as much as it a lingering threat; a symbol of permanant danger/control over someone/thing. I can't offer my own FULL interpretation yet cause I'm trying to figure out a few things about the album as a whole. I like the idea though, eternal, but I refuse to believe this song is a simple anything :-)

Bayside – Carry On Lyrics 15 years ago
For the record, this song, as well as basically this ENTIRE ALBUM is about Anthony's failed marriage. He married an ex-porn star (I forget which one, but you can find the info if you search) and she slept around. He caught her and found out about it. While admitting many times on this album that he's a wreck too, he obviously hates her more for ruining her life. This is literally the subject matter of almost each song, as well as the album name "The Walking Wounded."

The Sound of Animals Fighting – Horses In The Sky Lyrics 16 years ago
Craig Owens sucks and so does Chiodos. He is good in this song, but I guarantee that Anthony and/or Matt did most of the lyrical structure and words. Plus, him doing it live is miserable, his backups to Anthony are off and his lead is even worse.

The words above in the chorus are wrong, for sure. It does sound like "Something disorient sentence" or "Something disorient senses." In any instance, if you listen, watch the dvd and/or listen to the live version in the re-release, you'll see its not as written above.

In the background, it is WITHOUT A DOUBT Matt Embree. I have seen the RxB live 9 times in the last 2 years, met them many times, and own all their cds since their release years. I agree with the comment someone made about Matt being the best singer of them all but doing the least singing. He BLOWS both singers out of the water, because even though I love Anthony, he's very on or off live, whereas Matt is a fucking God. Just see them live and you will need to see them over and over. Also, although I'm sure in reality that I had NOTHING to do with it, I am going to take full credit because that's what hardcore fans do: In a conversation I had with Matt very shortly after the 1st TSOAF cd, I told him he NEEDS to sing on the next one. He replied as follows, "Naaah man...well maybe...okay, I will." So, yay me! :-)

As far as the meaning, this album as a whole is a critique of religion and this song is OBVIOUS in its doing so. "We made her robed to live within her walls" We created an idol, and blessed her just so we could end up in heaven. I WISH I knew the chorus's exact lyrics to intepret, but either way it seems to be about viewing a God as something other than one, whether we are "disorienting senses" or wishing for a change.

Sorry for the rant, peace out all.

Saves the Day – Kaleidoscope Lyrics 16 years ago
I think these lyrics are rather incorrect:
"No letter left inside the drawer"
"The look I saw come on your face is frozen there each time I blink."
"So I'll give in to the pain and let it eat me from within"

I'm also pretty sure the lyric above "I stare through the window waiting" is incorrect, it sounds like "through the window into x" but I cannot decipher the x.

Hope that all helps. Peace.

Saves the Day – When I'm Not There Lyrics 16 years ago
this whole album is about a break-up dealy. chris is in the middle of a 3 album process that is supposed to deal with a central character reflecting inwards upon himself and dealing with heartbreak/loss etc. the trilogy began with "sound the alarm," continued onto "under the boards" and will end with the next album. personally, i think its stupid, seeing how ALL of his songs and albums are about this same topic. why write a trilogy to explore the same idea you've been exploring since your very first set of demos.

also, shutup matthew.

Circa Survive – The Greatest Lie Lyrics 17 years ago
Listen, I don't mean to sound like an ass, but its amazing to me that no one has the correct lyrics up when they're ON the bands website:

The greatest lie

This building smelled so familiar
And I had thought the sense was lost
And in a day dream I imagined my house
where all my father’s sense of strength was lost
And it’s all we have So find me a place to begin.
If I could get this feeling to end
Trembling idle hands, holding me there.
We laugh in the face of love because nobody’s really there.
Nobody’s real.
Desire I would try it either way,
and we believe in something invisible,
the sense of smell that you use all your life
(well now you know your father lied)
I could never find my way without you,
but you’re already there.
We’ve come a long long way without maps in our hands.
It’s all we have.

Lots were close, none were perfect. In any instance, as far as interpretation, this is a very religious album which I thought was funny considering how sac-religious the sound of animals fighting albums were.

The Sound of Animals Fighting – Act II: All is Ash or the Light that Shines Through it Lyrics 17 years ago
Okay, I don't want to insult anyone on here because we're all trying real fucking hard to figure this out, but I think there are definantely mistakes here. I read the lyrics while listening to the song and think a few things are off. Plus, I watched the live DVD a bunch of times, which helps provide some clarity. Below are the places I think are wrong, and my suggestions whenever I have them. A lot of parts I just think are wrong here but don't know what is right.

The opening line: "This box is lovely that I'm in" (In the story written in The Tiger and The Duke, its explained that a prisoner is locked in a box) and I think the final line of the opening part is "THere's no room left to grow"

Next, "You magnify the evidence." And it's def. not "correlates the angles." I think its "[unknown] reads the angles" either way, definantely not correlates.

I think the chorus is as follows:
"We'll take back.
It's time for relief.
It's so hard leaving you here."
(This part I am not sure of, but story wise, it relates to the sons overthrowing Noah who was leading them. This is part of the Tiger and the Duke story again.)

Next, and this line im 99.9999% sure of because I heard it on CD and then it was rather clear on the DVD.
"Flesh is heretic
My body is a witch
I am burning it
I can afford this switch"

The part that is written above:
"For if I leave your empty smile explode into four
And on the last I will for our eyes, one by one "
is way way off. In fact, a close listening, and live listening lead me to believe that this is entirely wrong. I haven't picked up on much of it but two lines I know are there. First, it's not "explode into four" but "This wall is too far" and near the end I think he says something along the liens of "We're all led by you before God" [on the DVD he definantely says before God, not as sure on album] I am not sure entirely, but i am positive that he says "led by you" in the final line of this part.

Lastly, the part that says: "You're focused in the reason why I'm far beneath the answer You're acting like a separation" I think the only correct line is "You're acting like a seperation" but I am not positive on that either. In any instance, the first line of this part sounds a bit like "Your forfeit stained the reason why" but I am not positive. Also, the line "I'm far beneath the answer" is definantely wrong. I know he says something ending with "the answer" but it's not whats listed here.

Anyways, I am making guesses like the rest of us have done so far. But I have read the story of The Tiger and the Duke a few times again, and listened very closely multiple times to both the album and DVD. I wish someone could just meet Anthony and have him write down the lyrics. Geez.

Brand New – Handcuffs Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah, this song does reveal a very dark aspect of the God/Devil debate. But quite frankly, i think there are many clues relating this debate to another person. Be it female or male, it's too obvious that Jesse/Vinny has included someone else IN the activities they wish to partake in (thus the constant "YOU") I dont think its meant to be spiritual, as if the YOU is god OR the devil, but rather an exploration of the devil/god debate THROUGH maybe a relationship (again, not saying girl per say, could be friendship)

Also, I love Brand New's last two albums, and I know i'll get REAMED by all you guys for saying this, but Jesse isn't a nice guy. He's actually conceited and kind've a dick. I am from LI (as I'm sure some of you are) and know plenty of people who know him and have known him. Also, he's not really a good singer at all. BUT he knows how to write music that works with his vocal strengths. If you listen to the album, you'll notice Jesse sings in a very simple range for most of it, and when he DOES stray, there's layers upon layers of him over himself. He can't really sing in tune, and so to make it more full (after tuning the notes in the studio which weakens their value) he sings so many layers. Again, I know you'll all go FUCK OFF AUTODAFE and shit but whatever. Just one man's opinion. I am NOT TRYING TO TAKE ANYTHING AWAY FROM BRAND NEW OR JESSE. The Mars Volta are stuck up and pretentious and they're my favorite band. Brand new's last two albums are gold, mainly because Jesse knows what he's capable of and he doesnt try to force himself into other things.

The Mars Volta – Tetragrammaton Lyrics 17 years ago
I think Tuvia hit the interpretation right on the nail. This song was inspired by a crucifiction of a nun who heard voices. I think its incredible how Cedric writes his lines, because they are purely poetic in the same way that things like "Paradise Lost" are. There is not a single person in music who can write as well as him. The title of this album "Amputecture" came from Jeremy Michael Ward, their old sound guy who died, and its a mix of Amputate (to remove/break down) and Architecture (to create/build) and each song does JUST that with organized religion. It builds the scene, the setting, the information about religion and beliefs, and then shows their destructive, dark side. I understand the end as the part when the priest would go to find the body and realize that his rituals had not "cured" her but in fact revealed her to be Christian and at the same time evil. Thus that dual aspect of being in existence while being broken down.

It will be impossibel to nail EVERY line and their meanings, but everyone here did a really solid job. Its amazing to know that people take as much to be active listeners of both music AND lyrics since people liek Omar and Cedric take the time to be active writers.

Also, inpraiseoffolly, what I'm curious to know is what type of music you listen to. Cause to have heard two of the three TMV albums, but say they suck, either means your an ignoramus, or you don't like this style of music. IF you like Prog Rock, there is too much done well by TMV to think they "suck" and if you don't like Prog Rock, why the hell are you listening to them? And as far as these lyrics, you find me ONE person who writes with the same depth and genius, and then open your mouth. k?

Brand New – Sowing Season (Yeah) Lyrics 17 years ago
to the kid whose calling the person who posted the lyrics that are closest to true a douche, seriously man, what's your problem? he couldn't just add i na comment all the "proper" lyrics, because the other version of "sowing season" has like 150 comments. so should we dig through them? who cares if there are two of each song? is it ruining the website or wasting your time.

as far as the lyrics being proper, it doesn't sound like some things match what's being said. but jesse also isn't the greatest singer, and that could change his diction at points.

regardless, this song is a great opener, and a good single too, considering that it's poppy but has a more original feel to it than most generic shit out there. jesse did a great job of writing an album that works to his strengths, both vocally and lyrically.

Fear Before – Taking Cassandra to the End of the World Party Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah, I just wanted to say that tkilljoy is dead on with the meaning of this song. Using the mythological figure Cassandra, they were able to build a song that shows her predicting the future, but being hated for it, having no one believe her. Coincidentally, the song could be taken in modern times with destruction and all that, but in Ancient Greek times, the same shit existed. Really, you can place the "destruction, ignorance, and hatred" themes at any time in history, and they would easily fit in. We may just look at it as a modern equivalent since we, you know, live now...and not back then.
