Joanna Newsom – No Provenance Lyrics | 11 years ago |
My thought for the "big return" is that it might be referring to Nietzsche |
Samamidon – Saro Lyrics | 13 years ago |
"Fine hand" But yeah, amazing song. |
CocoRosie – By Your Side Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I don't feel like it's glorifying this kind of character at all but calling it satirical has some kind of humorous connotation and this song strikes me as being quite sad and hopeless rather than anything like that |
Joanna Newsom – Have One On Me Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Okay, I'm really intrigued by the comments here, but one feeling I really get from this song, despite it being totally historically untrue, is that the king poisons Lola with a drink. To me, that makes the whole song make more sense, and solidifies why Joanna Newsom would choose "Have One on Me" as a title of the album and song. There are lots of themes of disappointment and lost love in this album, almost betrayal, and nothing exemplifies that more than (seemingly kindly) offering a drink to somebody, that is actually poisoned. It also does wonders with the toast, in my opinion. She also says "I died" explicitly at one point. Of course there's a strong possibility that I am utterly wrong. Just saying. |
Joanna Newsom – Have One On Me Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Wow, I had no idea this was at all based on a real person. I'm reading up on her now, thanks |
Joanna Newsom – Go Long Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Outrageously beautiful, and yes I have a feeling it may be written about Smog as well. |
Joanna Newsom – '81 Lyrics | 14 years ago |
The booklet for the album reveals some interesting changes: "Tell me, what is meant by sin, or none," and "in the year of A.D. 1" being chief among them. That's some very interesting wordplay there. |
Joanna Newsom – Flying a Kite Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I completely disagree with any interpretation that this song is about drugs. I could see it maybe being about unrequited love or a general loss of innocence, but I think saying this is about drugs is misinterpreting it and inserting things into it that aren't there. |
The Tiny – In Reality Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Oh also, "buried dreams imprisoned with someone" |
The Tiny – In Reality Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I'm pretty sure the area you have as an underscore is "so, what the hell?" |
Joanna Newsom – Peach, Plum, Pear Lyrics | 14 years ago |
The idea of the song to me is that she sees someone she likes at the store, but he doesn't like her back and she's criticizing herself and explaining her emotions. At the end of the song she stares down at the produce sheepishly and sadly. I do agree somewhat that it being in song form brings a meaning that can't be said in everyday words for the most part. The comment above about 'if I could just say it, I wouldn't write a song about it' is strange because I've had that EXACT thought about writing poetry. Maybe Joanna and I share a similar experience in life. |
Ramones – Pet Sematary Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Has anyone heard the The Tiny cover of this? Chilling. |
M.I.A. – Paper Planes Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Attention: morons coming and saying this song is just about how great drugs/murders are. Learn to actually analyze music. That goes to the douches assuming that this is just vacuous gangster rap, too. I heard this song on Slumdog Millionaire and am really getting to like it. I agree with most of the serious interpretations of this song but I don't think it's about prostitution in any way. |
Vashti Bunyan – 17 Pink Sugar Elephants Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Beautiful, mysterious... |
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – White Corolla Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Has anybody seen the music video for this? It's great. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3dUgPvkYnw Pretty cool song. |
Cat Power – Shaking Paper Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I thought the thunder thing is definitely a possibility. It's really hard to explain the meanings you hold for songs sometimes. The best way I can say what I think about this song is kind of an ominous prediction, like a deep inspection of someone else's character, with kind of a mysterious, folklore-ish tone. It definitely is very haunting when she says the final part. Guess what I found out? You do too... |
Nina Simone – Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Well, interestingly enough, Nina did suffer from bi-polar disorder. |
Cat Power – We All Die Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It's not "drive". But there are some errors in these lyrics, and the enjambment is kind of annoying. |
Frou Frou – Close Up Lyrics | 17 years ago |
There should DEFINITELY be way more comments on this song. It's so edgy, electroclash awesomeness! |
Death Cab for Cutie – Little Fury Bugs Lyrics | 17 years ago |
My interpretation of this song is that this person is getting so fed up with their environment that they are filled with "Little Fury Bugs" and dream about running away. In the dream, him and a friend drive far away from where they live, to get away from it. In the dream he sees the faces of the people in that city and it shocks him to reality. He sits some more, dreaming, wishing someone (his father, for example) wouldn't come home so he could dream a little longer. 'Course I could be crazy. |
Imogen Heap – The Walk Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is my favorite song of all time. I love the sound of her voice. So funky, hypnotic. She is a hyper-techno-pop goddess. |
Scissor Sisters – Take Your Mama Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song is great. This is exactly how I feel. If you're gay it's quite obvious that this song is about being gay. "The folks'll wonder 'bout the wedding, They won't listen to a word you said" Is so true...It's like: "When are you gonna find a nice girl to marry? "*Sigh* ...I'm gay..." It's a pretty genious song. |
Ladytron – Destroy Everything You Touch Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think this song is about feeling frustrated, and wanting to "destroy everything you touch", and then having someone you love bring you out of being angry. |
The Killers – Andy, You're a Star Lyrics | 17 years ago |
eww2006 is right, there is no doubt in my mind that this song is about being in a gay relationship with a guy on a sports team who tries to hide it. |
The Flaming Lips – Do You Realize?? Lyrics | 17 years ago |
To me, this is really the atheist theme song. (I'm not saying it was written as that) It's about suddenly realizing that everything is just this marvelous coincedence, make the most of it before you fade away, 'cause that's all there is. |
Oingo Boingo – Dead Man's Party Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Only 8 comments? Where's the love? |
The Postal Service – Sleeping In Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Favorite PS song here, too. Remind anyone else of Imagine by John Lennon? Play them right after each other and you will experience musical euphoria. |
James Blunt – You're Beautiful Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song is hilarious in it's badness. "Yar Beautyful--ith twoo!" |
Queen – Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Hi, love the song, I was wondering if anyone could upload a link of what it would look like if you wrote the Japanese verse out in Japanese (i.e. with Japanese characters), for a signature I'm making. Thanks. |
Kanye West – Jesus Walks Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Okay, I really am not a fan of rap music (at all) but this song is quite good. I'm also an atheist, but if the words were tweaked a *tiny* bit, it could almost be a sarcastic song about religion. Plus the rhythm isn't too bad. |
Queen – Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"A stupid excuse" You couldn't get more ignorant if you tried. |
Dolly Parton – Travelin' Thru Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I normally don't like this kind of music...but I really like this song. Especially the way her voice lifts when she says "If we want to, we can fly" |
Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman – Hindi Sad Diamonds Lyrics | 17 years ago |
BTW, it's "I only speak the truth" |
Coldplay – Don't Panic Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Wow, I never expected all the comments of this being an optimistic song. Along with others who commented , I felt the final line was meant to be envious and sarcastic. To me, this song is about when you look at the world, and though you see the beauty of the interactions between people and how nice everything looks, there is a touch of sadness to every event. The feeling you get when you have so many questions. Are we going anywhere? Could everything just fall apart, has it already started to? As much as we love this world, are we fighting a losing battle against everyone, everything, and ourselves? |
Queen – Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"Was he even into all that homosexual stuff at that time anyway?" You know people are born gay. They don't get struck by some big gay asteroid and start liking the same sex. |
The Killers – Andy, You're a Star Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I don't think that line is supposed to be a stalker-type of line, if you use it with the next line: "You think you're alone, with the pain that your drain from love" Not that he's not alone on the feild, but in feeling that way. Know what I mean? |
The Killers – Somebody Told Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think Dlewis and and Zaphlin are right. It's hilarious how many people here are saying "Isn't it obvious?" Like everything they say is right. Song interpretation isn't so literal. I mean, geez, do you think Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is about a sparkly girl in the sky? This is also *my* opinion, but I wanted to look deeper into the lyrics. I think the song is sort of about the high school environment, how rumors run rampant and are just made to hurt people. The part that says "Somebody told me that you had a boyfriend that looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year" Is commenting on how ridiculous rumors get. In my opinion, it's about liking a girl that he gets made fun of for liking and the rumors start getting to him ("Never thought I'd let a rumor ruin my moonlight") Does anyone agree? |
Oasis – Morning Glory Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I also think it is about drugs, but I think it's about him telling a girl he respects (or used to) how much the addiction has a hold on her life. I thought it was like he was asking her why shy would throw her life away on something like that when she had so much more going for her. "All your dreams are made when you're chained to the mirror and the razor blade" Means to me: "You've got no where to go (no new dreams or original thought) when you're addicted to coke" |
