These are some of my favorite lyrics in modern music, and I think both versions have strengths and weaknesses. Conor I adore for writing it in the first place and for the emotion behind his performance of it. However, I find the yelling over the kick ass orchestration at the end ugly. I get that that’s the point, but I feel like a little of the beauty of the instrumental is lost to the screaming. It is possible to imbue a vocal with emotion without sacrificing pitch entirely. See: Buckley, Jeff. Jason’s cover is shallow and I take huge issue with changing the name of someone else’s song, but he has a pretty, pretty voice. Maybe at the expense of the listener feeling the full emotional effect of the lyrics, but pretty. There’s something to be said for musicality. |
