A Perfect Circle – The Hollow Lyrics 11 years ago
Seems to be about someone who is very egocentric but still wants his sexual desires satisfied in an attempt to fill the void he feels: the void of affection. Rather than seeking a long lasting relationship he chooses the easy way, seeking sexual intercourse in an attempt to fill that void, but realising each time again that after a short while the void is there again and that sex without feelings involved will never permanently fill the void he experiences.

A Perfect Circle – Brena Lyrics 11 years ago
This is about Maynard's ex partner, whose middle name was Brena.

Best love song ever. The opening line cuts like a knife. "My reflection". That is so deep. You cannot find a more deep and beautiful way to call your partner, than to say you are so deeply connected you reflect in each other. The song also says being vulnerable and fragile is OK. Where most lovesongs fall into cliches, this one goes very very deep. Cuts like a knife straight to the emotions.

Mano Negra – Mala Vida Lyrics 11 years ago
Amazing song, amazing energy. This song injects more energy into you than any energy drink can do :) "Gitana mia" is almost certainly slang for "Novia mia" or "Girl(friend) of mine". Manu Chao is often using slang in many songs, both solo and with Mano Negra.

This song was this breakthrough song and bombarded them to stars in France and beyond.

Mano Negra – King Of Bongo Lyrics 11 years ago
Although less explicit than "Welcome into Occident" and "Letters to the Censors" etc; this song is an outing of dislike of western culture and its false sense of superiority. The song drives on African beats, and the lyrics clearly describe someone seeking his luck in the big cities in the West; concluding that he prefers life as the king without a crown playing his own culture's music in his own place where he feels comfortable.

Mano Negra – Welcome In Occident Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this is one of the several songs in which the band outs their dislike of western culture (as opposed to the cultures of the countries the band members' parents came from, all of them were second generation immigrants in the Parisian suburbs). The band describes the West as a place where you have maximum liberty only if you fit in with the norms, who ask to ditch all aspects of your own culture. It outs a dislike of imperialism ("What they've done to Africa and to South America...") and about the illusion of freedom in a culture where materialism dominates all ("They tell you: man, you're free, but you gotta work early")

The subject isn't too different from some of their other songs, even including King of the Bongo, but this is more explicit. Great song by the way. Western culture is NOT superior, sadly enough people do behave as such.

Sophia – Oh My Love Lyrics 11 years ago
It was written intended to be a dialogue, and during live versions sometimes Robin performs it as a duet. But it's clearly a dialogue between a person locked up in his own world and not willing to open up, only seeing the things he wishes to see, and another person encouraging him to open up for new experiences. "Why don't you open your eyes, you might like what you find" would be the response to "Like you said, I guess that maybe I'm blind".

Sophia – So Slow Lyrics 11 years ago
One of the most beautiful and haunting songs ever written. Sums up perfectly the feeling when life is becoming a drag and you feel like the sense of it all has gone. However, noting the lines "it takes the ones that don't" and "I see you everywhere"; plus taking into count that this song comes from the first post God Machine album, it sounds like it was written about the former bass player of The God Machine who died from cancer.

Communist anthem.

Manic Street Preachers – Little Baby Nothing Lyrics 11 years ago
It is an ode to how women, in a world sometimes hostile to them and treating them as objects, stand strong and how in fact they are the strong gender, using their beauty and male fascination with it when they can. The band wanted Kylie Minogue to sing the choruses but she was not affordable at that time, so Tracy Lords did the job. Think that was a good choice, definitely an example of a woman who stayed strong in a world/scene dominated by men and treating women as objects of desire.

Note the socialist/communist note too in the line "all they leave behind is money: paper made out of broken twisted trees", devaluating the value of money.

Echo and the Bunnymen – Nocturnal Me Lyrics 11 years ago
They never went to Greenland, the photo on the Porcupine album was a glacier in Iceland. Close enough to Greenland though, and they did perform once on the windswept Hebrides islands.

However, sex... I have to disappoint you all. Ian literally said in an interview the song was just about him being up all night. The rest is I guess just some poetry without a deeper meaning but it was inspired by a time when he spent most of the night awake. He did not mention anything sexual. Hate to disappoint you :(

Reflects one of those days when things just all go wrong. Using some beautiful metaphors though. "I wish I was a stone in those castle walls so I could be a thousand years old and a hundred feet tall"; beautiful.

The God Machine – Purity Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this is about the slow descent into madness, anxiety, despair. The whole build up of the song seems to be equally important as the actual lyric. It's like searching for something to hold on to, but failing to find it, even to the extent of searching that something to hold on to in an imaginary person, then facing the disillusion when realising the person was never there.

The song starts with a long intro where very clean music gradually grows more grim, with noise elements added. Note the scratching, almost like a pen. Someone writing down his thoughts, trying to find a way out of his despair, but sinking deeper and deeper. Then there is some impossible to decipher words whispered when the music is getting more and more unsettling, before the outburst of the guitars and the extremely heavy sound reflecting the despair of the person. Also note the contradiction between "If I show you the truth, will you show me the beauty" indicating that that truth is something absolutely opposite of beautiful.

This is the song that got me into the God Machine and turned me into a fan as it made me curious to check out their entire catalogue. It also inspired me to start writing myself. Hence, and I realise how many people will disagree with me, but I consider this song to be one of the greatest pieces of music ever created. The entire structure of the song, the lyrics, the emotions and energy... this comes eeriely close to musical perfection.

The God Machine – Out Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this is about claustrophobia. The feeling when the walls are closing in on you, the stress rising and taking control, a panic attack upcoming, and all you want is to just get out.

Of course it could be a bit more metaphorically too, as one always seeing the dark side of things instead of the beautiful side of things. Hence the lyric about how one stares at a beautiful sky while Robin just sees those ugly walls around him.

Still, I think the claustrophobia interpretation may be more accurate.

The God Machine – It's All Over Lyrics 11 years ago
One of the eqsier to decipher God Machine lyrics although I think a broken relationship is too narrow as interpretation and just an example. I think the song is about how things continiously change and how nothing is intended to last forever, and even the things you care about most will sooner or later change or disappear, no matter how much they mean to you. It's a very sad song, but the lyrics speak for themselves.

The God Machine – Dream Machine Lyrics 11 years ago
Maybe because I have Asperger Syndrome myself, but this song comes across as very autistic. It seems to be about someone locked up in his own dream world, not connected very well to the real world, not understanding the other people and vice versa, but not minding too much and enjoying talking to the imaginary friends and drifting away in his dream world. Not sure what the "Sunday Velvet" at the end could refer to.

The Connells – Over There Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is a reply to an equally titled older song praising the troops going to war. The song is a sort of anti-war statement that denies the praise or glory of those going to war, instead stating there is no pride or glory in war. It's a bit of a peace anthem, based on reversing an older song that was somehow praising the military. The song is definitely intended as an anti-war song.

The Connells – Scotty's Lament Lyrics 11 years ago
Seems to be about the distorted relationship or friendship between the singer and the person he talks about, where even though the other person lied and was the root of problems, the singer blames himself and drowns in a feeling of guilt. Otherwise there is no explaining for lines such as "I faught windmills" or "I delight in my despair".

A lot of early Connells songs were very hard to decipher. "Seven" for example is another example where the lyrics are too introspective to really know the true meaning.

Interesting PS: the band in its early days was once named "Raleigh's local depressants" in a local magazine because they thought the lyrics were gloomy. I guess that is due to lines such as "I delight in my despair". I think whoever wrote for that magazine never heard of Joy Division and such. The Connells depressing?? Oh god, no, not at all.

Salem – Ha'ayara Bo'eret Lyrics 11 years ago
This is a cover of a poem originally written in Yiddish as "S'brennt" by Polish Jewish poet Mordechai Gebirtig after nazi's burnt down a jewish ghetto in Krakow. The poem was a cry for help for the rising antisemitism. The poem dates from 1938 and has since the Holocaust become a sort of anthem sung to remember those who died in the camps. The poem was translated to Hebrew as Ha'Ayara Bo'eret, "The small town is burning". It has been sung on memorial days for holocaust victims for many years. When Salem made a heavy metal cover with a shocking video that shows footage of the war (not for sensitive eyes) the Israeli parliament had to discuss if a metal band was allowed to cover such songs. The band however explained they wanted to make a statement to make sure young Israelis listening to metal would never forget what happened. That gave the band green light to release the song, although the cover remained controversial. The translation, more or less:

Burn, brothers, burn!
Our little village is burning
Black spirts are raging through it
The flames of destruction are raging
No traces will be left from the fire
And you watch without offering help
Without stretching your hands to help stop the fire
The fire of our little town

Burn, brothers, burn!
Because the hour is chas ve chalila near
As the flames will continue and destroy us all
Only walls will testify what has once been
And you watch without offering help
Without stretching your hands to help stop the fire
The fire of our little town

Burn, brothers, it's burning!
Only in your hands lies salvation
Quick, stretch your hands and stop the fire
With your blood, stop the fire
Stop the fire with your blood, don't stay at a distance
Because the flames are raging higher
It is burning! (literally ; more proper translation: "The fire is high!")

"Chas ve chalila" is impossible to translate. It's something like "please don't make this happen", like "god forbid" or something.

This is, in its context and meaning, one of the most original covers ever and one with a very deep meaning. 6 million died in the camps. We indeed should never forget. If a young crowd listening to metal is remembered this way of the horrors of the war, then I would say Salem have succeeded in their message. Of course that people considered this controversial is normal, this is a very sensitive song and few can hold tears when it is sung during memorial services.

The band Oi Va Voi recorded a more acoustic cover of the song using the original Yiddish lyrics (thus called "S'brennt")

Salem – Kaddish Lyrics 11 years ago
The song is part of the Kaddish album which is entirely about the Holocaust. The song meanings speak for itself and refer to the concentration camps during the holocaust or the attempts to escape from it ; and to never forget the 6 millions that died. "Nightmare was life itself" and "Somewhere in the back of my thought there will always be a holocaust" speak for themselves really. The title, Kaddish, is a prayer for a large number of victims (like for the victims of ethnic cleansing or genocide). I believe it is Aramic language. It is used often to remember the Holocaust victims.

Orphaned Land – Sapari Lyrics 11 years ago
The song is in Yemenite Hebrew (except for the English lines obviously) and is derived from a 400 years old poem written by a Yemenite Jewish writer. The song is supposed to describe the struggle between the poet and his soul, represented by the dove. It is very spiritual and metaphoric in meaning. Like a dialogue between man and soul.

The language is not present day Hebrew, the poem on which the song is based is about 400 years old and in Yemenite Hebrew.

It translates more or less as:

(poet) Tell me, pure and perfect one (talking to the spirit), tell me where do you make your home?
Tell me so that we can rejoice here in Taima (which is a spiritually very important city, but also a metaphor for heaven)

(the dove/spirit) Saadiah, there is a chamber high in the palace reserved for me
But though I could dress myself in beauty my heart is full of lamentation

Saadiah is the name of the poet.

Turning a 400 years old poem in a defunct language into a multicultural rock song. Orphaned Land alone could do that. This song is epic in so many ways.

Orphaned Land – Norra el Norra (Entering the Ark) Lyrics 11 years ago
Interesting to know is that the band used ancient Hebrew (this is not modern Hebrew as used in Israel today) on a song of which the music is based upon an old Lebanese folk song. Talking about mixing the cultural elements of the Middle East! A symbolic mixture of two nations in state of near war, spreading a message of peace between the lines.

Orphaned Land – Ocean Land (The Revelation) Lyrics 11 years ago
The song speaks for itself if you know that it is part of the Mabool album, a concept album of the flood (Mabool in Hebrew) that is a metaphor for something that can wash away all that has been or wash away all differences and wars. It symbolises that mankind has to unite to overcome that all we strived for will be washed away.

Indeed the three men of flesh and blood represent the three monotheistic religions: Islam, Christianity, Judaism. They warn a flood is coming and that mankind has to unite to overcome it. It is like a warning or prophecy in the story of the album. "This place where man used to be born" refers to Israel, the Middle East, which is the cradle of civilisation and of course Jerusalem is a holy city in all three monotheistic religions. The outro of the song is an Islamic call for prayer as you can hear from the minarets of any mosque in the Middle East.

A Perfect Circle – The Hollow Lyrics 17 years ago
EisforEmotional, there's more men who don't care that much about sex... I for one, refrain from one night stands. Sex is only an asset to life when there's an emotional bond next to the physical bond, the emotional bond (as in "this wonderful girl is in my arms, I am so privileged" / 'wonderful' as a perdsonality, not physically) lifts it to a higher level. I dislike one night stands, it's so empty or, yes, hollow. I'd even say sex isn't that important at all in life and is very overrated.

Anyway, this song is quite straight forward about the meaninglessness of sex without love. About how it only chases away the loneliness for a very short while, and then leaves a bitter disappointment behind.

And for all clarity: Maynard is straight. Brena was written for his former GIRLfriend, and he has a son so he obviously needed a WOMAN for that :)
For all you fans: an amazing live version of this song: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7727098633120432405&q=perfect+circle+hollow

The Smiths – Hand in Glove Lyrics 18 years ago
It is a gay anthem yes, at least that's the context it has gotten over the years. I think however it can be about any couple. "No it's not like any other love, this one is different because it's us" is what every person should feel regarding his/her lover, that's what romance is all about after all. The "we may be hidden by rags but we've something they never have" can refer to a gay relationship or to ANY bond between two people in the margins of society. I think it can apply to anyone and is a real love anthem rather than a gay love anthem (although it ends with despair when expressing the pessimism of "I probably never see you again")

The Smiths – There Is a Light That Never Goes Out Lyrics 18 years ago
There Is A Light... is probably one of the best workpieces of the typical macabre yet deeply romantic visions of Morrissey where gloom and romance collide.

The story tells how the person doesn't want to return home, as he doesn't feel at home in the place that he in theory belongs, so he takes off with the woman (man?) he loves, destination unknown, with just each other as certainties.

The morbid-macabre element is that the person doesn't express his feelings by wishing for a lifetime by her side, but by wishing to die in her arms. Yet at the same time the whole idea of running off with the person you love, is deeply romantic. The Smiths combine feelings of longing, affection and gloom in a marvellous way.

The song also expresses a theme that often comes back in Smiths songs: loneliness, and not managing to express your feelings: the character wishes to declare his love and in the middle of his romantic experience he wants to do it, but then a strange fear comes up and he swallows his words again... This (along with other Smiths songs about loneliness, not fitting in and being misunderstood) is why me and other Aspergers sufferers often recognise ourselves in the lyrics of Morrissey.

The song has different possible interpretations: it could be about the romantic ideal of just leaving together with the person you love, but another often heard interpretation is that it is about prostitution: the lonely person seeking the missed affection in the arms of a callgirl, meanwhile still feeling depressed and wishing to die in her arms. If the latter interpretation would be correct, the 'light' that never goes out could refer to the neon lights on the brothel windows.

Yet another possibility -although less likely correct- is that the 'light that never goes out' has to be taken as a metaphor: a 'light' is an intelligent person, and Morrissey had only few social contacts in his youth and rarely wanted to go out in the nightlife.

I think the interpretation of the escape together with the one you love, is the most likely one. The 'light that never goes out' could represent the love that doesn't die, or the feeling of hope/longing that can never be broken down.

The Smiths – Girlfriend in a Coma Lyrics 18 years ago
Girlfriend In A Coma has always been one of my favourite Smiths songs and has remained its status over the years. The title alone made me curious from the first time that I held the cd case of Strangeways Here We Come in my hands. But the lyrics are very interesting as well.

The song basically tackles the most extreme feelings of humans (love and hatred) and brings on how close these two feelings can sometimes be to each other. Morrissey manages to, in one single sentence, bring on the both extremes and all feelings in between.

The contrast is brought on on several occasions:

"there were times I could have murdered her" expresses hatred and aggression towards the person, but is immediately followed by a desire to still not lose her: "I would hate anything to happen to her".

Also, the chorus expresses this same situation: "No I don't want to see her" expresses the wish not to see his dying partner again, but his insecurity over his own feelings rises immediately after when he somehow longs to hold her in his arms again and insecurely asks "do you really think she'll pull through?"

The song basically descibres a confused mind and shows how close human feelings can be to each other, how confused humans can be emotionally. The song uses the most extreme feelings (loving someone -vs- hating someone) and everything in between.
Also, the confusion is expressed by Morrissey having to convince himself and repeat to himself "I know - it's SERIOUS" (well, of course it's serious, she's in a coma !)

Of course Morrissey wouldn't be Morrissey when there would be no political reference in his work: the song was based on a conflict in the USA about if it is acceptable to let a person die when she's comatose for too long. In that time a woman in the US was at the breathing machine for ages, with little hope she'd ever awake. She was clinically alive but also braindead. There was a huge debate over if it should be allowed to just unplug the breathing machine or not. Morrissey based the song on this ongoing moral debate, and injected it with a dose of human confusion and personal drama.

A true Smiths classic!

Echo and the Bunnymen – With A Hip Lyrics 18 years ago
I interpretate this song very personally now, so probably it was not what Ian intended. But to me, it's an autistic song.

I have Asperger Syndrome myself, a form of autism. And somehow the emotions in the first lines express something recognisable: not feeling welcome in many places, or just not fitting in, not feeling comfortable. The lines about the shitting on the carpet and especially the "this is the one for me" feel to me like saying it's not wrong to be different and that it's each to his own: regardless what you're into or who you are, it's not less worthy than the majority and there's no reason to hide your true self and your own way of being. "This is the one for me", it sounds so logical and normal, even if whatever it is is really not conform the mass.
I hope I explain well where I am coming from. It's probably not the actual meaning, Ian very likely had something entirely different in mind. But to me it has become a bit of a personal anthem. It's also done extremely well live, Ian's voice sounds more rock-esque than in the old days and that somehow suits the rough character of this song.

Echo and the Bunnymen – The Killing Moon Lyrics 18 years ago
Ian has told a few times what it's about (sorry to ruin debates with interview quotes, but that's being a true Bunnymen addict for you). It's about religion, about ignoring earthly pleasures and desires because of wanting to stay true to your religious believes. "He will wait until you give yourself to Him" - the He and Him is not some distant boyfriend or so, it's God. Ian has clearly confirmed this in several interviews, and it was also shortly mentionned in Turquoise Days, the EATB biograpghy. Apart from that I do adore the imaginary of this song: "your lips' magic world, the sky all hung with jewels" - you will rarely find a line more romantic than that. The video is also a must-see, deeply romantic yet somewhat macabre, showing Ian's face lit by the moon only. And last but not least, the sleeve pic for the old vinyl single shows a remote nocturnal rocky beach with a little boat drifting near the shoreline, all lit by only the moon. No picture could suit this song better.

Echo and the Bunnymen – The Back Of Love Lyrics 18 years ago
Another OCD song. "I am on the chopping block, stopping off my chopping thoughts" is clearly about compulsory thinking and overanalysing, whereas "we know we love extremes. Getting to grips with the ups and downs cause there is nothing in between" are clear references to the extreme emotions and moodswings of OCD sufferers. Ian told the song was a reaction against the cheesy lovesongs that just picture the pretty side of love, ignoring it can sometimes be a really painful thing as well, so he wrote a song focussing on that other side of romance. However, to me it's a very OCD-directed song, one of the clearest references to OCD in their works.

Echo and the Bunnymen – Ocean Rain Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with that latter sentence. This is my favourite song ever. The music, the build-up, the atmosphere, the lyrics, the fantastic outro with Ian's high vocals screaming out and howling to the moon... This is one of the very few songs that has reached perfection. The highlight of every EATB concert.
The song is about letting go of dreams I think, regardless of what the dream is (he uses a lost romance in the song, but I think you can easily use the lyric and its sentiment in a different situation as well, the general mood is just disillusionment and letting go of dreams). Ian uses nautical terms to express the sentiments: the rain to wash away the pain, whereas the sea and the storm are representing the sadness in his words. "Your port in my heavy storm harbours the blackest thoughts" - must be one of the darkest lines ever written. A fellow Bunnymen fan told me he considered this a funeral song, and I do agree: a funeral for a lost dream. At the same time, despite the depressed undertone, the song is deeply romantic and the ideal song to hold your girlfriend in your arms and fall asleep together while listening to the music. The song is romantic yet depressed at the same time, but both sides feel so honest. World class song. Who dares to say that the Beatles are the best thing ever from Liverpool, deserves a slap. McCartney and Lennon never managed to write anything that comes close to this.

My favourite song ever, along with Ocean Rain, both coming from the best album of all-time: Ocean Rain. Oh how I adore Echo & The Bunnymen, Ian's my hero, the only idol I have in life.
As for this song: I think it is just about imaginary scenes, about a dreamy atmosphere. "an ice-capped fire on burning wood" sounds so beautiful yet also very surreal. I think the song just tries to create a surreal imaginary landscape full of beauty and full of dreams. Apart from that, Ian told it was an ode to the night, written in a time he was often awake and writing at nighttime.

Echo and the Bunnymen – Just A Touch Away Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this is another song about Ian's OCD. "You could make IT disappear and make my pathway clean and clear". I think the "it" refers to the issues in his head, or the "demon" as he called it himself sometimes. I could be wrong, it may be just my own interpretation as being an OCD sufferer myself. But to me it always made perfect sense that this was about someone who promised to love him and help him no matter what, whereas the person forgot about her promise and leaves him behind with the issues still there.

Echo and the Bunnymen – I'll Fly Tonight Lyrics 18 years ago
Ian actually told in an interview that this was about his (now ex-)wife Lorraine and about his OCD. He says it was an ode to her for standing by his side throughout the difficult moments and for not giving up on him despite the demons in his head (the neurosis). Meanwhile they did devorce unfortunately, but at the time the song was written all was still going well obviously, and this song was intended a dedication to his wife back then. Some consider it a romantic song with an eerie undertone, but I don't spot any eerieness. It is one of my favourite songs ever though, and one of the songs that made me fall in a deep love with this band, a love that never faded and still burns heavily.

Echo and the Bunnymen – Don't Let It Get You Down Lyrics 18 years ago
This is obviously one of the more accessible Bunnymen songs and one of the easier lyrics, easy to understand yet intelligent enough ("since you're gone, you know there's nothing or no one to hang love on" - that sounds really well). The one part I wonder about is why he sings "God's above us, and Jesus loves us". In earlier songs the Bunnymen have shown a big anti-religious feeling ("deny you were ever tempted by the lie that there's an answer in the sky", "I pray, nothing happens: Jesus is all in my mind", "man has to be his own saviour") and Ian confirmed in interviews that he is not religious at all. So this one sentence showing a pro-religious attitude must be ironically intended?

Echo and the Bunnymen – Evergreen Lyrics 18 years ago
This song to me is about chasing your dreams in life, and never letting go of them, about setting a goal and never moving away from that path. The motto in the second part is very clear: keep it flaming your desire, always rising higher, aim for stars and hit the sky! To me it has always been a travel anthem, as travelling has always been my own goal in life, and the sound somehow has a big on-the-road feeling to me. A great song which I hope the band re-introduces to its life set again someday.

Echo and the Bunnymen – Crocodiles Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about obsessive-compulsive disorder (neurosis). Ian McCulloch suffered from OCD himself during his childhood, and so I do (still suffer from it). The "ups and downs" refer, I think, to the mood swings that OCD sufferers often experience, or maybe just even to the ups and downs of the life of someone with mental issues. "Listen to the sound they make" would be a metaphore then for "see what the disorder causes and brings you", whereas the "don't you scream when it gets loud" could be the anxiety coming in. I could be very wrong about this, but to me Crocodiles has always felt like an OCD anthem.

Echo and the Bunnymen – All My Colours Lyrics 18 years ago
The song is about letting go of dreams, of the depressed mood that swamps you when you realise what you really want slips away from your reach. "All my colours turn to clouds" and "that box you gave me burnt nicely" clearly indicates that, as does the whole feeling of the song. The 'zimbo' was done by coincidence in fact: they wanted some word to fill the gap between the other parts of the song, and at some moment Ian just said 'Jimbo Jimbo' refering to a Doors record playing, they thought that actually looked quite good to fill that space but did change it to 'zimbo zimbo' as it somehow fitted better they thought.

Bauhaus – She's In Parties Lyrics 18 years ago
I always felt like it was about some dark underground gathering where things happen that are not supposed to be known in public. The 'parties' could refer to that, as do the 'special effects' that may refer to the events happening there. I could be totally wrong though. Brilliant song, and a great video. The whole look of the boys, the clothing, the haircuts, it's like one of those old horror films based on old gothic novels. The essence of gothic music was captured in this song and its video.

Bauhaus – All We Ever Wanted Was Everything Lyrics 18 years ago
They did play it during the last tour indeed, hopefully they will do so again during the upcoming tour. The song is very simple yet the words are very well chosen. It's about the point in life where routine has taken control and all days look the same, no nice perspectives, nothing to bring a spark into your life. "squash every week into a day" speaks for itself I think: very little happening, very little joys to be felt, as if time goes by slower than it really does.

Bauhaus – The Passion Of Lovers Lyrics 18 years ago
Interesting analyses there, Iris. Also, I wonder what is meant with "as I watched from underneath I came aware of all that she keep" and "she gets the better of the bigger to the letter". "cracked pleasures" (see my nickname :p) is a synonym for 'forbidden joys', the sort of pleasures one should not really like and should keep well hidden from the public eye.
