I've heard the Motley Crue theory, and although I can't verify anything, I think that's more likely than Elton John/Michael Jackson/Boy George/Prince. Boy George is the only arguably wearing "the earring and the makeup" at any given time anyway (as for MJ and Prince, neither is a verified homosexual nor a frequent wearer or earrings or makeup). I think rather "faggot" is used colloquially to mock the flamboyance of MTV. A lot of early stars of MTV became popular more for their image than for their music (Crue seems to typify it as well as anybody). |

I think this song is about the music industry and generic lyrics. "So take your sentence full of things you're not supposed to say and carry on but don't write it down or you'll be gone," as I interpret it, is saying that if you say anything controversial, the music industry will not reward you as fruitfully as those who stick to the generic template.
It's nothing new (Journey made a career out of it) but Stone Sour has never exactly been pro-industry. |

To the critics of this song who want to claim Nickelback is too generic, this sounds a lot like criticisms of AC/DC. However, Nickelback is MUCH more diverse. They have harder rockers like Never Again and slower ones like this. These criticisms aren't as bad as the ones who claim Nickelback has sold out: Just because you make great albums than sell twenty billion copies doesn't mean you sold out, it just means your music was very good. |

1. Ozzy Osbourne was the singer for Black Sabbath, but also had a renowned solo career with his own, self-titled band.
2. The 80's weren't even Ozzy Osbourne's best decade for music (The 70's with Sabbath were), and his best album (No More Tears) was released in the 90's.
3. This is a DEF LEPPARD song, not Ozzy. Joe Elliott is the singer. You could argue all day who's better, Ozzy or Def Leppard, but just appreciate both for what they are: Superb. |

To clarify a few things.
1. The song is unquestionably anti-war. Questioning it is like saying Johnny B. Goode is not about a man named Johnny B. Goode. Ironic seeing as Black Sabbath are supposedly the princes of darkness.
2. This song almost certainly relates to the Vietnam War. Makes sense as all members of Sabbath appear to be politically liberal.
3. The message of this song can be taken for any war. The message is of elitists in the government allowing their people to die. It happened with Republicans in Vietnam and Iraq, and it happened with Democrats to an extent in Korea with efforts from Harry S Truman. |
