You know, I actually did the same thing. I was with (no sex) another guy for a few days while my boyfriend was away. He had lived away at college for two semesters and for the summer he was living away, too. And I couldn't take it. I, obviously commenting on this in 2006 and three years before my lapse in judgment, never really got deep into this song until this past summer when my world came crashing down.
I really want to know what happened to Dave and this girlfriend. If it worked out. Because almost a year later, I still feel every ounce of remorse and every line in this song fits perfectly. |

Maybe it's about his grandfather, I know Ace lost him right at the end of TEN's last tour, amidst the break-up of the band and everything maybe his life was hectic and he may have skipped out on talking or visiting his grandfather, and then he passed away before Ace got another chance to talk to him. This song seems to be about regret, so maybe it's regret for not getting to say goodbye to him. This is just a guess. |

Yes, I'm from New Jersey and people here call it "The City" here, too. It's more of a north Jersey thing. I'm in South Jersey and my first instinct when I hear "The City" is Philadelphia, since it's much closer than NYC.
Either way, I think "The City" as a nickname for any city is stupid and annoying and quite obnoxious. Just my opinion, that's all. |

I don't know, I thought of "stung" as like, a bee sting, something that hurt him. He's young, he's dumb, and he's damaged. Okay maybe not damaged, but I don't think it means drunk. Just that he's been through shit, he's no stranger to pain, and though he's young and dumb, he's not inexperienced and he's got enough sense because life knocked sense in to him with everything that's been thrown at him.
At least, that's how I like to twist the words to revolve around me, which is what I do to as many songs as possible to make them more personal. *shrugs* |

Thank you ohtess for posting that, because I couldn't help but laugh at whoever thought this song was about drugs or recovery or anything other than getting over a break up and moving the fuck on from something that shouldn't have been anything to begin with. Though crimsonsky I don't discredit your explanation at the bottom of your post, but it is most definitely about getting over an ex, and it really is empowering as I'm going through a similar situation. |

Convincingly put it together? Easily. It's about their decision to end their relationship. To me this whole song is about a breakup, and how she doesn't really want it to end, but does it anyway. "The last time that I saw you, this is the end" meaning the last time they saw each other was when they broke it off, when they ended their relationship, when they severed all ties. She misses him, she still thinks about him, and has not been able to get over it. |

Really digging the new direction they are going in. This song is obviously about the growth of their love, and just judging by a lot of songs off of ZAVD, Chelsea is really his biggest inspiration for most of his songs. How awesome must that make her feel?

...I hope it's not about his dog. In the beginning he says "I try to CALL but the reception here is weak" So I hope he doesn't try to call his dog. And I don't know if you're a girl or guy, but girls hair gets stuck everywhere. I am a girl, and live in an all female household, and I always find stray hairs on sweatshirts or pillows and in this case, suitcases. And "waiting by the door" doesn't necessarily mean wagging a tail staring at the door. It could just mean he hopes she's there, waiting for him to get home and be excited to see him after being away for so long.
If this is about his dog, you totally killed the song for me hahaha. |

To me this is hitting kind of personal, because I am stuck in a rut right now as a freshman at a community college while all of my friends are off at universities starting their new lives and I'm still at home. I'm sick of feeling like this, like I'm "stuck" here with no idea what I want to do with my life and afraid everyone is going to move on with their lives and forget about the girl they left behind at home. I just want to be free, to be find a direction and go. I don't want to sit here, growing older and older in the same house I've been in for 19 years, while everyone around me has moved on.

Man now that I heard it I finally paid attention to the lyrics.
It's so sad. I had leukemia as well, and while in the hospital I shared a room with a boy named Josh who had a very serious, complicated type of cancer. He didn't make it. Since then I've known many, many people, mostly kids younger than 18, that have died because cancer took their life. It is such an awful, awful shame. I will keep this song in my head and in my heart for all of the young lives lost due to cancer. =/ |

TEN finished their finale show in Philadelphia last year with this song. The lights started out low. Everyone was on stage by the end. They gave an adorable grand bow all together at the end. It was incredible. Epic. Gorgeous.
I will miss this band. And the feeling this song gave me knowing he was so happy with the band at one point, yet it all just fell apart in the end. |

I think each stanza represents something different, but all tied together by one word,
First: being scared because you can't see where your life is going, or if it's going to turn out okay, and feeling a bit helpless.
Second: feeling depressed and saddened by a lot of things around you; you're not laughing at jokes, you see houses as tombstones, which I absolutely love the imagery that the people buried in their "houses" are all just as dead as you feel. You feel helpless knowing that now matter how many things change in your life, you still feel the same way.
Third: the election, obviously. though I really don't think SLR is picking sides. I think they're trying to represent that, like in one of the other new songs, that there is a lot of empathy going on regarding this year's election. And that there are many voters who are not educating themselves enough on both of the candidates and their veeps to be able to wisely choose a candidate that is right for them. We're deer in headlights; blind. Knowing we want change, we want to be helped, we want to be saved, we want our past resolved. Yet we're frozen; depressed; helpless.

This reminds me of John Mayer's "Waiting For The World To Change" in that rather than writing a song saying we all need to stand up and fight for the country and all, it represents those who are just sitting back and waiting, literally, for the world to change itself, or die.

The weakest get hunted and eaten alive
We lock all our doors, close our windows up tight
Cower in fear and thank god that we're so civilized"
To me that's depicting the lackadaisical attitude that is widely shared throughout the country; the fact that people sit in their homes on their couches watching the news on their little TV sets, thinking "oh how great it is to be me" as if they're invulnerable to the devastation that is happening in not just other countries, but in their own backyards. I think it's a play on our naivety.
I don't think it's written from John's perspective, as in I don't think he really feels this way. I think he's writing it on behalf of how he views the country and the general public.
