The Strokes – I'll Try Anything Once Lyrics 15 years ago
is anyone sure that it's "soon you were born in 1984"?
"soon" doesn't seem to fit in...
it sounds more like he's saying "son" or "saying"...?

Donovan – Hurdy Gurdy Man Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's Sunshine Superman, not this song, that Zeppelin (minus Plant) played on.

haha, what do you expect from Kings of Leon?
"I hear you're blowing like a feather, and then they rub it in your face"....

Kings of Leon – Revelry Lyrics 15 years ago
It's "everything just felt so incomplete", not "empty"
This is one of the best songs off their new album, in my opinion, along with Cold Desert. It's a sort of common theme in KOL songs, Caleb's (or the character in the songs') inability to maintain a relationship because of his personality, or his lifestyle, or whatever. It's similar to the theme in Black Thumbnail, but in this one he seems much more vulnerable and apologetic and regretful, and it makes for a beautiful song.

The Beatles – Something Lyrics 17 years ago
Someone commented that this song is based on a James Brown song, which is wrong. It's based on the James Taylor song, "Something In The Way She Moves", which was released in 1968 by Apple Records. George and Paul both worked on James Taylor's album with him, and George used the first line (and title) of James's song as a sort of temporary first line to start writing a song, but ended up keeping it.

Dashboard Confessional – Dusk and Summer Lyrics 17 years ago
I love how Chris's voice sort of shakes when he sings the word "change" in the lines "And she told you bad things/You wished you could change". It makes it seem as if it kind of hurts him to say the line...someone posted earlier that this song lacks the passion of his older songs, and although I'm partial to the older, acoustic stuff myself, I really have to disagree. I think he sings this song beautifully and with a lot of the feeling that his stuff has admittedly been lacking recently. This song is gorgeous, and to me, could easily be one of his earlier songs.

The Velvet Underground – Pale Blue Eyes Lyrics 17 years ago
"she said money is like us in time
it lies but can't stand up
down for you is up."

these lines, to me, always seem to be referring to not being able to face up to something. there is, of course, a play on words in reference to the money, as others have pointed out, namely the physical (it literally lies but cannot stand up) and the more symbolic (that money lies is a common notion, and it further cannot own up to the destruction it causes in people). i think, however, that the reference to money being "like us" refers to the secret or otherwise complicated relationship between the two in the song. they are able to lie, both to others and to themselves, but cannot truly face up to what is between them, or perhaps, even though they know it is wrong, they cannot bring themselves to "stand up" to the fact that they want to be together and do the right thing, which would be to end what is between them. the "down for you is up", then, simply seems to refer to the notion that because of this, everything in their world is upside down, and the usually clear lines between what is good and bad are being blurred because of their emotions and their connection to each other.

that's how i've always felt about those lines.

The Black Crowes – She Talks To Angels Lyrics 17 years ago
I've always associated this song with Pat Conroy's novel, "The Prince of Tides" ... it may have been because I was reading it around the first time I heard this song, but the connections between the girl in the song and the character of Savannah in the novel were very startling...did anyone else find this?

the line is "I can't see how the way that you leave me alone makes us close"...not "only makes us close"

Bright Eyes – Padraic My Prince Lyrics 17 years ago
FourDiceS wrote:

"Padraic Colum was a great poet that died 20 years ago,
im looking for meaning, if anyone finds anything, msg me...
He wrote poets and plays...

Three plays Broken Sail The Fiddler's House and The land revealed in simple language the strong conflicts between the world of the artist and the world of the land"

I really have no idea, because I haven't read any of those plays, but the title "Broken Sail" made me think of "Oh, You Are The Roots That Sleep Beneath My Feet And Hold The Earth In Place", the part:

"There was this book I read and loved
The story of a ship that sailed around the world
And found that nothing else exists
Beyond its own two sails, and wooden shell
And what is held within"

There may be no connection at all, it's just a thought.

This song was written by Donovan for Jenny Boyd, Pattie Boyd's younger sister who he dated for a while in the late '60s.

Joan Baez – Diamonds and Rust Lyrics 17 years ago
"What really is the core issue is: Did Bob really love Joan or was she just a 'deviation' for him when he broke up with Suze."

In response to this, I think Dylan absolutely loved Joan Baez, he was just unable to express it in a way that was adequate for either of them. In "No Direction Home", when he's talking about her and how careless he was with her, Dylan says "It's hard to be wise and in love at the same time." For Dylan, that's such a vulnerable statement, and I think a very telling one.

Bob Dylan – Sara Lyrics 18 years ago
dylan wrote this in 1975/76 when he and his wife sara were having marital problems and were going to separate ... i guess it sort of worked, cause they stayed together til '77.

regardless of the success of its intent, it's a gorgeous song - though i must say, i dig Sad Eyed Lady more.

Bob Dylan – Visions of Johanna Lyrics 18 years ago
i know no one wants to believe this one's about joan baez, and i'm not entirely convinced myself, but in her song "Winds of the Old Days", which is about Dylan, she makes reference to this song in the last lines.

"Ghosts of Johanna will visit you there
And the winds of the old days will blow through your hair ."
