Bright Eyes – Haligh, Haligh, a Lie, Haligh Lyrics 15 years ago
you've got it wrong, she never dies, it's their relationship that dies. his feelings are numb, their relationship is over, whenever he hears anyone being happy he can't even understand because he's so heartbroken, it's a sound he doesn't even recognize. the lines "you said you hate my suffering, and you understood, and you'd take care of me, you'd always be there, well where are you now?" isn't because she's dead, but just because she's not his girlfriend anymore, she promised that when they were together she'd make sure he wasn't sad and that she'd, obviously, take care of him, but she cheated on him and they're not together and he doesn't have the care he needs to keep him happy. he just is in a spiral down and down after this breakup, remembering the good times they had but knowing he'll never have them again. "you tear and tear your hair from root, from that same head you've twice removed now a lock of hair you said would prove our love would never die, well ha ha ha," is like, she cut out her hair and gave it to him to say, we'll always be together, but now she's tearing out her hair because she's so upset that he can't forgive her.

basically this song just makes me never want to fall in love.

Regina Spektor – Chemo Limo Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's about the woman who is very close to dying from cancer and undergoing chemo. In the song she says that she can't even really afford it ("I can afford chemo like I can afford a limo") so she's really worried about the financial situation that will be left after she dies, especially with her kids.. pretty much all of this has been said already.. anyway I don't think she actually does decide to stop paying for chemo to get a limo, she just fantasizes that that's the way she'll spend her final time with her kids, hence the references to dreams and going west (dying). In her dream she realizes what she'll be missing, it's really pretty depressing.

The "Oh my god Barbara, she looks so much like my mom.." gets me every time.

The Shins – Red Rabbits Lyrics 17 years ago
There are a few parts of the song that make me think it's about environmentalism and/or native americans... In the first stanza, I think the environmentalist aspect is pretty clear: "It hurts to breathe in," with smog and such, "The watershed you balance on is begging it," could work too I guess, I don't know what a watershed is to be honest. Then it talks about how "the trees in the moonshine are a dark lattice," but all they care about is the angle, which could be a reference to logging companies, or even just the indifference man has towards nature. Then it says that he can't think about it anymore, coupled with the "We've pissed of too many sprites/And they're all standing up for their rights," which could be taken as earth sprites that can't take it anymore either.. that's pretty weak I guess. After that is where it seems to be a lot more about native americans and the western invasion, "You've the deepest thirst, and you came to my shore to indulge it." Then it talks about hunting for "red rabbits," which could be like red as in native americans. Then it talks about "hollow cries" (the native american's "rebel yell"), "the boils were swollen" (the use of small pox as a biological weapon). A last evidence I can find is "Who decides who paddles over the falls? Yeah, who makes the call, Who makes the call?" like native americans sending soldiers off waterfalls in canoes (I don't know if that ever happened, but that's what I'm reminded of).

Of course, I haven't really offered up any meaning, but I just see these connections and am hoping someone else can see them too.

The Shins – Phantom Limb Lyrics 17 years ago
I think when they say "when they tap our monday heads/two zombies walk in our stead," it's showing how the schoolweek is, you know, crappy and everything, but then when it switches to "sunday heads," it's showing that the town has beaten them down and they might not even have any time to be themselves and together anymore.

Cursive – Driftwood: A Fairy Tale Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm pretty sure the whispering at the end of the song is hard to hear because several stories are being whispered at once.
