Generally agreeing with the comment corrections... I take the first part as the speaker thinking to himself, 'yours' being the memory of an ex-lover. She's not there to listen, but the memory of her is still so powerful that he, not only addresses it as if she could hear, but frames new experiences, new people, in the context of her memory. Even gone, she's more important to him than most of the people around him. as to the later part, I hear an implied or whispered '[If you] save yourself I'll save you all the time,' a subtle acknowledgement that, whatever role the lovers feel they are playing, they are in some inescapable way alone and separate. It has a similar theme, in a sorrowful mood, to the exultation of Poppy on Desperate Youth. It is powerful, and reminds me of someone I still know, and someone I used to. |

beautiful song. perfect love isn't about dependence, or need, but instead simply being and being together |

it's trying to find an identity as a black person, i think. the narrator it taking these roles one by one, the 'magic nigger' of a movie, the soulful churchgoer, a 'loiterer' hungry for bling. it's more than just criticism because, although each role is rejected, the idea of moving from one to another illustrates a searching for what defines oneself. in the end, he comes up with something stronger and more independant than any of these cookiecutter roles. faced with a culture 'shooting doves from balconies' and 'shackling the lame,' he's gonna take liberty (the permission he's asking is of niña, a non-english word for 'girl.' the use of non-english indicates she is not white) |

i agree, it's about Marc. i've seen the narrator as being bowie/ziggy, making the Lady Stardust a kind of spiritual or metaphoric mate |

mevlana, that's awesome. i just gained about 3 times more respect for this band than i had:) the line, 'note the trees because the/dirt is temporary' is one of the most brilliant phrases i've ever heard. trees are symbols of permanence, strength. i think of ancient redwoods hundreds or thousands of years old. but really, nothing is permanent... if each human being considers himself as always existing (that is, that it's rather impossible to conceive of the world you've entirely experienced through your own senses occuring without you), but it's as fleeting as anything else. not only will the trees not last forever, the very dirt will one day fade. amazing |
