Scott Walker – 30 Century Man Lyrics 15 years ago
The song was not composed specifically for The Life Aquatic, as it was originally from on of Scott Walkers albums: "Scott 3," released in '69.

My interpretation - I think the song is talking about impressions of greatness. Some people are historical dwarves and some are giants, but in the long run the difference depends on how well you're image ages. Or, in other words, it depends on how well you're remembered. A man might be world famous today, but will his fame last?

Radiohead – Street Spirit (Fade Out) Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about society not taking care of those who need it most. The narrator, just one man, feels overwhelmed by the situation. He's been consumed by the system too.

Radiohead – Black Star Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the black star represents an excuse people make up to avoid the truth. "It wasn't you, it was me."

After all, if there's a black star in the sky, you can't see it. It isn't really there, but you pretend.

Radiohead – Bullet Proof...I Wish I Was Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about the images we create for ourselves, which are often the images other people want from us. Nonetheless, even though we give them what we think they want, we're still not bulletproof. If you try to please others, you'll never be happy because they'll always want more.

The images, the false facades, all are bubbles that the narrators knows can be easily burst, just like his own.

My Morning Jacket – One Big Holiday Lyrics 17 years ago
Amazing guitar in this song.

My first interpretation was like Coffee's: that the song represented the band's experience of getting a record deal and how it chanegd their lives. I think the song has some sad undercurrents, though.

The word 'shakin,' especially, is an interesting choice. Sometimes people use shake to indicate dancing, but if you think about it, the word shake almost always has a violent connotation. Maybe the shaking is caused by drugs or stress, just a guess.

I think the first line "wakin' up, feelin' good & limber," follow by the next two, indicates that something is about to change. Sure, a record deal will change their lives, but feelin' good an limber is a pretty general phrase, so it might indicate that they're loosing their innocence.

All just speculation, of course, but it's fun nonetheless.

Led Zeppelin – Immigrant Song Lyrics 17 years ago
Just throwing in my two cents:

I agree with the interpretations that it's about the Vikings, but I think there's a deeper level to the symbols here as well. Specifically, because you rarely hear of the vikings referred to as "immigrants."

In that sense, I particularly like Mad Tom and Frosted's comparison of the Viking invasions to the "British Invasion" of bands to America.

When I heard the song, my first interpretation was also that it was about America, comparing the influx of immigrants during the colonial period to the Viking attacks in Europe. After all, to the NAtive Americans, the Europeans must have seemed like brutal invaders from the land of ice and snow.

Green Day – She Lyrics 17 years ago
One of my favorite songs of all time. I'm a huge Green Day fan, but I think this is one of the few songs in Dookie with any serious meaning. I mean, basketcase? Comon' guys. The rest of the album is fun, no doubt, but this song speaks to the soul of teenage life.

"She" is about a silent prison, one created by teachers, counselors, and parents, all pushing you in directions you don't want to go. If you want to really make a life for yourself, you have to destroy the reality they've created for you, violently if necessary, and escape.

The Cure – A Pink Dream Lyrics 17 years ago
The lyrics here seem unambiguous, but this is one of my favortie Cure songs so I'll toss my hat in the ring anyway.

I think LokiTheCat sums it up pretty well. The song is about a beautiful girl the narrator met at the beach. He loved the time they spent together, but for him, the experience was tainted by the fact that the experience had to end. For the girl, on the other hand, it was just another fling at the beach.

In a way, the song is like a poem that just describes the feeling of the whole experience, especially the last four lines.

For Love Not Lisa – Slip Slide Melting Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about the narrator's collapsing relationship. He loves the woman, but she makes him feel so terrible that he would rather have his heart taken away so that he can "find some space in the sunshine."

Great song; I love the Crow and the soudntrack. I think this is probably one of the underrated tracks on the album, compared to the ubiquitous works of NiN and STP.

Rainer Maria – I Love You Too Lyrics 17 years ago
Curiously, the lyrics to this song have been removed from many lyrics sites. I guess the band wants listeners to speculate on the meaning for themselves.

The impression I get from the song is that the title is meant to be ironic. It starts off soothing, but ends up grungy and wrenching. The love might be unreciprocated or the title phrase might be said sarcastically at the end of an argument.

Mono – Life In Mono Lyrics 18 years ago
Given the definition of "ingenue" and the first line "The Stranger Sang a Theme," I think that 'performance' and art have something to do with this song. The theme is also "from someone else's dream," like a piece written by one person and performed by others.

Perhaps the narrator of the song has severed a relationship and doesn't know how to act now that it's over. Her memories and regrets have faded, time has passed and seasons gone by, but she can't forget him. She doesn't remember how they met, but it impacted he life so much that she can't forget it either.

Another impression I get is that the song is all a flash, blur, or impression of a memory. She might have only seen this person briefly, fallen in love on sight, and then never seen them again. Maybe the stranger singing and the tree lined avenue have something to do with where they met.

Paradoxically the narrator "can't seem to recall" when he came along, but also "can't seem to forget" either. This tells me that their meeting was probably a significant moment in an insignificant time. Hm. This is a very deep song. Hope my impressions help.

Hooverphonic – Electro Shock Faders Lyrics 18 years ago
My first impression of this song was that it was about a night of drinking. "Sick of all this work, longing for a sinking." The words, bottle, blur, and 'perfect environment' added to that impression.

30 Seconds to Mars – I'll Attack Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree that this song could be about a drug addiction, especially because of the lines, "I won't suffer, be broken
Get tired, or wasted." However, it could also be about a relationship that the narrator is angry about. The song could be his argument, while his girlfiend turns her back on him.

Hooverphonic – Eden Lyrics 18 years ago
When I hear this, I picture the narrator of the song silently observing her old boyfriend. The two might have just broken or he might be at the grocery store with another woman. I feel like the lyrics are all in her mind, though, because of the phrase "Did I ever think of you, As my enemy." She's being retrospective, perhaps blaming herself for the failure of their relationship. The 'Eden' is the perfect relationship that the partner wanted, but that she kept them from.
