I agree with roomonfire07. This song seems like it's about drugs(mostly LSD). It was written around 1968-1969 which was the peak of psychedelic drug experimentation. Plus this song is very mentally stimulating when in a psychedelic state of mind :-) . Just my $0.02. |

From what I've heard, this song is about a male who is unhappy with his sex so he goes to get a sex change operation to become a woman. They drug him up and begin the operation but half way thru he wakes up and starts screaming. The doctor gets distracted and makes some sort of accident and kills the patient. Pretty distrubing but a great song. Definetly an underrated song by VU. |

This song is among my favorite Velvet Underground songs and as someone stated before I don't think it's completely about heroin; I think it's about all the shit in this world and all the reasons for him doing heroin. Very touching song that I think just about anyone can relate to at some time.

No no. The true meaning of the song is about one of the scientists who tested LSD in the 1930's. In his log, he wrote how his assitant had to calm him down because he believed he was posessed by the devil and thought his neighbor was a witch and that everyone was trying to kill him. Then once his assistant calmed him down, his "bad trip" ceased and he had a positive experience and saw geometric shapes when he closed his eyes and heard strange sounds. When he awoke the next morning, he wrote in his log that the world seemed as if it was newly created and that his breakfast was so extraordinary and pleasurable. That is what i believe the song is about :-) |

I, too, thought it was about Kurt Cobain until I bought the actual album. Underneath the lyrics in the booklet it says it is about a friend of the bands and that R.I.P stands for Rest.In.Pissedoffness. |
