King Crimson – The Night Watch Lyrics 16 years ago
The description by frijolito_ts is excellent, but I just wanted to add a few things.

The song has several different points of view that shift over the course of the time. The first three verses are from the point of view of an observer in an art museum at the present time, looking at the picture: "three hundred years have passed," "canvas dark with age." In the next two verses the point of view changes to the artist executing the painting: "smell of paint," "turn those faces all to me." The following verse shifts to the point of view of the actors in the painting itself, the members of the night watch. The last verse returns to a universal viewpoint which provides a broad view of the entire drama.

King Crimson – The Letters Lyrics 16 years ago
The four songs of the album "Islands" are four different perspectives on love. The first depicts romantic love, the second, this one, depicts vindictive and jealous love, the third, playful sexuality, and the final song depicts the universal love supporting everyone. Each one of these songs has a different prevailing emotional mood, with this song having the most intense expressions of emotion.

"The Letters" refers to the two letters or notes written in this song: the first being an evil and vindictive note written by the "other woman" having an affair with a married man, to the man's wife. The second letter is the suicide note written by the wife after she receives the first letter.

The first two lines indicate the evil nature of the first letter by the words "poison pen." The second verse indicates the wife's extreme emotional reaction to her husband's infidelity. The final two lines indicate the wife's death by her own hand.

The extremely strong emotions of the characters involved are depicted by the harsh and atonal guitar and sax solos in the recording.

King Crimson – Ladies Of The Road Lyrics 16 years ago
The four songs from the album "Islands" are four different perspectives on love. The first depicts romantic love, the second jealous love, the third, this one, depicts playful sexual and sensual love, and the last song depicts universal love.

This entire song is intended to be considered humorous. Although the situations may have actually occurred, they are described in a lighthearted way using many puns and double entendres, such as "feel your Fender" referring to the rock star's guitar or alternatively some unnamed body part. In spite of the obvious sexual connotations of almost every line, no explicit sexual terms are used. The closest it gets is the term "meat" in the last verse. In fact, each verse gets a little more explicit than the previous one. The last verse is a clear depiction of sexual activities with very little left to the imagination.

The words of the song as sung on the recording are very slightly different from the words on the album jacket; I believe this listing shows the album jacket poem, which is OK.

King Crimson – Islands Lyrics 16 years ago
The four songs of the album "Islands" are four different depictions or perspectives on love. The first depicts romantic love, the second jealous love, the third playful sexual love, and the last, this one, depicts universal love.

The first and second verses show a person alone represented by an island surrounded by water. The third verse depicts communications and interactions between that person and others. The chorus indicates that beneath the apparency of separateness, the islands are joined by universal love.

Cream – Tales Of Brave Ulysses Lyrics 18 years ago
I really like Durang0's comments above. I thought I mght add a little more details. Remember this song was written by Clapton, who was from Britain and a famous "ladies man."

1st verse (leaden winter, steamer, etc.): leaving Britain on vacation to Greek Islands or Riviera, ...

2nd verse: "sea" is a traditional female symbol, "sky" traditional male symbol. "mermaids": topless bathers on the beach, "white laced lips": coral reefs where you might be shipwrecked

3rd verse: more "sea" symbolism representing female sexuality, "deep blue ripples": seduction in both body and mind

4th verse: "tiny purple fishes": represents female sexual organs (taste, smell)

5th verse: "Aphrodite": goddess of love (as described by previous posters), "crimson shell": more symbolism of female sexual organs

Therefore a beautiful but very suggestive song of seduction.
