Between the Trees – A Time For Yohe Lyrics | 17 years ago |
^It's about Renee (Yohe being her last name). Her life and what she's been through is basically the initial spark for To Write Love On Her Arms. www.twloha.com |
Between the Trees – A Time For Yohe Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"We're still waiting for the fire Seeing smoke and waiting for the fire" These two lines could probably mean several different things. And I really liked what NJromance had to say. I always thought of it like this- You can't have smoke without the fire. And in this case, the fire could possibly symbolize life. So you see the smoke, no fire, but you know that there has to be that life giving fire because of the smoke. You know that this can't last for long, as you know the fire is near. You can still live. You can begin again. Heh. Hope that made some sense. =] |

Switchfoot – Underwater Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"Life is so short. Everyone is running out of time. Who can be trusted? We are all so human and fail each other so often. Every new day we face the same old problems; every new day hits us just the same. The girl in Underwater faces the dilemma of modern humanity. There's nothing to be in a world where nothing really matters. And besides she's tried so hard plenty of times. Without Christ as our foundation, we are thrown by waves of despair, swimming in a sea of hopelessness. She climbs down into the bottle, looking to drown her desperation in alcohol. She hides from the reality of life underwater, where she can forget about her burning needs. Underwater is a place to hide from the world. As Christians, we seek to be found in Christ, living in his love and truth. Sometimes however, we find ourselves seeking our fulfillment elsewhere: in relationship, in our jobs or even in acting out religion. Apart from Christ's foundation, we are living in fake reality, lukewarm and directionless, upside down, underwater." -Jon Foreman |
Switchfoot – The Loser Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"That's a fun song. It originally was a lot more Reggae and we had to kind of tone it down a little for the album. We came to the conclusion that we were white......very white. The song itself is about the upside down aspect of the kingdom of God, the Kingdom of Heaven. How the last will be first and the first will be last. Blessed are the people who are on the bottom because they're gonna be on top. That's what "The Loser" is about." -Jon Foreman |
Switchfoot – Poparazzi Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"That whole "get it this time" thing at the beginning of the song is from the demo . Chad was having another go, saying, "I'll get it this time!" when I hit record. But I thought it sounded pretty cool so I kept it. The "tune" bit was me practicing for the line, "tune for the poparazzi." Again, maybe artistic choice, maybe laziness! I like things like that though: they give albums personality" -Jon Foreman "We are surrounded by the noise of pop culture. Radio, TV, billboards, magazines: pop will never leave you alone. How we filter through all of it is extremely important. What will you give prime billing in the space between your ears? What are the tunes running around inside your head?" -Jon Foreman "This song is a lover's quarrel with pop culture. I'm not sure if this song contributes more to the solution or the problem, because I just can't get it out of my head." -Chad Butler |
Switchfoot – Lonely Nation Lyrics | 18 years ago |
quotes from Jon Foreman: "Or maybe I'm still trying to figure out this broken, beautiful planet- writing songs as a way of therapy in the hopes of a better understanding of this existence that we call life. Either way, the lonely struggle for meaning and truth in the postmodern world is a subject matter that I don't think I could ever exhaust." "I'd walk around near the back and just breathe in the loneliness masses of scared kids. I remember thinking how ironic it is that you have this generation of kids connected through Instant Messaging and text messages, yet people grow more and more lonely every day." |
Switchfoot – Living Is Simple Lyrics | 18 years ago |
all quotes from Jon Foreman- "The crazy circumstances around recording matched the context of the song exactly. The song is trying to express the tension between the amazing complexity of a life of grace and the simple faith to which we are called. The first verse is tongue in cheek; entropy and gravity represent the tougher aspects of life. And the life of a human is so much more complex than breathing." "In the contrast to the turmoil in the first verse we hear an angelic, churchy choir singing that "All shall be made well." Is this fiction? Could it be that our frantic, fallen world a simple salvation has come?" "We wanted to produce the song in a way that matched the content: busy and complex moments standing juxtaposed against the simpler, naked parts. The end is the same: simple melodies breaking down and falling apart and getting distorted until... ahhhh! a simple chord to end it. The footsteps are to signify completion. This was the last song recorded for the project and we knew that it was going to be the last one on the CD so we gave the whole thing a bit of closure." |
Switchfoot – Innocence Again Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"Somehow, all the songs I write to others, I ended up singing to myself sooner or later. This is no different and I end up with the question, "who will it be?" This song is a sister of "I Dare You To Move." Both songs are really driving at the same point: if God's redemptive movement is at work around us, we are called to respond. Indeed, whether we act or not, we have made a response either way" -Jon Foreman 'Grace is high AND low.' The simplicity of that truth always speaks to me. This is the nature of God's grace. This is found in the highs and the lows on the peaks and in the valleys. This truth is so difficult to accept in it's entirety: that fools like us have been given innocence again.' -Tim Foreman "Jon and I have talked before about how impossible it is to share the truth of God's grace in a three-minute pop song, to me this one comes close to capture the essence of it." -Chad Butler |
Switchfoot – Incomplete Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"And so the stage of the modern world is set. Now lets meet the cast. We are first introduced to an ordinary citizen, perhaps much like yourself. He starts his day just like you. After washing his face, he has a look in the mirror, a quick bowl of cereal and then he's off to work. Fighting the traffic, he's sick of his current state of being, he's tired of living just to exist. No missing gears. Incomplete. Incomplete! We are incomplete on our own. We are the missing people when we live inside of ourselves and inside of our doubts. There must be a loss of "incompleteness" in the process of becoming whole. "Whomever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for Me will find it."- Jon Foreman |
Switchfoot – I Turn Everything Over Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"Much of our world is built upon the philosophy that we can find significance and contentment inside of ourselves and our surroundings. Yet we've all heard the rumors that even after achieving these ends, we will not be content. What if the world around us is flawed? What if we are flawed? What if Christ is our only hope? What if the rumors are true?" -Jon Foreman |
Switchfoot – Golden Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"We are lonely souls in the land of broken hearts, far from home but this is where the story begins. And yes, you are the protagonist, you are the hero and the villain, the prince and the pauper and the clown all in one. So where do things head from here? well, that's your call... I remember drew laying down his line over top of the verses, this mellow, ethereal roof over top of the song." -Jon Foreman |
Switchfoot – Don't Be There Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"I find that poetry and music are especially effective mediums in which to convey my feelings. Poetic devices can give us the eyes and heart of another, submerging us in the ocean of a foreign experience. In a song we can travel to far-away lands, catch our breath on the highest peak and feel our way across the forest floor. Music and poetry can act as jet engines for our emotions; I love these arts for the journey on which they take us. 'Don't Be There' is a song which began with an emotion and an acoustic guitar. I think that these two elements remained intact in this song. Obviously, the acoustic guitar is a prominent feature, but the melancholy mood that I was in when I picked up the guitar that day is evident was well. 'Don't Be There' was inspired by a bittersweet period in my life when I was growing further apart from a dear friend of mine. I will always treasure our friendship; I will never forget the beautiful memories. Yet, youth can be synonymous with change as we begin to learn and discover and experience life more and more. My friend and I had changed since we met, and our distance hurt both of us. 'Don't Be There' is built around the conflicting desires that I had concerning this friendship?" -Jon Foreman |
Switchfoot – Company Car Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"Some songs are rewritten 43 times (take 'New Way To Be Human' for example); others seem to write themselves. This song wrote itself in about an hour. It is a caricature of the way I see L.A. Rich, fast talking executives drive around in sporty cars. You see them walk by smoking a Cuban cigar, and you wonder, 'What is their world like? What is life all about for them?' This is a cartoon of what that world looks like to me. This is my grandparents favorite song on the album, so it must be all right!"- Jon Foreman |
Switchfoot – Easier Than Love Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"Another song inspired by irony or paradox or perhaps sheer confusion. How is it that one of the most meaningful, intimate moments in a human's life is now used to sell beverages or magazines or auto parts? And indeed, sex sells. It's no wonder that sex is easier than love, because love is extremely difficult, almost impossible at times. I have no fingers to point, my friends, I'm simply stating the obvious and I love screaming this one out. This one was inspired by the Shins- a great band with great production elements. In many ways, Romey really made this one come alive." -Jon Foreman "That song is about how one of the most beautiful intimate moments in a human's life is used to sell a can of beer or auto parts. Sex is easier than love." -Jon Foreman |
Switchfoot – Edge of My Seat Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"Love can do crazy things. Love spins our head, and suddenly the world is fresh and exciting: ?life on the movie screen.' I'm so glad God created us with the capability for friendship with Him and others. I'm thankful for all the incredible components of life-like sunsets, a smile, falling in love. I wrote this song when the world around me was bigger than life and I was excited to see what happened next. I was sitting on the Edge of My Seat." -Jon Foreman |

Switchfoot – Betrayal Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Okay. Someone on the main boards asked if this would be on the next cd. Here's Jon's reply: " Hi tyler, How are things? I think the song you're talking about is betrayal, a song I wrote with my friend sean watkins. He's an incredible music man who plays in an amazing band called Nickle Creek. It's a song about... er, betrayal? Sadly, I don't think it's going to be on this record. We hope to find a spot for the song though. we'll see. Glad you dig it, amigo. see you manana. jon" |
Switchfoot – Awakening Lyrics | 18 years ago |
And this song will be on the next album. : D |
Switchfoot – Poparazzi Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"This song goes out to the Backstreet Boys. This song goes out to NSYNC. This song goes out to Mandy Moore." That should sum it up for you. |
Switchfoot – Politicians Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"A lot of people thought that this song is anti. This is not anti-US, this is not anti-Bush, it's not anti-humanity. For me this is a song that just recognizes that fact that as long as theres a war right in here [points to chest], theres going to be a war everywhere else. In that way I think that it's a really hopeful song. It's not anti anything at all, really. " -Jon music psycho, most people would want a song that speaks the truth, right? well, if any song speaks the truth (like all of switchfoot's) it will most likely be a little depressing, seeing as how we live in a depressing world. you can have their songs, or listen to ones that talk about getting dumped for the 15th time. |
Switchfoot – Twenty-Four Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Also, dont take all of Jon's (and sometimes the help of Tim) writing literally. He uses symbolism in a lot of songs, too. |
Switchfoot – Spirit Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song has never been released on one of their own cds. This is one of those songs they'll record for a compilation cd. I think it's actually made it on to another cd or two other than X Worship 06. |
Switchfoot – Betrayal Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Here is a quote from Jon when he played Betrayal for the underground lounge. "I'm a big Johnny Cash fan and so this is kind of my nod to that. My attempt to right a good song about murder." I believe Jon also mentioned somewhere else that this won't be on the upcoming album. |
Switchfoot – Oh! Gravity. Lyrics | 18 years ago |
heres the lyrics i got from the main boards- In the back store In the boulevard In the backseat Of a parked car By the liquor store With the steel I Take the symphony To the next night In the same town As the next car In the same zone As the liquor store By the freeway Where the headlight Takes the symphony To the next night Oh gravity Why cant we seem to keep it together? Seems you're my enemy Why can't we Seem to keep it together? In the backroom Of the pentagon Is a thin man With the line drawn With the red jaw And the red vibe With the headlight On the next night [chorus x1] What tragedy Why can't we seem to keep it together? Oh, gravity Why can't we seem to pull it together? In the fallout, I found out Found out the high points get me through Amended, connected Amended the high points getting me through Oh gravity Why can’t we seem to keep it together? Oh gravity Why can’t we seem to pull it together? What tragedy Why can’t we seem to keep it together? Oh gravity Why can’t we seem to pull it together now? Lalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalala Pull it together. ------ in an interview with jon on a radio station he sang this for the first time. he also told a little about the song. "it's the idea that we as human beings could learn a little something from gravity, the attraction between two objects." jon says something else, but i cant understand it. so this gives you the general meaning. |
Switchfoot – Good Night Punk Lyrics | 18 years ago |
someone asked jon what this song meant. he said that its about the abolition of genres. so i guess it goes along with the whole we are one theme. |
