Interpol – PDA Lyrics 17 years ago
I have always thought that the lyrics are about someone with multiple personalities, and he is talking to an alter ego of his (or maybe even more of them).

The couches bit really makes sense when you think of insanity.

But I like some of the other interpretations I`ve read here as well.. the date rape theory really does work; though I don`t personally subscribe to it, the lyrics certainly make sense if you look at them that way.

Urma – Buy Me With a Coffee Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is a great tribute to the simple things in life. Overthinking and disecting everything leaves little room for actually enjoying yourself.

I think it`s obvious that the song is about a relationship. A sexual interpretation probably fits best: "breathe with me and feel", "buy me with a coffee". A little less conversation, a little more action. :D

Kasabian – Me Plus One Lyrics 17 years ago
The description of the girl and contact between them sounds like it`s part of a dream or maybe a hallucination. At least the Alice in Wonderland reference (a white rabbit that takes someone away) indicates that.

KT Tunstall – Other Side Of The World Lyrics 17 years ago
Sorry to disagree with most people here but to me 'the other side of the world' is a metaphor for a couple that has drifted apart with time. I think that she wouldn`t have picked the only obvious line in the song for the title. But I guess it all comes down to which meaning you can relate to best.

The Feeling – Sewn Lyrics 18 years ago
I see this more like a dialogue between a guy and a girl. Basically the girl is saying "don`t be such a wuss" and the guy replies "but you made me the wuss I am". :D

Does anyone know whether the violin bit at the beginning is written for this particular song, or taken from somewhere else? It sounds awfully familiar to me but I can`t really pinpoint it..

Franz Ferdinand – Eleanor, Put Your Boots On Lyrics 18 years ago
This is such a sweet song. When I listen to it I always imagine a scene where Eleanor hears it for the first time ever on the radio and runs off to Europe to see Alex. :)

Guillemots – madeup love song #43 Lyrics 18 years ago
I tend to see this song as criticism towards all the made up love songs invading the charts nowadays. The lyrics are shallow (poetry in empty coke cans), fake (majesty in burnt out caravans) and cold (symmetry in your northern grin). The "refill litter bin" is a metaphor for the mainstream music stage.

Also, the parts that say "I love you", "I don`t think you care", "I can`t believe you care" make up the perfect pop love song lyrics. Boy meets girl, boy falls in love, girl doesn`t care, out of the blue girl notices boy, girl falls in love with boy. Happy ending, of course.

I don`t really get the "sparks and shining dragons" bit. Unless it`s nonsense and goes to show that no matter how messed up a love song lyrics are, it still has a good chance to climb up the chart.

Bright Eyes – First Day of My Life Lyrics 18 years ago
Bakerhunter, pretty interesting theory. Though you have the facts on your side, I prefer to believe the feeling of love and happiness is genuine.

This is one of the songs you listen to, like a lot, and at some point in the future you find yourself in that exact situation and get to understand and love it. And feel it.

This is the first day of my life.

Dido – Hunter Lyrics 18 years ago
I disagree that it`s a father figure, because the man is a "king" and she is the "queen".

"For this crown you`ve placed upon my head, it feels too heavy now"
How I can relate to this..
It`s the situation when your lover sees you as "the one", and thinks you are perfect. Instead of satisfaction, you feel the constant pressure of living up to this standard, and avoid disappointing your partner. It gets tiring.

"And I don't know what to say to you, but I smile anyhow"
So, so sad.. When there`s nothing to complain about, when your relationship is perfect and everything falls into place, you still find yourself unhappy at times. What can you say to the happy person beside you? He couldn`t understand you; not even you understand yourself.

The Libertines – Albion Lyrics 18 years ago
This is why I want to move to the UK some time in the distant future.

"talk over
gin in teacups and
leaves on the lawn"

The most beautiful lyrics are the simplest ones. They say so little, yet they say everything.

Placebo – Infra-Red Lyrics 18 years ago
If you`re talking about famous references in the lyrics, if I`m not mistaken, "So I came down to wish you an unhappy birthday" is a reference to The Smiths` "Unhappy birthday".

Morrissey – First Of The Gang To Die Lyrics 18 years ago
I totally agree with Clark`s interpretation.

"You have never been in love,
Until you've seen sunlight thrown
over smashed human bones"

Death is an alegory for marriage. Indeed, marriage is death of passion, death of emotion, death of individuality. The image of smashed human bone inspires fear and disgust, just like the thought of marriage does. But when you are able to see beauty in this horrendous picture ("you've seen the sunlight thrown"), you know you are really in love.

Gorgeous song.

The Verve – Lucky Man Lyrics 18 years ago
I totally agree with AngelDust. The lyrics to this tune simply state that nothing is impossible to the human mind. You don`t need anybody but yourself to make you happy. However, this is a power that most people have no control over, and the singer expresses his joy to be one of the select few who truly know and enjoy themselves.

Kate Bush – Babooshka Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is how about people take things for granted and, as soon as the 'novelty' of the good things they have wears off, forget how valuable they really are. Be this a friend, a lover, family, or material possessions such as a car or a house perhaps, human nature is to inevitably get bored of what they have and go after something else. It may be identical to what they once had, but it looks better just because it`s 'painted new'.

Based on this principle, the woman in the song 'paints herself new', to test her husband`s reaction.

I see your point, Robbie, however this /is/ songmeanings, so it`s a site for commenting lyrics as well.

I love this song and my interpretation of it would be the exact same one as Jerico`s. I think some people only hear what they want to hear in the song. Give me three minutes and a song of your choice, and I will interpret the lyrics as being about homosexuality/ drug abuse/ whatever you like. As long as it`s not 'oozing' gayness, such as Michael, for instance, it most probably is not about a relationship between two boys.

Of course, no interpretation of some lyrics is wrong. :) It all depends on how close you want to get to understanding the artist`s point of view, but still maintaining your own original perspective on things.

Arctic Monkeys – A Certain Romance Lyrics 18 years ago

i think this band is one of the most over rated in the indie scene, the lead singers voice adds nothing to the mindless guitar riffs, this is the only half decent song
----

I`ll skip the "this is your opinion and you are entitled to it" part just this once. :3 I`m not saying the Monkeys are anywhere near exceptional, but, for a debut album, theirs is pretty darn good.

The one thing I don`t understand is why pick on them when there`s a whole lot of other bands who`re very popular but have nothing near a half decent song. If you don`t think liking the Monkeys makes you cooler, why should disliking them do?

Arctic Monkeys – The View from the Afternoon Lyrics 18 years ago
The way I see it, this song isn`t necessarily about a relationship. I think it describes the music scene, and it pretty much sends out a message about what the Monkeys are trying to do. (thus they placed it at the beginning of the album)

"Anticipation has a habit to set you up
For disappointment in evening entertainment"
You`re looking forward to a gig, but the artists don`t live up to your expectations (for a reason or another).

"But tonight there'll be some love"
Seein the Monkeys on stage, they really pour their heart into their music. They play with a passion.

"And there’s verse and chapter sat in her inbox"
This is music that doesn`t really get through you.. the lyrics, catchy or witty as they may be, just "sit" there in your head, not going through to your heart.

If you`ve seen the video, you`ll understand why I see the song this way. It focuses around a young man who plays the drums with such a passion, that his hands start bleeding, and not even then does he stop.

The Coral – In the Morning Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, the morning is the bright future we`re all hoping for.
"Make plans to be leaving, in the morning"
"Out of the dark and into the light
When the morning comes I will be alright"

It sounds like sort of a desire to escape the daily routine ("And all this time I've watched it change, but it's still the same").

Pretty song, catchy too. :) I like it.

Battle – Demons Lyrics 18 years ago
Oh, and I didn`t notice, there`s a slight correction I`d like to make. (a line of the song is missing)

"I am just the same as you,
I've spent a lifetime in a room,
I’ve spent a lifetime in a chair,
I've sat naked in a chair.
I’ve thrown stones at passing cars.
It was funny. Ha! Ha! Ha!"

Battle – Demons Lyrics 18 years ago
I can`t believe nobody has yet commented on this absolutely gorgeous song.

To me this song is about living life to your heart`s content, being passionate about the things you like, even if they are dull ("spent a lifetime in a room") or silly ("thrown stones at passing cars"). You feel "lonely" and "pointless" when the people around you fail to understand. You see the lack of desire to live in everyone around you ("stick a fork into your side, just to make sure you`re alive").

You try to get through to them ("make my hand a ghost to put it in your head"), but realising your efforts are useless, as the conclusion of the song is that they will never open their eyes and see how shallow they are ("why can`t you say" -> "you`ll never say" -> "just say").

The sense of despair in this song is something like "If you can`t beat them, join them.". On some level, you want to be just like everyone else, not having to fight with your "demons" every single day:
"Yes, I need some common sense
(I really wasn't born with it),
Shoot me in the face and make these demons dissipate."

I absolutely adore this song as I can definitely relate. I`ve spent quite a chunk of my life feeling exactly like that. Seeing as it`s in the past, the song has lost a tiny bit of its magic, but I still love it to pieces. If you haven`t yet downloaded it, take my advice: do it.

PS: If anyone has any info on the band Battle (websites, release dates etc.) I`d be forever grateful if you`d share. Thanks. :)

The Kooks – Naive Lyrics 18 years ago
I don`t like stating the obvious, as I think the meaning of the lyrics is pretty clear. I just want to speak about my favourite part of the song.

"Such an ugly thing
Someone so beautiful"

I think the contrast in the lyrics is absolutely gorgeous. Listen to the lead singer`s voice when he sings this part - it seems to me as if he is actually feeling what he says. It just.. feels so real. You can see the picture painted with words even if you have never lived a similar experience.

Franz Ferdinand – Darts Of Pleasure Lyrics 18 years ago
---
In a feature run by NME, Alex Kapranos said this song was about seduction, and how words can be the "best way of seducing anyone".
---

I`m particularly hung up on what BlueOyster said. Yes, this song can well be interpreted as a sexual one, but I tend to lean towards another approach.

I think it`s about the passion of talking.

"You can feel my lips undress your eyes" - His words are eye-openers.

"I know that you will surrender
I want this fantastic passion
We'll have fantastic passion" - It`s about convinving the other person to literally let go and start speaking passionately.

"Words of love and words so leisured
Words of poisoned darts of pleasure
Died and so you died" - This represents silence, the death of words at the end. Communication is the only way we can get across to another human being. When we are done speaking (either verbally or non-verbally) it is just like we cease to exist.

I must admit I`m fairly biased on this interpretation, but it`s the way I see it at this time.

Franz Ferdinand – The Fallen Lyrics 18 years ago
"I need a bit of black and blue to be a rotation"

I think this part is about being a martyr. The way I see it, if the bible would be all about the wonders and good deeds that jesus did, it would have never had this impact on the world. It`s the pain and sufferings of christ as a human being that play the most significant role in people`s faith.

Shortly put, in order to become eternal ("to be a rotation"), you need to suffer VISIBLY ("a bit of black and blue"=bruises).
