The Gaslight Anthem – Stay Lucky Lyrics 14 years ago
This pretty much sounds like this song is about how Brian Fallon had writer's block when writing this album. It was easier to write songs when he was young, but then he felt as though he might "explode inside". He realised that once he stopped trying so hard the words came to him ("Stop pacing around and waiting for some moment that might never arrive").

Kerrang! magazine said that the Manhatten line comes from the e-mail which their guy sent to the band when they first heard of them and wanted to meet them.

No more comments??? I love this song, especially the line:

"And tonight for the first time, it felt good to be alive"

I've been feeling that way a lot recently, life is good.

I always skip to this on my MP3 when I get on the bus in my local city centre, in Norwich.

"Take a ride to Charing Cross, join the masses as they shop...their lives away".

I change Charling Cross to Chapelfield in my head, just to make it a bit more local to me.

Lostalone – Standing on the ruin of a beautiful empire Lyrics 16 years ago
Still got the place to myself I see...from what I've heard, Steven Battelle wrote this song whilst in Rome, hence he was "standing on the ruin of a beautiful empire" at the time. Now, I know he went on an epic journey all over the place, and it seems like he arrived at the end of the journey in Rome (does the album go in chronological order of Battelle's journey? His journey attempting to say no to the world?) and he seems to be in a reflective mood, like he's reached the end of his journey and has decided to start LostAlone of the back of the songs he's written, "This is the road, the path that I chose". Yeah, he got to Rome, and decided the time was right for LostAlone and he decided there and then that that was what he wanted to do and he's never gonna fall asleep and all that again. There are a lot of references to music like prose, rhyme, musical fracture, melodically capture etc so it seems like he decided what he wanted to do with his life and the band in Rome.

Amazing.

Also The Cribs song "Mirror Kissers".

It's okay when you say you see people like those described in this song, it's hard when people you thought you knew turn into them right in front of you.

Say Anything – Admit It!!! Lyrics 16 years ago
This song makes me so angry, but in a good way. It's easily one of my favourite songs of all time, even more so since I've started University. On one side you've got a bunch of dumb, mainstream idiots who listen to Radio 1 and think going to shitty clubs and drinking all the time is heaven and on the other side you've wannabe bohemian arseholes who think they're so fucking cool because they wear skinny jeans or brown shoes. This song is about the latter though. I see these types of people everywhere, people who dress all retro and sit around smoking weed and pretending they know something about anything. They're hypocritical, arrogant, hipsters who care more about their image than anything else, the kind who go out of their way to be different. The kids who fit into the middle ground are the ones who are the real misfits. "I'm proud of my life and the things that I have done, proud of myself, and the loner I've become".

For further scenester bashing, see The Cribs songs "Hey Scenesters!" and "The Wrong Way to Be".

Lostalone – Lost Alone Lyrics 16 years ago
This is amazing, first comment for this song, first comment for the band. All their songs are amazing, the band is amazing, Steven Battelle's lyrics are amazing, end of discussion.

I reckon this is about the time when Steven Battelle (songwriter/lead singer/guitarist) went crazy before he formed the band. He went off all over the UK just walking around like Frodo Baggins as he once described it. I'm not sure what he was so upset about though but this makes it sound like he has had women problems ("They will never love you like I do" and "You're a gift and you're a curse")

"They say Steve you're screaming in the middle of the night" is most likely the reaction of those close to him of his madness and he just wanted out "so paint me a mirror through which I can crawl".

Biffy Clyro – As Dust Dances Lyrics 16 years ago
Maybe I'm getting nostalgic too quickly, but this song takes me right back to last summer, cruising in my small and crappy car through the city as the sun sets after many awesome days hanging out with my friends during our last summer together, it always felt like "such a lonely ride".

Also, I got Puzzle at the same time I got The White Stripe's Icky Thump album, so I can't listen to the first line, "There's a man on the corner selling dozens of bones" without adding in my head "His name is Jack White" because of their song Rag & Bone. Rag & Bone men don't even sell bones!

Nine Black Alps – Bitter End Lyrics 16 years ago
I can't believe this has no comments. This is, dare I say, a very sweet song. The chorus relates exactly to me and my best (female) friend, and the first verse describes her perfectly. I hope we can be friends to the bitter end. I think it may have been written with a similar theme in mind, about two best friends who are utterly hopeless.

"I tried to find someone who cares,
it never gets you anywhere."

Sam speaks the absolute truth here. Sometimes it feels like no matter how much you look for someone who really cares about you but it feels like no one gives a toss.

So maybe not a lot like most of Everything Is, but definately a beautiful song and one that means a lot to me.

Million Dead – Charlie And The Propaganda Myth Machine Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm guessing the McDonalds line is to do with the idea that vaccinations are given to prevent people from getting something. In this case, McDonalds is given to kids to try and prevent them from seeing the world from what is really is. As long as they have a Happy Meal, they'll never know what the world is really like and accept it for what they see. This song makes me feel bad for liking chocolate and Roal Dahl.

I was just looking at my flatmate's copy of Cosmopolitan and it's a load of crap! I look at those type of magazines and think, "Does anyone actually give a stuff about any of this?". It made me think of this song.

On the subject of seeing NBA live, I've saw them in Nottingham this year and at Leeds Festival, and I have a ticket to see them in Norwich and they've bloody cancelled to play with the Kaiser Chiefs in London! Disgraceful. They say they'll come back at some point though.

Foo Fighters – Cheer Up, Boys (Your Make Up Is Running) Lyrics 16 years ago
This is what Dave Grohl said in Kerrang! about this song:

"People keep saying this is aimed at the emo brigade. Come on now, don't be so sensitive! I'd hate to offend anyone because it's all meant to be in good fun. The title actually has nothing to do with the song; it was a working title that stuck because we thought it was funny. Whenever a genre of music gets labelled and then becomes a parody of itself I think it's a shame, though. That's something the title alludes to."

Looking at the lyrics, I can't see what this song has to do with "emo" (whatever that is) at all.

When did I write that last comment? Well about a week later I went to the park with one of my best friends and we were completely alone. She wrote our initials on the bench with the word "world" after them and I put this song on and broke down crying in her arms. I confessed to her that I didn't want to go to Uni because I had such a good life in my hometown with my friends. Two weeks after that I'm completely on my own 100 miles away and it still hurts.

Angels and Airwaves – It Hurts Lyrics 16 years ago
Sounds to me like it's about a girl who's cheating on her boyfriend with a guy who's really just a friend. It sounds like it's all said from the second guy's point of view.

"It hurts
Is this what you want? Cause everybody acts without a clue."
He asks her if she really wants to cheat on her boyfriend because everyone goes along not really knowing what they want.

"Every little kiss and grin you gave, was just a little bullshit I saw through."
She's been flirting with him but he tried to see past it.

"The alcohol is scented with your breath, you're always all done up just to be used,
I'm waiting for excuses that deceive, I'll meet you in the back to see them through."
She got drunk and she's done up really tarted ready to be used by anyone who might want to take advantage of her. It seems like they go back and do the deed.

"How did I let her inside, we're drippin' of sweat, I'm feelin' alright, her lips were the last thing touched tonight,
Your best friend is not your girlfriend. It hurts"
So they have sex and the guy asks himself how he let it happen. They're dripping with sweat from the sex but he feels good about it. She then does the "shh" thing people do when they put their finger to the lips and he realises that even if they are best friends they can never be boyfriend and girlfriend and it hurts.

"Are you out of your mind, you dug yourself into a liar's hole,"
She then starts lieing to her boyfriend about what happened and the lies just go on and on.

"You made a little spark to live inside, it's now a fuckin fire out of control."
The fire represents the lies which the girl starts to keep their secret but they go on and get out of contol.

"And when the morning comes you'll act surprised, And when the word gets out it will get old, And everyday you'll try and live your life, and every little scandal will unfold."
Her boyfriend eventually finds out when the word gets out and she tries to deny it and they carry on with their lives and scandals just carry on.

"How did I let her inside? We're drippin' of sweat. I'm feelin' alright. Her lips were the last thing touched tonight
Your best friend is not your girlfriend. Sherrie do you want it, Sherrie I want it too"
Maybe they do it again. And she's called Sherie and the guy asks her if she wants to go through with it and she says she does and he does it.

"How did I let her inside? We're drippin' of sweat
I'm feelin' alright, her lips were the last thing touched tonight.

Your best friend is not your girlfriend. It hurts
Your best friend is not your girlfriend. It hurts
Your best friend is not your girlfriend"
And repeat for emphasis.

That's how I see it anyway.

Nine Black Alps – Unsatisfied Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is amazing. It's like you can feel Sam's pain through the song. The way he sings it is just so emotional, like there's something not right in his life or something missing. He doesn't know what it is and he doesn't want to be stuck in a dream world and no matter what he does he's unsatisfied with the world. I've seen Nine Black Alps live twice already this year in Nottingham and at Leeds Festival and I'm off to see them for a third time in Norwich, they're just so amazing.

So amazing it hurts. I love this song, they played it when I saw them at Leeds Festival.

"Are you going to live your life wondering, standing in the back, looking around?" I hope not.

"Are you going to waste your time thinking, how you've grown up, or how you missed out?" I missed out on a lot but I don't want to spend all my time thinking about it, and I feel really old and grown up.

Basically it's all good and makes me think, "Yep, I can relate to that".

I couldn't have put it any better than RazorandTie, I just finished school and me and all my friends are going to University soon. I've basically been listening to this and Lostprophets' Last Summer all summer because they have the same sort of message behind them. Or at least that's what I think.

"I fall asleep with my friends around me", yep, done that a few times.

"Don't it feel like sunshine afterall? The world we loved forever gone. We're only just as happy as everyone else seems to think we are" makes me feel at one with the world.

This song is amazing! The video has had a big impact on what I think it's about, about leaving school and getting out of your home town without your parents in your life. This I can totally relate to as I have just finished school and everyone I've spoken to has been like "Oh yeah, I can't wait to get out of Lincoln (our home town" and everyone is going to Uni. "Can we take a ride? Get out of this place while we still have time" hell yeah. Oddly enough though the DJ at our prom didn't bother playing any slow songs at the end of the night.

The Enemy – It's Not OK Lyrics 17 years ago
The Enemy have gone on a lot about this song. They say its about the fact that it's not ok to be a slave to the system working all the time for a pittance for "a man in a tie". They say it's better to brake away from all that and to try and be special and make a difference, which is why they're in a band. The Enemy talk about how big faceless companies come along to places like Coventry where they live, give people jobs only to shut down and leave people unemployed. Basically they reckon it's not ok to work your whole life and forget to live.

Lostprophets – Rooftops Lyrics 17 years ago
Okay, maybe this is an obscure link, what with Lostprophets being Welsh and everything, but judging by the time this song came out (early June '06) this song could have been used for England's anthem for the World Cup.

"Will we make our mark this time? Well we always say we try." England always go on about how they're gonna win the World Cup but they never manage it. Replace "rooftops" with "terraces" ("Standing on the terraces everybody scream your heart out").

They played this song live at Leeds on 7/12/06 and I was there. Ian Watkins gave the crowd the choice between this and "Five is a Four Letter Word" by getting Lee Gaze to play the intros to each song. I'm sure the crowd shouted for "Five..." but I wanted this one and they played it. That gave me the opportunity to get right near the front because hardly anyone knew this song. It's class though, make me sad when I think of the summer, especially during these dark winter nights.
