I mostly agree with you musicmax. I think she knows she is more than an occasional drinker, though, as she has said "The problem isn't exaggerated. I'm a terrible drunk." and (when asked how she injured her hand) "I probably walked around the block trying to get to the hotel and fell. I have no idea. I hate that. The blackouts. Happens too often." |

I definitely agree with tapies24. I think the speaker is bitter and thinking about things, like ways to get back at the ex. He's really angry about the break-up, but has at least accepted that it's over. |

I think it's about being depressed and trying to convince yourself that this will be the year everything comes together like you always thought it would. It seems, though, by the end of the song, the speaker has given up hope and makes a "grand departure from a world getting way too small" in a car accident. The last chorus seems ironic almost. |

I agree with what seems to be the general opinion on this song. The upbeat tempo can give the feel that this song is lighthearted, but it has a deeper, more serious meaning. This is not the first time something like that has happened because "it's no surprise." The song could, I guess, be directed towards anyone in his life who was affected by his actions, though it feels like it's to a girlfriend. He doesn't yet have a huge problem, just "every now and then." |
