John Mayer – No Such Thing Lyrics 17 years ago
I should say that people who lived life on their own terms AFTER high school will totally get this song.

John Mayer – No Such Thing Lyrics 17 years ago
If this song existed when I was graduating from high school I would make it our theme song - that or "I hope you dance".

People whose lives began AFTER high school will totally get this song.

People who felt they could not break out of their shell while in high school will totally get this song.

People who felt pigeon-holed during high school will totally get this song.

INXS – Pretty Vegas Lyrics 17 years ago
I never saw the Rock Star show. Even so, when I heard this song for the first time, I pegged it as INXS. I knew the lead was not Hutchence, but his spirit was clearly on the songwriter's mind.

I don't know what the lyrics are all about, but I don't think they play any significant role in the song.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Name Lyrics 17 years ago
There is a heaviness to this song, in both the music and the lyrics. It's not a song that raises one out of the depths of despair. While it touches a raw emotional nerve that may be different from person to person, the effect is about the same.

If you can find regrets in your life, then you will be deeply moved by this song.

James Blunt – You're Beautiful Lyrics 18 years ago
"Fuck you all you sad tossers/losers who insult Him. SIR/KNIGHT JAMES BLUNT is a GOD...you jealous pieces of shit." Well said Loose Tongue. It is about time we saw the pure cheerleader in you come out.

This song is art, so we are all entitled to our opinion about this art, even if it is in the same class as an artistic display of used tampons. When I hear this song, I am reminded of fingernails being drawn across a blackboard. Even someone who could sing cannot salvage this art since even a voice like that of Nat King Cole could not raise the lyrics above their intrinsic mediocrity.

But then again, James Blunt is probably filthy rich from his lacklustre work and a REAL poet like Leonard Cohen is a living pauper. Blunt is so fortunate that the popular masses eat up such substandard drivel.

Jennifer Warnes – Ain't No Cure for Love Lyrics 18 years ago
If you've ever been in a relationship gone wrong then you can feel the emotion of Cohen's lyrics in the depths of your soul. I love the way Jennifer Warnes interprets Cohen and the way her voice just makes the hurt feel so much more intense. It's my favourite track in Warnes' "Famous Blue Raincoat" CD.

Michal – This Time The Dream's On Me Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the line "It won't be far" is actually "It would be fun". The latter actually rhymes with the next line as I hear it when Ella Fitzgerald sings it.

Typos aside, this song is about a person who fantasizes about a relationship she believes she can never have.

The Association – Cherish Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a song about a guy who, for some reason, is afraid to reveal his feelings to his love interest. No where in this song do we actually learn why he is afraid, but it doesn't matter. It's a song that many people can relate to, because many of us have experienced feelings that we could not reveal to the object of those feelings.

John Lennon – Woman Lyrics 18 years ago
One of the most beautiful love songs written in the pop era. I remember what I was doing when I learned that Lennon was murdered. This song was released not long afterwards. At the time I didn't think much of the song (I was only 13), but as I grew older I better understood its meaning.

It is sad to realize that a great poet was silenced when he had so much more to say to us.

James Blunt – You're Beautiful Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is SO lame it makes me want to puke. But it correctly describes people who whine about something they will never have the guts to act upon. Here's my interpretation of the worst lyric ever written:

And there's nothing I will do
Though I want to be with you.

For those who take action in their lives, here is your lyric:

And there's something I will do
'Cause I want to be with you.

Simple Minds – Alive And Kicking Lyrics 18 years ago
The song is about the relationship Christians have with God. No matter how far a believer strays, God will be with that person.

Also listen to Sanctify Yourself. It has religious connotations as well. Both songs have made me wonder through these years if Simple Minds was a Christian "rock" group.

Sting – Saint Augustine In Hell Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is irreverent and makes me smile whenever I hear it.

The CD from which this song comes contains other songs in weird time signatures - 7/4 in particular. Have a listen to "Seven Days" or "Love is Stronger than Justice" - you'll hear what I mean.

Roxy Music – More Than This Lyrics 18 years ago
The music and the lyrics are inseparable. But my favourite part of the song is the acoustical ending. It just carries me away every time I hear it, like the sea on the tide.

Carly Simon – Anticipation Lyrics 18 years ago
Yes, one of my all time favourites from Carly Simon.

Did you know that Heinz co-opted this song in the 1970s and used it in a ketchup commercial? Brutal!

Tal Bachman – She's So High Lyrics 18 years ago
Ok...

The guy in this song has put his crush on this uber-pedestal because he is pretty insecure. When you put someone on a pedestal, that person seems all the more beautiful and unattainable. His insecurity becomes apparent when, to his anxious delight, she tells him that she likes him ("somehow I can't believe / that anything should happen").

When I was in high school I thought this way about a particular friend. As the years went on I took her down from that pedestal in my mind, never dated her, but we stayed good friends for over 20 years. In reality, we would have been utterly incompatible :-)

Billy Joel – A Matter Of Trust Lyrics 18 years ago
A guy is proposing to his girl. He is persuading her to go for it in the face of her fear of getting burned. He argues that the trust they have in each other should be reason enough to "go the distance". One can infer that "the distance" is sex, but I think it is marriage. Trust will outlast all of the other kinds of love he mentions and therefore will give them a strong foundation for a successful marriage.
