The Books – Smells Like Content Lyrics

I doubt that they had this in mind, but I'm writing a paper for a short story class, and this song is in my head because balance, repetition, composition, and mirrors are definitely all motifs in John Barth's Lost in the Funhouse. |

I don't think it's "Blowin' in the Wind." There are a lot of parts that sound like "Subterranean Homesick Blues," but also a lot that don't... I want to figure this out really badly! |

damn, this is so simply yet beautifully put. what really sets humans apart from nature is our hatefulness. nature is powerful and sometimes frightening but innocent. |

The second verse really supports the above interpretation, I think. It also seems to be consistent with "Some Sweet Day" later on the album. |

Bright Eyes – Kathy with a K's Song Lyrics

there's a simon and garfunkel song called "kathy's song" - i've kind of assumed that that's where the title comes from, but it could just be a coincidence.
anyway, i really love this song. it makes me so...happy-sad, in that honest way. "kathy's song" is really lovely and nice too. |

The earlier version, "One Foot in Front of the Other", is on the Saddle Creek 50 compilation. It's great. Buy it.
The Bush idea is interesting...but I don't buy it either. Bush wasn't 22 years old in 2002/2003. And I think Laura is probably a fake name for someone in his life, as in "Laura Laurent".
I've thought of it as being about suicide, particularly the last line: "I'm leaving, but I don't know where to..."
Oh, and Conor + Emmylou = the most beautiful sound ever, especially on this track. |

Rilo Kiley – Don't Deconstruct Lyrics

I think this kind of builds off of the whole Science vs. Romance theme. Someone thinks they can just compartmentalize everything going on in their mind and is trying to do the same for her, but she's not that basic - she swears.
I like the part about heaven a lot. "Would you go? You can work from home." It's making a statement about those people who just want happiness for themselves versus those who want to teach others how. It reminds me of the Bodhisattva Vow in Buddhism: to enter into nirvana only after all beings have been enlightened.
But I digress. |

Rilo Kiley – A Better Son/Daughter Lyrics

I think it's likely that this song is about being bipolar. I have a friend who recently saw a doctor because she can't breathe, and she found out that it was a symptom of bipolar disorder. (Hence, "The weight is crushing down on my lungs, I know I can't breathe...") As soon as I started looking at this song this way, it all sort of clicked with things my friend has told me about putting on a happy face at school because that's what people like and then going home to cry and throw up. She's definitely good at getting people to love her, even if she's secretly miserable.
That's not to say that it doesn't apply to life in general...I relate to this song a lot myself, though I'm not bipolar. Making great efforts to force happiness upon yourself... It's not something I'm very good at, but I try. |
