Thrice – Come All You Weary Lyrics 12 years ago
I consider myself an agnostic and I usually don't enjoy religious lyrics very much, but I still love this song, probably because of the way it is written. Though it is mostly composed of biblical references, it can still be interpreted - at least to me - very universally. Everyone needs a place to rest their heads and it doesn't matter whether it means being surrounded by people you love, by your friends, or whether it is something abstract as faith itself - not faith in something in particular, simply faith in something important to you, which makes you feel secure.

To me, this song serves as an inspiration to be a better man - to be someone, who is able to take someone elses burden for a while, so maybe someday, when I'm in trouble, someone will be there to help me with my own burdens.

I personally believe, that if there's a God, it's not some entity hidden somewhere above. It's something that all of us are part of - every single living soul, we share a part of this connection that binds us together. Let's just be here for each other. For if we do this, none of us would ever be alone, no matter what they believe in. That's how I like to think about it and that's message to me.

In the end - this song really helps me to find rest for my soul anytime I listen to it...

Smile Empty Soul – Compromise Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this is about a guy who is totally obsessed with a girl, who doesn't want him. He loves her in a selfish way, not caring about her feelings, he's deeply convinced they're supposed to be together and follows her everywhere, no matter how hard she tries to hide from him. It's kinda' creepy story...

MrPeppers: Yup, you're probably right. When I look at these words after 2 years, you're interpretation makes more sense to me.

Rise Against – The Dirt Whispered Lyrics 14 years ago
This new album got me into Rise Against at first. I didn't like their old "screamy" stuff much, though I loved Swing Life Away, but now I'm in love even with such songs as Halfway There - their just so full of emotion and meaning. But the same applies to the new songs.

I think this one is simply about missing your kid while on tour, or anywhere far away from your family - when you put your ear to the ground and try "listening to the dirt", you are able to hear footsteps that are very far away, she's just listening and waiting for him to come home.

He is expressing his feelings and worries. He doesn't like the fact he can't see his daughter grow up, he can't be there for her all the time and he's afraid he's missing something very important. A beautiful song, to me...

Rise Against – Halfway There Lyrics 14 years ago
To me, this song is about not giving up, even if you feel like you can't go on anymore. I think what Tim's trying to say that in the moment you tell yourself "I can't do this anymore" you know, that you're halfway to what you're trying to achieve. You can't just stop, when you got so far already, you've got to step over your own limits and fight on - the knowledge that you have only one half of the road to go will help you through, 'cause you know it will be all over... well, perhaps not so soon, but at least you know you can make it. I agree it's about pushing yourself, like TANSTAAFL wrote. Right now I've adopted the chorus lyrics as my personal motto :-)

Autopilot Off – Make A Sound Lyrics 16 years ago
I think Autopilot Off often talk about topics like religion or faith, but rather then speaking of them directly, they use hidden clues and you have to search for them inside the lyrics. Maybe the band was inspired by Bad Religion a bit, after all, they've done a pretty good cover of Generator :-)

To me, this song is about life and being surrounded by uncertainty. The motive of ocean is very important here. When you turn the "autopilot off", it's like sailing into great wide open - you don't know what to expect, what to do, where to go. You can be destroyed by waves at any moment, and you'll never have the chance to call for help - because "you won't even make a sound".

"I'm losing track of all the days
Lost inside a lifeboat, drifting out with all the waves, the waves!"

I think this is about living in stereotype. Everyday's the same, repetition's taking over, and you can't escape it, because you have no other choice, as you are alone in the middle of the ocean of your problems.

Here comes the "faith" part;

"And some will find their way by looking towards the sky
And some will leave their fate up to these ocean tides"

"looking towards the sky" - faith. Religious faith, to be accurate. For many people, it's the universal solution, it gives their life a purpose, a meaning. They need to believe there's someone watching over them, that there's a better place to be, or that better days will come. I'm not against it, though I'm not a believer, I'm agnostic, and I think (and also appreciate) that the songwriter doesn't put himself into a position of some kind of judge, he just states the fact.

However, there are also people who don't have the will to fight and they rather choose to remain passive and leave their fates up to the circumstances.

"The water gets so heavy" living under pressure, it's getting worse and you are close to drowning.

In the end, the message of this song could be that whatever happens, you have to fight against the pressure - you should make a sound, you shouldn't give up, there's no solution in waiting for some "divine intervention" (which is another great song, heh) or giving up to determination, because no one really cares, when you drown. Take control. Or try, at least.

Ignite – Poverty For All Lyrics 17 years ago
The lyrics are pretty self-explanatory to me, but they might be hard to understand for someone who has never lived in a country marked by communist regime.

I was born in 1989 in Slovakia, in the year when so called "Velvet Revolution" took part in our country and that was the year when the communist era ended, so it's true that I don't remember anything about those dayse, nevertheless I can still feel some kind of "ghosts" of socialism everywhere - in schools, office buildings, on the streets. There is still something in the minds of people, red flags might have gone, but "the sorrow, humiliation" and all the feelings remained.

To, me, this is the "death of the nation" - that line is so true - and it will take few generations for all the "dead" nations to live again... but we've got to move on... no one can take back what has happened, but we can still learn from it. Actually, the whole world should learn from it. This song reminds me of how even the best ideals can easily turn into a reign of tyranny.

Smile Empty Soul – Proud To Be Lyrics 18 years ago
Are you that dumb, or are you just kidding? Because I'm pretty sure SES didn't try to be patriotic or what, this song is their interpretation of how modern american man sees himself, his country and the rest of the world. It's sarcastic, not patriotic, just like most of the other songs on that CD. However, I hope that some Americans aren't so "proud to be".

And I have an advice for you, who didn't understand the lyrics completely, you might find it useful - when listening to lyrics, try to think about them a bit. Sometimes the meaning is hidden very well.

By the way - thetrukillat said how stupid the lyrics are - I have to agree with that - you see how stupid acting like the "ruler of the world" and all that pride and arrogance is?
