Morrissey – Will Never Marry Lyrics
|
The way he sings the first verse then the song goes into the strings is beautiful. This song uses the same sonic method as Everyday Is Like Sunday but is even more heartbreaking. I find it particularly sad that Morrissey is writing a letter in the scenario of the song, as if there's too much pain for him to express face to face. |

Morrissey – Thats How People Grow Up Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
I was driving my car,
I crashed and broke my spine,
So yes, there are things worse in life than
never being some-one's sweetie.
Morrissey is self mocking his classic Smiths song There Is A Light, mocking the romanticism in getting killed by the double decker bus and the ten tonne truck by now 23 years on making the car crash practical and mundane rather than escapist and beautiful. This song is him really severing some of the imagery and ideas he had perpetrated in his youth. |

Art Brut – Late Sunday Evening Lyrics
|
When I feel my friends have been conspiring against me
I break into their bedrooms and write in their diaries - I think the above may be a reference to Morrissey's song Suedehead, and the words 'and you break into my room, just to read my diary, and the things you knew I'd written about you.' Eddie Argos is rather fond of The Smiths I gather. |

Morrissey – Everyday Is Like Sunday Lyrics

I think Morrissey was inspired by Slough by John Betjeman, and those lines
Come, friendly bombs, and fall on Slough
It isn't fit for humans now |

Morrissey – November Spawned A Monster Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
I can not believe no one has spotted the obvious frankenstein reference here. In Mary Shelley's novel the monster was created on a November, and was unloved by his creator-Frankenstein, which is how the little girl feels here. The creature of Frankenstein is doomed to a lifetime of misery and loneliness due to his outer appearance, and Morrissey is making a statement of the importance of appearance to mankind, drawing parallels between the disabled girl and the monster the whole way through. |

Morrissey – The Last Of The Famous International Playboys Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
'I never wanted to kill I'm not naturally evil' also reminds me of the stance of Frankenstein's monster in the book Frankenstein. Initially an innocent and kind creature, the creature is driven by the rejection of humanity to kill. |

Morrissey – At Last I Am Born Lyrics
|
This album fits in with the mood of the rest of the album, which lacks the soul crushing sadness and sorrow of some Smiths songs. In many interviews, including in response to a question in his official fanzine, Morrissey has said he is at the happiest period of his life and has learned to accept himself. |

The Long Blondes – Appropriation (By Any Other Name) Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
I think this is about a girl who dates a widower. 'I can see you won't forget her/Because she meant untimely death a year ago'. He can't 'forget his first', and talks about 'British rail' and fox-hunting, which is his first love's interests, not his current. And so hence the chorus 'You can't have me, make me act the same' |

The Ordinary Boys – Walking on the Faultlines Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
Subtitled 'The Ultimate Step', this song is about celebrity suicide, or the last step a desperate attention seeker is willing to take to hit the headlines when the media has turned its back on them. |

The Ordinary Boys – I Luv U Lyrics

Pretty straight forward, Preston is talking about his inability to write a proper love song, so he can only say I love you to get his point across. |

The Long Blondes – You Could Have Both Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
And who was it who sang 'I know that you love one
So why can't you love two?' - is an allusion to a line from My Love Life by Morrissey. I asked about this to Dorian, the songwriter himself, and he admitted to it. |

The Long Blondes – Once and Never Again Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
I think 'feel a girl' might mean 'feel like a girl'. The motherly advice seems right to me as 'you're only 19, you don't need a boyfriend' seems to be telling the girl that because she's so young she doesn't need to cling to this boy. |

The Automatic – Raoul Lyrics

I defy you guys. The band say this is a song about lost ambitions, as embodied by Raoul, who lost his dreams and started working in a sandwich shop. It's all in the first and second stanzas. |

The Ordinary Boys – The List Goes On Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
The Ordinary Boys' critique of modern pop music, with such obvious lines like 'Media press has become an utter mess, the opinions of failed pop star', while ironically claiming 'Originality is so passe, forgotten genres got rehatched', despite the band themselves being heavily criticised for exactly reviving ska and copying bands like The Clash and The Jam. |

The Ordinary Boys – Maybe Someday Lyrics
|
I think this is a song about boredom and Maybe Someday refers to maybe someday something interesting will happen, for me 'Who needs love when you got two eyes and you got the time?' may be innuendo for masturbation and this song may be similar to Longview by Greenday |

The Ordinary Boys – Weekend Revolution Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
This is obviously about the hooligan culture among some young British men. Weekday demons = working 9 to 5 in a low paid, meaningless job, getting depressed, and weekend revolution is obviously getting p*ssed on Friday and Saturday and getting into fights. |

The Rakes – All Too Human Lyrics
|
It's a great song and I believe it's about the break up of a relationship, and the reason is because of the band's busy schedule and success, so the line 'and though up beyond the charts we might be climbing, to do it without you is very frightening' |
