Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood Lyrics 13 years ago
That's got to be the greatest explanation for Alec Ounsworth's music I've ever read. Thanks for sharing!

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Details of the War Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm pretty sure the end of the song wraps it all up.

Ounsworth is telling about an opera star dying for love. She hangs out with her leather-panted friends, spending their money looking for happiness.

Then he goes back to when she was in high school and hanging out with all the wrong people: the football star.

He then says that the opera star will eventually pay for her good looks with someone who isn't as smart/successful/important as he believes himself to be.

When he says, "Be careful with the details of the war," he's advising the person writing the story about the opera star to truly find out what went wrong in this girl's life to get her in the position she is in now.

Yes, I have. And this song is still bad. That's my opinion. Incubus have gotten away from what made them special.

My Morning Jacket – Thank You Too! Lyrics 15 years ago
Just an additional note about the song's religious undertones, I like how he says, "Really didn't think I's gonna make it this way." He never thought he was going to be one to make it through life as a Christian. The "Although our worlds seem far apart," line is about his life as a "rock star" being so different from what is thought of as the Christian lifestyle.

Does anyone know what he's screaming at the end of it? I hear "The radio is playing! The radio is playing!"

My Morning Jacket – Smokin' from Shootin' Lyrics 15 years ago
After listening to this song over and over again, I have a new opinion on its meaning.

I think it's a song written from God's perspective to someone on Earth.

He's asking her if she's ready to come to Him. He says that she never wanted to be treated like a woman, maintaining that she was just a kid because in some religions, there is an age of accountability. He's saying that this girl justified all of her actions by saying that she wasn't old enough to understand. For some reason or another, she never wanted to be committed to the present, she was living her life on the run.

The second verse is about God giving her reason to commit to Him. He is right here for her, committed to the present, although no one that exists (no person on Earth) is. The question, "What is life in God? A perfect vision of the self?" confuses me, but I'm open to suggestions...
The chorus is about God simply saying that he exists. A smoking gun is an undeniable fact; therefore, God's asking if we see that He is undeniably real.

Maybe the girl finally commits, and that is the third verse. She says "Kumbaya my lord, c'mon row your boat ashore," telling Him to take over.

The end is God's final call to everyone. What are you waiting for? You're not getting any younger. You're only getting closer to death.

Aside from my interpretation, the song is amazing. I LOVE the way he makes his voice shake when he says "it is cold..." Anyone else hear that? He almost adds an "H" to it... "hit is chold..." Jim and the rest of the James gang are great.

My Morning Jacket – Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Part 2 Lyrics 15 years ago
I think the song is about falling in love.

The first verse is about being comfortable being single. He says that "If you touch me, I just think I'll scream, because it's been so long since someone challanged me and made me think about the way things are, made me think about the way they could be." (Lyrics from the album sleeve)
He's saying basically that he wouldn't know how to handle it.

Someone once said to me that the first reason for attraction to anyone is seeing yourself in them. For some reason, I think Jim James agrees with this, as he says it in Parts I & II. He asks himself "Feeling... why?" He's asking himself why we feel, then he says "I can see it... all by the way you smile. I'm smiling too! I see myself in you. I am with it! Oh man, I am wired! Oh my lord - yeah, now I really know why."
He's saying that in looking into this person's smile, he sees the reason for human emotion. That is fucking beautiful. Personally, I've never had that feeling, but I can almost understand it because of James's incredible lyrics.

The end of the song in noteworthy as well. He lets you get comfortable with that bass/keys groove. You get comfortable with it (like being single) and then you hear the screams (someone touched you), because remember, if someone touched you, you'd probably just scream.

My Morning Jacket – The Way That He Sings Lyrics 15 years ago
I find a lot of similarities between this and "I'm Amazed." Jim's explanation for that was that "it's just about things that amaze me - good or bad." Each part of the song talks about other perpexing things.

"Faith can't prove what science won't resolve."

That is one of the best lines I've heard in a long time.

The second verse sounds like a person talking to someone else about God. That line, to me, means that faith can't prove that there is a God, or that would eliminate faith; it would just be truth. The second half means, to me, that science won't resolve "how we are" because there is no other explanation. The end sounds like he's talking about society, are we getting closer to armageddon, or are we getting further from God.

My Morning Jacket – I Think I'm Going to Hell Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this is about how corrupt the world is. The first part and churches and buildings burning is about them realzing they are evil and thinking that as they die, they are going to go to Hell.

The second part is about him thinking about something awful and thinking that he's going to go to Hell for thinking something like this. And he's saying that as he feels these demons (evil thoughts) coming, he'd rather be taken to Hell than to wrong those close to him.

Perhaps way off, but that's what I think.

Foo Fighters – The Pretender Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is not about politics. It's a message to the media saying you're going to have to face me, I am here to stay.

The beginning is about them keeping him in Kurt's shadow, "keep you in the dark and so it all began." Then it talks about them bringing up his past, "send in your skeletons."

The next part of the first verse is about him letting go, he's not going to continue to act like he doesn't know he's in Kurt's shadow. "Done pleading ignorance, that whole defense." Then it tells them to keep writing it, the "same old story."

The chorus and next verse is about him outlasting the writers and telling them he's not going anywhere. "I will never surrender..." And even though they say he will never be anything "Another soul for sale... We are not permanent," he says it's all BS "same old story."

Then the breakdown is about him getting in their face and saying here's what I am, I'm here to stay, so who are you.

I love the second use of the intro because then it explodes into him yelling at them saying he'll never give up. And by the end he's saying this is who I am and SCREAMING "who are you?"

Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun Lyrics 16 years ago
I love how every grunge song has to be about drugs...

I think the song is about understanding that nothing in this world is pure and perfect. Even the Sun has black holes in it. Yet, these imperfect things are used to wash away things that are worse.

Foo Fighters – How I Miss You Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is so amazing. I once asked my ex to download it and it stopped before it broke out. I was like, "Wow, how uneventful."

I recently found it on YouTube and I was dead wrong. Such an amazing song. Just as everyone else who has posted already, I'm missing someone just like this.

I love the line "Never should've called."--When I call the person I'm missing, it only makes it worse. It's such a Catch 22 because I want to talk to her, but that only makes me miss her more. BAD ASS SONG!!!

That line is so deep but obvious. Did I mean enough to you that, when your life is over, you will remember me?

Foo Fighters – Erase/Replace Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the song is about a relationship. Most of Dave's songs can be related to a relationship. Anyway, I think it's about people avoiding things that are tearing them apart, thinking that if they "Oh, no, don't talk about it; it goes away."

Then they find that they have to erase and replace their promises to each other so that the relationship can work out.

Wow, thanks for that pointless-way to give meaning to your name...

Anyway, the meaning of the song is obvious, two people growing old to end up forgotten, but to themselves they will always be monuments.

This is probably the best song on the new album; very new, different, beautiful... I love that line: "Our bones forever enstoned, a monumental life." Dave is a genius.

Foo Fighters – Normal Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's about wanting to fit in; to be Normal. But at the same time, not wanting to give up everything you stand for and believe in. It's a great song; a little on the poppy side, so that may be why it wasn't released.

Check out the video on YouTube. It has some great videos spanning the band's entire career. It really makes the song a lot better.

Incubus – Diamonds and Coal Lyrics 17 years ago
WORST Incubus song ever. Reminds me of a Police song, which I like, but hearing Mike play like this is embarassing. I laugh everytime Brandon says "I'm not calling you an animal, I think we just fight too much." That is soooo cheesy and not Brandon at all. Where did the good ole days go?

Incubus – Love Hurts Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is so terrible. Maybe the worst Incubus song out there, but Diamonds and Coal takes that honor.

Brandon knows this is a shitty love song and knows it's corny and that his hardcore S.C.I.E.N.C.E. and Fungus Amongus fans would absolutely abhor it, so he tries very very very hard (just as he does in Diamonds and Coal) to use metaphors and be a great lyricist to try and save this song from the bowels. Nice try, you're creative, but Bob Dylan could not make this song decent.

My Morning Jacket – One Big Holiday Lyrics 17 years ago
Archetype, I think you're overthinking. Superficies, I think you're joking.

It's obviously about their record deal and some guy saying you've got a chance to never have to work (because playing music is not a job) and that's where "one big holiday" comes from. When he says "Was some shakin'," I think he's just saying shaking as in hands; meeting the guys at the record company.

My Morning Jacket – At Dawn Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this one is easy. The world is telling him that his life as a musician is a dumb idea, that he'll never make it and he should forget about it. But that's what keeps him going. When they put him down and what not, that's when he goes and makes music.

What's interesting, though is he basically calls them hobos when he says they burn your trash cans. It's cool beacuse it's like they are the low-lifes who have to burn papers and empty trash cans to stay warm, but they're telling him that he'll never make it.

Foo Fighters – Exhausted Lyrics 17 years ago
I had no idea what the song meant, but after looking up "accosted" and one of its meanings being "to solicit for sex," it makes more sense.

The first verse talks about why he feels the need and then if it could be undone will it still cost money? Like... will asking for sex and the act not even happening still cost me because the act is still almost committed, which is bad enough.

Then the second verse talks about him getting away from the girl he cheated with, never seeing each other again.

The third is about how he feels... after the sex (bliss) is over, he's left with that terrible feeling of guilt. He wants something to get him away from this scene, but the idea of him being arrested tells him that he's going to have to live with it forever.

Foo Fighters – Next Year Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is about Dave leaving LA for Virginia as much of the TINLTL album is.

He's kind of comparing his return to Virginia as a space-shuttle taking off (hence the video). "Everything's alright up here."

He knows he's coming back to LA, but he's just commenting of the fast-paced life of LA, watching the whole world riot while I'm hiding out in my little town in Virginia.

This is almost cemented at the end when he says "Say Goodbye."

Foo Fighters – Marigold Lyrics 17 years ago
First off I think the last line is "He's scared 'cause I won't."

With that said I think this song is about a girl watching a boy fall in love with her.

He's watching her and making sure she doesn't leave him like she said she might.

At the same time he's scared that she may want it all (his love) and that is like taboo to him, you just don't talk about it. The flip side of that is that if she doesn't want everything, then "what do I do now."

And as they sit there studying each other, seeing if she'll fall for him and he seeing if she'll run away, the clock ticks away. Nothing is happening to better or worsen the relationship "the clock is slow."

The six colored pictures of a marigold just reiterates that point because nothing changes between the six different pictures of a flower.

Foo Fighters – Good Grief Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think it's about suicide.

I think it's about the fear of suicide. When he says "... the thought of being ousted comes and goes. When I think about it, the wind blows. I hate it," he's saying that when he thinks about it, something seems to shift in the room so-to-speak, and he hates that the feeling even came into his mind.

The second verse is, to me, about wanting to get away from whatever is making him think about it. Because even though he flashes that smile, it's delicate and easy to break. And he doesn't like this running. The "chills and petty band-aids wrapped around," line is talking about his cover-up and these stupid things he does to get away from the problem, just covering the feelings up, instead of addressing them and eliminating them. He hates that he just covers up his emotions.

Foo Fighters – A320 Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, the song is about love.
He loves being in love. I believe he's comparing love to flying. Women (the thing that takes you into love) are the airplanes. He's afraid of women because he's been hurt, but he loves the way it feels to be in love.
Then he tries to tell himself that this one is going to work.

He's so excited that it happens that he doesn't realize that it could end (... don't believe it, gravity can pull me from this height."), but at the same time knows it has to because past relationships have led him to believe that (One day we'll come crashing down.)

And when he's looking at the ground and how boring life was before love, almost taking it for granite... it disentigrates (Ah look out, we're going down.)

I think it could be about a girl who has sex a lot to fill some kind of void. You hear about that a lot now-a-days. "She hides behind the bedroom wall." Also the line about wedding present not being so perfect... her virginity is gone and it's not going to be as sweet when she gives herself to her husband on their honeymoon.

Incubus – Nice To Know You Lyrics 17 years ago
The song could have been written about his hand but like many Incubus sons, it may start out as something but he writes so it can be different things. The first verse is about a break-up. He's saying that she's a great person and everything but prospective of him not always being there (because he's in a band) sets him free because she realized that it's just a fling.

The second verse is about her again but when he says "To obtain a bird's eye is to turn a blizzard to a breeze..." I think it's talking from her point-of-view. When they were going through it it seemed so hard, but looking back with high-insight (a bird's eye) makes it seem like nothing--a breeze.

Incubus – A Crow Left of the Murder Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is political. "Ditch what I've read behind what I've heard. Look. Find. Free." I think it's about not believing what the media tells you and just looking between the lines and finding the truth. Hence the "Out of line, indivisible!" Because it says "Under God, Indivisible." Saying the whole "Under God" part of the national anthem is out of line. I totally disagree with the meaning I get from it, but that's just what I think it's about. I personally believe in God and love my country.

Foo Fighters – M.I.A. Lyrics 18 years ago
Though I agree with the "leaving LA" idea, I think it could be about an ending relationship.
"Calling unanswered at home in my lost and found,"
I'm at home calling you and you're not there.
"You won't find me I'm going MIA, tonight I'm leaving going MIA"
I'm ending our relationship tonight.
"Getting lost in you again it's better than being numb,"
You don't know if you want to end it b/c after a relationship you feel numb (I do at least) and getting lost in someone's games is sometimes better than not caring for anyone at all.
"Counting every minute 'til the feeling comes crashing down. Run when it hits the ground."
You're just waiting until you can tell her that it's over, but once you say it (it hits the ground), you're gone, nowhere to be seen.
"I'm good at escaping, but better at flaking out."
I'm good at just getting out of a relationship, but it's easier to just let the person know it's over. But the flaking out part is b/c we usually don't tell people everything, we just act like it's one thing that killed us when it was really all this other stuff that built up.

I think it's about losing a girl.
"One more day that I've survived another night alone. Pay no mind I'm doin' fine, breathing on my own."
You tell the girl not to worry that you'll make it and you don't want her to feel sorry in any way.
"Wake me when the hour arrives..."
When you come around and realize I'm meant for you, let me know.

For me it's just about trying to make it on your own but all the while knowing that when that person comes around you'll fall for her again... "See you somewhere down the line we're teathered once again."

Foo Fighters – February Stars Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's about letting someone know that you're always gonna be there. Maybe she is playing two people and you're just letting her know that once the other guy is gone, then you'll be there right where you belong, but you're weak because you can't change her mind and that's why you're "just hanging on"
Then in the "You ask for walls, I'll build them higher," he's saying that when he gets the oppurtunity to do something for her, he'll do it better than she wants it. "I'd stand but they're much too tall, and I fall." I'd stand up for myself but you know that I'm weak b/c of everything I do for you. Therefore, I have no more power because you know I'd do all that and more... so I fall.

I think this song is about telling someone too much and getting too attached and ending up hurt. "Wish that I had another stab at the undercover," he means that he wishes he would've never told someone what he did. "Now that I've found my reward," what's come of all this... "I'd throw it away long before I'd share a piece of mind with you," I'd give it away before I tell you anything again.

I think it's about Dave's career. He loves that he's always on the run and never gets too close to anyone "comfort of the chase," and "this my savin' grace." It keeps him from getting too close and getting hurt. "Tradin' faces, strangers in the end..." I think this is about how people tell each other what they want the other to think and we can never REALLY know someone because we can never REALLY know if they're telling us the truth.
