The Naked And Famous – Spank Lyrics | 8 years ago |
Maybe I'm going too dark or too literal (from the pedophilia line), but I'm interpreting it as a family ripped apart by incest and molestation. The family and society denies/ignores it, the brother/abuser is guilty and hates himself but does it anyway, and the narrator is left hopeless and just trying to survive until the next time... Sort of a joykill, haha. But could be wrong. I was listening to it with Amazon's lyrics scrolling and the second half just struck me in the gut, even though I've listened to this song for years without catching the lyrics. Reminds me of "May Flowers" by Cursive. |
The Mountain Goats – Alibi Lyrics | 13 years ago |
The way things started out, I pretty much expected a song about murder....Seems like an intentional parallel. Or I'm just creepier than I thought. |
Murder by Death – As Long as There Is Whiskey in the World Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This song came out two years too late... Would've been perfect to listen to back in college partying with all my friends. Still is perfect to listen to, don't get me wrong though. |
Devo – Supercop Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Or, it's about Supercop, the Jackie Chan movie...yeah. |
Shearwater – Century Eyes Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Maybe I'm the only one interpreting things this way, but the album really holds a sort of environmentalist, modern-day apocalypse feel that I really like. A lot of songs seem to deal with human destruction of each other and the environment, and how it will end us. ...Maybe. To me, Century Eyes sounds like a song mocking how we fall in love with our extravagant technologies...I especially get feelings of the Titanic and luxury liners from the second paragraph, and of our obsession with television in the third. Anyway, this song is practically punk rock in that it makes me want to hop around and break things...which just might be its aim. |
Shearwater – Home Life Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"you looked at her" - her = mother nature I'm guessing. We're destroying mother nature and her beauty, even though we're dependent on her and will be lost without her. Gorgeous song. The sequence about 3:50 in gives me chills. |
Bear vs. Shark – Antwan Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Kinda surprised this one has no comments, it's my favorite on the album. Seems to be about a) the useless nature of words, how information can be twisted to serve people's motives("disconnect the meaning formulate an opinion without a second thought"), and b) the hurtful nature of it ("lips of a cobra"). Or not, BvS has such awesomely ridiculous lyrics, it's hard to pinpoint. I really love the last lines, too. RIPBVS |
Shearwater – My Only Boy Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Lyrics are courtesy of Jonathan himself. My first impression is the song's simply about opening up...whether opening up to life or love, the boy in question is usually dull and jaded, and is finally letting people into his heart/is finally living/loving...Or not. Either way, the song's marching melody haunts me whenever I listen. I love it. |
Engine Down – And Done Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Someone trying to save face, pathetically, after they f$@#ed up a relationship. I'm extremely pissed I didn't hear of this band until, literally, the day after they finished their farewell tour. Sigh... |
Shearwater – Palo Santo Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Maybe about longing to return to your favorite place, or being reminded about better times elsewhere. Very peaceful and surreal. |
Shearwater – Johnny Viola Lyrics | 16 years ago |
To me...it's about a person who's letting love slip by willingly. They don't live, they just go through life passively, ignoring love, pushing it away, or just hiding their feelings. Lifeless, heartless... I know/knew a person like that... Palo Santo is an amazing record, but this is probably one of the standout tracks. Beautiful music... |
Crooked Fingers – Doctors Of Deliverance Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I feel like the song's about letting yourself fall into a downward spiral to delinquency, or letting yourself get depressed, that sort of deal...the good life didn't really work out, so eff it all...that sort of deal. Either way, I'm quite happy I found CF. Their lyrics are hard to decipher, but I love 'em. And like someone else said, their song structure is simple, but refreshing. |
Archers of Loaf – Wrong Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I'm thinking the "superior" line is a sarcastic one... |
These Arms Are Snakes – Blue Rose Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is probably my favorite TAAS song...some of the lyrics are off, but overall it seems fine. To me, it feels like a relationship with someone (romantic or otherwise) has turned sour, and the speaker's swearing off the person, and glad to do it. |
The Snake the Cross the Crown – Behold the River Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Actually, nice job. The only difference I see in the liner notes is he says "don't speak" both times, apparently, though I see where you got 'sing'... SCC's lyrics are always a bit hard to decipher for me...until I do, I'll just enjoy this as the great song it is. |
The Mountain Goats – Maybe Sprout Wings Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think by 'bad dreams', he actually means good ones...dreams of things he wants, but can't have, so they shake him from sleep, and he desires to escape to them...maybe. As for saying his friends' names three times, I think since he's looking in the mirror or reflective window at least, he's trying to summon them back to him...bring them into his presence, a la the bloody mary urban legend...maybe. either way, awesome album...it's not as diverse as past albums, but it has this really dark/melancholy atmosphere surrounding it that i like a lot... |
Sorry About Dresden – Butterflies Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I like Fiveline's interpretation...except: "'It’s not as easy as it seems, to do what you think is right.'" ...I kind of interpret that as, specifically regarding the situation he's talking about, the right thing to do might be to try to move on and forget about their encounter(s) since the other person is showing little interest...but that's easier said than done. Anyway, I really relate to this song, and basically adore this band...Especially good news is that they're still alive and kicking, even writing some new stuff. |
Lagwagon – Love Story Lyrics | 17 years ago |
fatkid FTW. Methinks by hurtful situations, it can be specifically applied to relationships. Great, relate-able song. |
Thee More Shallows – Ave Grave Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The fact that he sings such creepy lyrics about execution with such a light voice is both extremely creepy and amazing. I can' t get enough of this band. |
Thee More Shallows – Cloisterphobia Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Very, very, very creepy...equally as awesome. It seems like what the above guy said, dancing in someone's shoes - IMO, to spite them and celebrate their demise... "nobody's gonna stop you now" Man, i'm getting goosebumps listening... |
Thee More Shallows – Ask Me About Jon Stross Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"How did you see your way free to do what you did? I guess I still thought of you as that happy kid" Seems like a suicide... |
Pedro the Lion – Promise Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Spock - Just because you're an atheist doesn't mean you should dismiss his lyrics. I'm not religious at all, and the lyrics are still inspiring, religiously-themed or not. Have an open mind, bud. The song's about doubting faith, definitely. Quality song... |
Thee More Shallows – House Breaks Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I actually dunno whether I'd call it "heartwarming"....it seems like the subject matter is about being restrained from pursuing one's dreams, or that one's dreams are sometimes simply not possible. Maybe I'd call it....'thoughtful', instead of 'heartwarming'. Heh. |
Now It's Overhead – Let Up Lyrics | 17 years ago |
...Here's the corrected lyrics.... I'm sick of living in this movie Everybody looking through me No one here to hold I just wake up and leave. A chill is in my bones more than this sunless early winter morning Waiting for a ride Out in the freezing rain And it goes by Without stopping Her stuff is on the counter what if I had never met her? All I know is just a feeling from inside my veins I am broken-hearted It is awful worse than i had ever guessed I wouldn't wish it on an enemy And I can't hear What my friends say It won't let up Just enough To come down Just one day. I have given up All but one Thing I Can do or say Blood is rushing, pumping through My heart to push the oxygen and Opiates through arteries up to my brain The beat is systematic not the reason for my habit I just need a bigger picture to fill in the space My head is getting lighter I can almost hear my sister calling Begging for my reason to go on this way I'm sick of living in this movie Everybody looking through me No one here to hold me As I fade away But I won't die In no pain I won't die, won't die Won't die, won't die I won't die, won't die Won't die, won't die Song to me seems to be about drug addiction and heartbreak...I love it. |
Okkervil River – The President's Dead Lyrics | 17 years ago |
For some reason, the Jagjaguwar site specifically calls the narrator a young republican, but i can't identify any reason why...the song seems a-political. Anyway, i agree....it's about the unforgettable moments in life. My day just brightened with this new Okk River song... |
The Constantines – Young Lions Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I'm thinking it's "every lion has its victim"... In any case, I agree with what wish said...it's about just living up your youth. Kickass. |
The Mountain Goats – Pale Green Things Lyrics | 17 years ago |
When he finds out about the stepfather's death, perhaps John starts thinking about the more pleasant memories he had of him, or perhaps how he can relate to him... Anybody got an inkling as to what the 'pale green things' refer to? |
Snowden – Between the Rent and Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Maybe i'm reading into this too much from my own experience with someone, but... Seems as if they've fallen for someone who ends up being manipulative/taking advantage of them in some way/just plain not appreciating them...and they realize this. Whether or not they end up acting on the realization and break it off is up for debate, methinks... |
The Mountain Goats – Love Love Love Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Hab - Love isn't some hunky dorey, warm, fuzzy force...it's so powerful that it can destroy and cause harm in its expression, so to speak. As displayed by his stepfather doing horrible things, but not being an unloving father. Short n sweet, his last line in the quote sums it up - love is wild. Amazing song. |
Songs: Ohia – Captain Badass Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Best love song ever. |
Songs: Ohia – Goodnight Lover Lyrics | 18 years ago |
To me it seems it's either about saying farewell to the one you love (kinda the 'duh' explanation), or about falling out of love with someone. My favorite song - even above Cap'n Badass. |
Tool – Aenema Lyrics | 18 years ago |
\"i don\'t know about Scientology except that it looks like it has science in the name and theirfore I might know something of it from science\" Eh, Gijera, dude...no offense, because it looks like you put a lot of thought into your post, but...it really doesn\'t say much for your explanation of the song when you explain something you admittedly don\'t know with a random assumption (and an extremely wrong one at that). In any case, as for the rest of your post....let\'s just say I like a lot of the other explanations posted here better. In any case, I used to think Tool was just for stoners who enjoyed wearing black all the time. Then I decided to give \'em a serious listen and open my mind, and was blown away. Tool is amazing. This song\'s undoubtedly my favorite of \'em all. |
Bear vs. Shark – 5, 6 Kids Lyrics | 18 years ago |
You\'re right, iwanta...it is \"Courage is faith without asking...\" Badass song. |
Damone – Carwash Romance Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This band is such a guilty pleasure of mine. The lyrics aren't exactly deep, but they're just fun to sing along to/listen to. Perfect party band, I would say. I provide great amusement to friends when I sing their lyrics in the car, "Whoa"'s and all. |
Pixies – Where Is My Mind? Lyrics | 18 years ago |
For all you bashing those who are mentioning Fight Club - shut the fuck up. Be happy, grateful in fact, that their music is more popular now due to the movie. I'd be stoked if one of my favorite bands was featured prominently in a movie like this song was...and furthermore, a little more welcoming to those who are starting to listen to the band. Granted, people are commenting a lot on this one song - but one leads to others, and I'm sure albums will be bought. Quit being elitist pricks and just be happy the Pixies are a little more popular. ...That said, the song just emanates confusion and insanity, whether by way of drugs, or just the way the speaker's living life in general. "With your feet on the air, and your head on the ground."...awesome. And yes, the ending to Fight Club is probably my favorite ending of any movie. |
Circa Survive – Act Appalled Lyrics | 18 years ago |
What makes you think he's gay? Furthermore, why would you care? Anyway, this song's their best, easily. Love it... |
Sufjan Stevens – The Black Hawk War, or, How to Demolish an Entire Civilization and Still Feel Good About Yourself in the Morning, or, We Apologize for the Inconvenience but You're Going to Have to Leave Now, or, 'I Have Fought the Big Knives and Will Continue to Fight Th Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Just glancing at the title, and the theme of the album being about Illinois (midwest), I would wager my mother that it refers to the atrocities/conflicts against Native Americans in our history. |
Criteria – Salt in Game Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Just bought this CD (When We Break) on a whim because I knew the singer used to be with Cursive....and I was quite pleasantly surprised. Lovin' the music, lovin' the lyrics....awesome. This is probably my favorite thus far. |

The Good Life – I Am an Island Lyrics | 18 years ago |
...it's probably not a good thing I relate to this song quite well. |
Murder by Death – Killbot 2000 Lyrics | 18 years ago |
First time I saw Murder By Death, I only passively heard of them. Then I saw 'em with with Braid and they opened with this song and this line, "This is a song about zombies" Loved 'em ever since. |
